What sort of team are we looking at for Ireland size wise? It seems likely that Mad Len and Derval will be going, but who else? I get the impression we are going to have a fairly tiny team going to Istanbul.

As it stands there are very few who can get the standards:

Gregan showed signs of optimism in his US tour. Ran well in heats of the College invitational but DNS in the final (non injury related). Showed a bit of tactical inexperience in the DMR last night trying to pass on the inside but changed gears when needed for the most impressive leg of the relay team gaining a comfortable lead. If he gets a good fast race in Europe I think he can get the standard.

Britton has the capabilities to do it but after a heavy XC season and being an Olympic year I can see here opting out of any indoor races

Coghlan is on the cusp after his 3.59.xx mile in the Terrier meet but I can't see him getting the race to push him the extra 5% needed between now and the closing date for qualifications

Can't see McCarthy going as his focus will be on his final year at NCAAs not a chance Treacy will let him fly for this

I think personally we will have 3 tops at these Championships

A few of our athletes have the times from last season but I can't see many of them going to Istanbul apart from possibly Gregan as they haven't shown on the 2012 indoor season (due to a focus elsewhere or due to recovering from injury in McSweeney's case). Nevertheless, here are those with the standards:

    Brian Gregan (400m)
    Darren McBrearty (800m)
    Ciaran O'Lionaird (1,500m)
    Alistair Cragg (3,000m)
    Dave McCarthy (1500m/3,000m)
    Ailish McSweeney (60m)
    Mary Cullen (3,000m)
    Fionnuala Britton (3,000m)
    Derval O’Rourke (60m Hurdles)

I think it would be beneficial to send a women's 4x400m relay team as there are no qualifying standards. It would give a couple of the girls a good platform to build for the summer season. Wouldn't have to drag Joanne Cuddihy over for it though unless she specifically wanted to use the championships as part of her preaprations for later in the year.
Also, Amy Foster ran 7.39secs in the 60m heats at the nationals yesterday so the standard of 7.35secs is within her reach. Mark English is another possiblilty also.

Cheers I forgot about indoor performances last year was just going off indoor this year and outdoors last year

Ben Reynolds should be on the plane as well given he ran within 1/100th of the standard yesterday.

Mad Len for definite. Derval probably will go, but may give it a skip if her times don't start popping down, like she did a couple of seasons back, but she'll more than likely be there.

I would be 100% behind Amy Foster being sent even if 7.37 stays her SB 'til the deadline. We've also got to think about the Euro Champs in Helsinki and these would be excellent prep for her.

Gregan is running in Belgium soon so may suprise and launch into the 46s.

I'm pretty sure the reason she missed 2008 and 2010 was due to injuries. I am certain that was the case in 2010 and pretty sure it was the same reason in 2008.

Don't think this will be a suprise. Think he would have ran this had he ran the final in the College invitationals as he won his heat comfortably in 47.29 a good .2 ahead of the next best and was running within himself

The only way she can go is if she gets the A standard of 7.35secs. You can't send athletes without the standard unless you have no other athletes qualified for the championships and this isn't the case for Ireland.
She should lower her time again though so I would be pretty confident that she will make Istanbul.
I agree about Ben Reynolds also, a new Irish U23 record and will surely go faster in the next couple of weeks.

I'm not sure if you are correct there. I was of the same opinion last year prior to the European Indoors but two irish athletes went without standards? How can that be explained?

Did anyone else have the standard in these events? If nobody has a standard in a particular event then you can send someone without a standard.

For some reason I assumed this was on the BBC. I just found out on Sunday that it's on Channel 4

They said on Sunday that there was going to be 20 hours of athletics that weekend. Pity we will be treated to about 20 hours of ad breaks instead!

I can't be 100% sure but I think those two were added to the Irish team on the back of encouraging performances in the lead-up to the indoor champs. I think you are going of the standards drawn up by the AAI themselves so they could in fact give some leeway on their cases if they wished.

However, for the world indoors, our athletes MUST reach the standards specified by the IAAF (the only way an athlete can be sent without the standard is if that country has no other male and/or female qualified for the championships.

No! I think there is a different explanation for the selections. ;)

The reason for there selection is that Ireland had a quota entitling the AAI to award 7 free places to their athletes at the Euro Indoor Championships, a system adopted by the EAA to ensure that the championships have an adequate quota of athletes competing at the event.
However,as the World Indoors are organised by the IAAF this has no relevance whatsoever. Irish athletes MUST achieve the qualifying standards specified by the IAAF.

Not sure that Otis will get another chance, more's the pity!
His replacement, Rick Edwards, hosted the UK Indoor broadcast over the weekend.

Incidentally, Channel 4 still have the rights for next World Outdoors in Moscow 2013, but BBC won back rights for 2015 and 2017.

Rick Edwards lives on my street!! He did fine in fairness despite his obvious lack of knowledge.

Thank fck Moscow is their last World Champs, the ad's were head wrecking.

Time to bump this thread with the Championships starting tomorrow.

So how does everyone see the Irish getting on?

Derval? What are her prospects? She hasn't raced in almost a month and of the few early season races she did have before her minor injury, the best she managed was 8.16. Hardly impressive form, but we know not to write her off. But an injury scuppered her plans this time last year and she never really recovered from it, finishing 4th in the Euro Indoors, in 7.96, well below what she could have run with a proper lead in to the championships. Is it too much to expect her to medal? Then again, the standard isn't great. Only 11 of the field have ever gone under 8 seconds, and Derval is one of the fastest on PBs. Of course the gold should be a dead cert for Sally.

What about Mad Len? Great early season form in the USA. Genuine shot at a medal?

And Ben Reynolds. First major championship for Ireland. What would represent a good championships for him? A PB? Qualification for the semis?

A lot to look forward to this weekend.

O'Lionaird has a pretty decent shot at a medal, or a top 5 at least. Field isn't too strong and he's looking strong so far this year.

Hard to see derval doing that well but she can't be written off either!

I think Derval could pull something out of the bag here. She isn't mentioned anywhere as a medal favourite/finalist and I think she responds best to a lead in like that. While the foot problem was a set back, it wasn't too serious and according to her coach she is stronger than ever this season. She will have to break her seasons best from the start, and if she can find a sub 8sec run in the semis, I'd put her down for a real shot in the final. However a 8.1? performance will not make the cut anywhere in these champs, so fingers crossed she is ready. Competition is solid, but very few girls with real championship pedigree like our Derval:D

Sally Pearson seems to be an obvious favourite. But just one caution, she hasn't raced indoors for a while, and her training seems fully geared towards the outdoors going on results so far this season. While she may break the world record, there might be a small chance she mightn't feature as highly as we all expect.

I think O'Lionaird could sneak something too. It's going to come down to tactics and taking chances etc, and I think he's got loads of guts to go for it!

Ben Reynolds has been in great shape all season, and I'd imagine if he broke his PB again, a semi final place would be within his grasp, but I think once he puts in a good performance, it'll be a positive outing for him.

    Athlete Country SB 2012 PB
    1 615 Cindy Roleder GER 7.96 7.96
    2 649 Natasha Ruddock JAM 8.06 8.06
    3 671 Rosa Rakotozafy MAD 8.14
    4 507 Sally Pearson AUS 7.96
    5 513 Eline Berings BEL 8.07 7.92
    6 764 Aleesha Barber TRI 8.17 8.13
    7 549 Nikkita Holder CAN 8.00 8.00
    8 630 Derval O'Rourke IRL 8.16 7.84

A very strong heat for Derval tomorrow, compared to some of the other ones. German girl, Pearson and Holder all having very strong seasons so far, and Eline Berings has class also. Top three progress and 4 fastest losers among the 4 heats.

The depth is not great but it is very strong at the top with Kiplagat, Centrowitz, Iguider, Laalou, Birgen and Gebremedhin.Hopefully O'Lionaird can get himself in the final and in contention with 200 to go.

I think a plce in the final would be good for Derval O'Rourke and any PB for Reynolds is good.

Jessica Ennis 7.90 in the 60m Hurdles. Thats a fantastic performance in a multi event. That would have her very competitive in the hurdles event there!! And she has four more events today!!Hopefully she puts 1.90 on the board in the high jump and ssets her up to defend her title.

If anyone was in doubt about which continent is most dominant in the women's Hep, they won't have it anymore - Jessica Ennis versus Central/Eastern Europe.

Dissapointing from O'Lionard, 11th out of 12, came home in 3.50.12. A break was made around 1k when he was at the back of the field and got detached, he wasn't able to bridge the gap. Race was slow and scrappy. Rupp was 5th in 3:43, qualification is first 3 and 3 fastest losers. Semi 2 is much quicker (so far). Rupp is out, first 6 in heat 2 go to the final.

Great performance by Ennis, I though she had a false start, as they said on C4 she went on the b of bang. Was nearly .4 of second clear of Chernova. In the womens 400 54.7 was the slowest qualifer to the semis and in the mens the slowest was 48.5, not the strongest of fields. Both of the 800's were good, in the womens only the heat winner was guaranteed qualification to the final. Jelimo looked good but was pipped by Rusanova from Russia.
