Anyone do this, i.e. whacking an old tyre with a sledgehammer? Looks great craic and also looks like a good workout. If so, where did you source your tyre and hammer?

Your local tyre place will generally give you a tyre. It costs them to dispose of them like.

You'll need a sledgehammer that's a lot heavier than what's available in most DIY shops.

I had a look there and BuyKettlebellDublin have the 30kg one on special offer at the moment. That'd be pretty heavy to throw about :D

Yeah I had been looking at that place for the sledgehammer alright. Most of the places I read about this were recommending ones that weighed a little less than the lightest one sold by that place which seemed strange.

the funny thing in the video underneath from ross training there using ordinary sledgehammers from a diy store...the rubber ish handle ones not timber..but that was 2005 so they have most likely tagged some elite name on it now like crosshammer2012fitnesssuperelietehammer.com and decided to treble the price.

There's a video on YouTube of Derek poundstone doing this too, looks like a right bit of craic alright.

Just go to a builder's providers and buy a normal sledge, they are heavy enough and come in handy for breaking stuff.

you can use a normal car tyre but your strikes have to be more accurate, any tyre re-pair place will have'em

weight wise for hitting a tyre start with a 10-12lb,cost about 30e

i acutely prefer using a sledge with out making contact check this video out of what you can do with out a tyre

i find it a lot harder because you have to control the sledge a lot more not just pounding it into a tyre,

a 7-10lb sledge with 15 reps each side will fry you using some of those moves, especially "chopping wood","driving fence post","the fireman" and "chop the tree"

Damnit, I want to suggest building a fence as a workout.

    You really don't.

Anybody who has ever gone at it with a simple 12lb'er will know this.
There is a video online of Poundstone wearing himself with a 16lb hammer.

Sorry to resurrect this but I just want to know if anyone knows where to get a sledgehammer in Dublin, either southside or city centre? I've seen buykettledublin but their lightest is heavier than what most places online are recommending as a starting weight!

    Any DIY or hardware store?

There's a B&Q in liffey valley but I'm not familiar with builder's provider's on the southside. You might get one in small DIY stores too but will probably pay more.

I was using a sledge a few weeks ago and thought of this thread. No way a normal builder's sledge is too light.

The sledgehammer torture looks exactly that!

Irish Building Supplies in Dun Laoghaire is the cheapest place I've seen in Dublin to buy a sledgehammer, by a fair bit.

There's at least one building supplies store on Capel street that sells sledgehammers of various weights.

There's two tool shops, McQuillans and I think the other place is called Toolz right across the street. Completely forgot about them.
