    Hi,

I would really appreciate some advice.
I'm getting married in just over a year and feel sick when I think about trying on dresses. I'm currently about 16 stone, size 18/20 to 20/22 depending on clothes and would love to be confident going dress shopping. I'm trying to be realistic about how much I can lose but I would love to be a size 12 or 14 for the wedding. I have been told that I would need to be ordering my dress in October so I'm hoping to lose approx 4 stone by October, is this possible?

It is possible. You are talking about 2 pounds a week. I think that's very much achievable. You can do it!

    Read these threads:

    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055157091

    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055963342

There is a lot of information in them but I suggest printing them out and just read over them and keep referring to them. It gives you a basic knowledge of nutrition and fitness. And if you have that you will have the knowledge to loose the weight. It worked for me. I lost 5 stone.

I lost weight by exercising 3/4 times a week and:

    - Learning how count calories.
    - Knowing my calorie limit for the day.
    - Eating lean meat like fish and chicken.
    - Eating only one portion of carbs a day.
    - Eating only whole grain. (rolled oats for me)
    - Staying away from refined carbs (while bread, white past, white rice, special k)
    - Eating lots of vegetables
    - Staying away from processed foods

If you make your meals from fresh, unprocessed foods you will know exactly what you are eating. By knowing about calories you can stay under your calorie limit. You need to burn more calories than what you take in. Find out how many calories applies to you. But read the threads first. They are really useful, trust me.

    Good luck

Feeling sick as I write this, I have fallen off the wagon and am back at square one. Devastated.
Am feeling under pressure and bouncing from one weight loss idea to another. I am even considering surgery even though it scares me and himself is against it.
I know I sound pathetic, I don't feel I can say it to friends and just needed to get this off my chest.

Meh, you've only lossed out on 12-15 weeks.. Still loads of time.

Prior to our wedding, Even though i didn't need to loose any weight, i stuck to my wifes diet to help her..

    I did the shopping/dinners/lunches..

We found that if you have your dinner prior to doing the food shopping you'll buy healthier stuff.

Also relying on excersise is a load of balls.. A one hr walk will only burn off a cookie worth of cals.. Better off going on a steamed chicked and brocolli diet and watch the weight fall off.

It's all been said here already. Cut out the refined carbs and processed foods, know your calorie limit and loads of veggies. One thing I will add though, LIFT WEIGHTS. Seriously, it will help you look and feel better. Even if you don't lose as much weight as you like, you will still look a lot more slim, trust me on that :) Keep going though, take it one day at a time.

Ok. Rather than let this feeling defeat you, use it. You feel lousy right now, well you start again. Now. Not tomorrow, right now. I have no idea what went wrong or why, but you need to figure that out. But you do need to know, so you can change tack and hopefully have more success.

Im not one for diets, I think they simply dont work, I think a more sustainable lifestyle change is better in the long run. And surgery is a massive step. I wouldnt consider it at all, not unless you are all out of options and your health is under threat. (dont do it for a dress).

Could not agree more. I think its the most overlooked aspect to fat loss. Unless you eat big you won't get big (muscle wise, I mean) , so combining a good calorie deficit (either through food intake or exercise) and some weight training will pay you back 10 fold.

You have until October, 4-5 months is plenty of time to get in great shape from 16 stone.

It sounds like you have some emotional problems attached to you're weight. It seems to be getting you down. Maybe see a psychologist to clear you're head, they can be very useful.

There is also something else you can try that I've heard (from reliable people) works wonders. You'd have to find one yourself though because I don't know any (I'm sure posters on here will) but it's a hypnosis session that turns you completely off sugar and you will nt crave sweet things.

Also if you have an exercise plan it can help you to stay motivated. You're plan to look good for a wedding; a weights routine would do this best (and it doesn't matter if you're a woman, you will NOT end up like a body builder, you will get toned and look wonderful) Maybe get in contact with a personal trainer to get you started.

    All the best.

I am in the same boat - I have about 16 months until my wedding. I'm currently 15stone. The good news is, about 3 months ago, I was 16st 11lbs. I've lost the weight by purely changing my diet. Over the past few weeks I've been hitting the gym, and the weight has just been falling off easily. You just need to change your preception on everything. I always run on the treadmill situated in front of the window, so I can see my reflection and trust me, it really encourages me to keep going (everyone has different ways to encourage themselves!) - At weekends I do allow treats for myself, and my other half also knows he wants to look good on our wedding day, and has been joining me on this lifestyle change. I am feeling incredible, and certainly 4 months ago, I never thought I'd be 1st 11lbs down!

I need to a lose a few stone myself so I know how you feel.
I hated being big as I was. Finding a trousers to fit me properly was a nightmare. The bigger I got the more I ate. I heard of slimming world so I decided to give it a try. Since Feb 2012 I have lost over 2 stone.
In slimming world you learn what you should be eating and how eating plenty of good food can to help you lose weight. Each day you also have a number of syns so you can have a treat each day or you could use your syns to have a takeaway if you pick the right food. They also encourage you take more exercise with the body magic awards which start with a 15 min walk each day.
Even with the amount of weight I have lost I am fitting into clothes I have not worn in a few years. The nicest thing is when people notice the weight loss.
If you look up www.slimmingworld.ie you can get more information.
Good luck and within a few months you will be having a great time shopping for your wedding dress.

    Hi op,

I would also recommend slimming world. I find it a great motivation to go for a weigh in each week the thoughts of it help me stay on track, also I go to a Monday meeting which really helps me not go off the rails on Sundays, I'm a demon for picking at food all day when I'm at home.

The reason I prefer sw to other slimming clubs is that the plan is just common sense, mainly eating a high fiber, low fat, non processed diet. Its very easy to follow and you can eat loads of different foods so you can tailor your plan to suit the food you like and your lifestyle. You do not have to count points or calories. The only things you have to watch are treats you are allowed some but you need to count these.

I usually do not stay to meetings, but I know a-lot of people find them usefull. I have lost 32lb in 20 weeks and if I followed it more closely or did exercise I'm sure it would be at least 10lb more. When you go to your first meeting the leader takes new people aside and explaines the plan and then you can sit through the meeting, then you can decide if you want to join, pay and get weighed. There is no pressure so if you think its not for you, you can just leave.

Good luck with your weight loss and your wedding.
    Mrs Muddle

Best of luck and take one day at a time. It's a marathon and you can do it

    You can totally do it!

I'm getting married in November myself and I started 2012 with 5 stone to lose - 5 months in I'm 2.5 stone down with another 5 months remaining to do the same over again. Even at my present halfway-there weight I look a million times better than I did in January.

Calorie counting on myfitnesspal.com is what's working for me - eating habits-wise I drastically reduced simple carbs (though I haven't completely eradicated them, that was too much for me), eat loads of good meat and green veg, a tiny bit of dark chocolate and am really careful about any weekend boozing.

I swim/water jog in the gym three times a week and I have a set of girly weights at home which I really must start using more.

Don't worry about a bad day, or even a bad week, you can always start again tomorrow.
