Hi all, just wondering are many of ye getting involved in this this year? As someone who has lost a few family members and friends to this dreaded disease, I, for one, am getting on board :)

    What is it

    Here is a link!

    In short:
Today FM's Shave or Dye is an annual charity drive to benefit the Irish Cancer Society. Our inaugural campaign in 2010 saw Today FM presenters ask listeners to sponsor them to shave and dye their hair, and in turn ask them to do the same. The response was phenomenal, as people across the length and breadth of the country raised more than €800,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

My bf and his dad are because his dad was treated for cancer recently. I think I might be too.

I'm shaving my head and then donating my hair (all 7-10" of it) to littleprincess.co.uk so they can use it to help make a wig for a child.

Looking for financial donations if anyone can help out....

I dye my hair so often that I don't think anyone would sponsor me for doing so at this stage :pac:. I have to raise money for charity in other ways!

I'm really tempted to do this this year. I've ALWAYS wanted to shave my head for charity, and I lost my Mam coming up on 3 years ago to cancer, and my best friend had a scare at the same time (luckily her treatment worked while my Mum's didn't, but it could easily me losing both of them, which scared the bejeesus out of me!), along with other members of my family, we all know how horrible and evil cancer is. I'd like to do something to help, even if it's just a little.

I've been tempted for years too. Finally taking the plunge this year! Have got masses of support from friends and family - not actually doing it for a few weeks but am all set to go, registered and all. Feel really glad that I decided now.
@baby - whatever you decide, good luck :)

I'd really encourage people to get involved this year. I had my head shaved as part of last year's campaign (my hair was just past my shoulders ) It was brilliant, everyone reacted so positively and I raised a lot of cash for an incredible charity.

You can donate €2 by texting the word SHAVE to 57080 :)

Was curious about that too, just found this after a google!

It was brilliant... everyone was so chilled out on the day, and even though I was a little nervous, once they shaved my head and I summoned up the courage to look in the mirror, I didn't care that I was bald cos I knew it was a fab experience.

I know it doesn't seem like it, but it is only hair so seriously consider it....

I think from the ads on tv, about €1.65 goes to the ICS.

I think I saw a mention somewhere that about €1.50 goes to the charity for text donations, which seems a bit low. If you have a look on mycharity.ie, you'll find quite a few people doing it, so maybe you'd be better off donating a fiver or a tenner through that.

It sounds horrible but I will not do it. I had chemo over 5 years ago for oesophageal cancer and promised myself that I would keep my hair long. I will as always give money to the Irish Cancer Society.

Edit: my hairdresser advised me against me dying my hair. I do feel bad about it but I found loosing my hair to be very distressing the first time.

No, it does not sound one bit horrible Cathy :) I can understand what you mean.
And this will sound corny as hell but it's for people like you that I am doing it.

Nah Cathy that doesn't sound horrible at all. In some ways I cheated when I was having my head shaved. My hair was going to fall out anyway from treatment, so I beat the chemicals to it and made it a little bit less terrible to lose all my hair. My hair still hasn't regrown because of radiation directly on my head, but one day..... and then I'll NEVER EVER EVER get it cut again :p:p

Funny story- I remember the day Mum decided to shave off her hair. I got a text:
I'm shaving my head. Yesterday there was a bigger fallout than Chernobyl ;)

Hi - this is from www.todayfm.com
The only thing we ask is that as much of the sponsorship money as possible is sent to the Irish Cancer Society by the end of April.

I don't think it matters how long you have it dyed for either etc - most important thing is to remember all that money you're raising for such a worthy cause :) Good Luck with it!

thanks T. i hope to set the date for mid march so will have money in well before april.

No prob! :) By the way, you can continue to raise money for up to a month after you get it done. I'm mid-March too and I know there's people I may not see until well after I do it, so it's nice to know they can contribute afterwards also...

As long as you get it to them by the end of April, it's ok ;)

Im also shaving my hair this Friday for Today FMs campaign. Everyone keeps saying to me " I pay u not to shave it" but at the end of the day its only hair and it will grow back. Cancer patients do not have the choice.. Is there any place I can donate my hair too here in Ireland? my hair is just to my shoulder, wud there be enough to make a wig or will I just sweep it up?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 234 ✭✭gemini_girl

    Hi,
I'm also shaving off my hair on 5th march. waiting on my pack to arrive in post. Does anyone know how I can bump my page on facebook? I had a few sponsors but then because people post my post is lost now so it would be good if i could have it the top of my profile so people will see it to donate. Also I'm looking for a salon to shave my head for free in Cork if anyone knows of any salons supporting shave or dye please let me know! Emma

Good on ya for doing this. As far as I've found, hair needs to be at least 6" in order to be donated (and some places require at least 12"). My hair goes a few inches past my shoulders, so I'll be securing it in small ponytails all around my head, then shaving them individually. This will ensure that the max length gets cut. If your hair's only to your shoulders it may not be 6" from root to tip. I'm donating my hair to littleprincesses.co.uk, where they require 7". The only Irish charity I've come across is rapunzelfoundation.com, but they send the hair to New Zealand and it must be at least 12" long.

I just keep reposting it (cut & paste the mycharity.ie link) as a new status update.

I don't know of any salons specifically, but I'm having a private event at my house & using my husband's hair clippers to shave off mine. That said, if you want to do it in a salon I'm sure most any of them would be willing to do it in the name of charity (and publicity!)

Do it anyway. And if you get in trouble/suspended then you at least you can say you have helped people and people in the future who will be going through this disease :)

I'm dying my hair for it, My aunt who only has a few weeks left to live due to a ten year battle with cancer, won't allow me to shave my hair. I lost my grandad almost four years ago to cancer. My best friends sister was only 27 when died from cervical cancer last month. If what I raise can help at least one person then I will be happy.

As happy as I am to be participating this year, I would not advocate shaving or dying if it goes against regs. Unfortunately, it's not enough to be doing it simply for a good cause, and in fact I would imagine there could be some backlash against the fundraising event on a whole if people were breaking school/professional rules in order to do so.

If garretty6 really wants to be involved, I would suggest helping out someone else who can shave/dye - maybe help them during their fundraising event, or offer to pay for the salon who's doing the cut/dye. Or simply by making a thoughtful donation to the event in the name of someone s/he knows who has or is battling cancer.

Is there any sort of list of places that will do this? I want to get my hair dyed and I've raised some money from friends and relatives but I'm not sure how to find a place that will dye it either free or on the cheap...

There's no list on the official website...perhaps set up a fundraising page and approach your local barber/salon - promise them a mention & to call the local papers if they donate the hair-do?

Well, assuming you're suspended because of your participation instead of prior to it, I can't say you didn't deserve the punishment. IMO, doing it when you know you're going to be punished really feels more like rebellion instead of just trying to help out a good cause. Kinda cheapens the whole event imo.

Hope you raised good funds anyway

Just to let you guys know, there is an Irish charity that takes donated hair to make wigs for children - Rapunzel or something, run by a lady called Anna Furlong in New Ross!

I don't know anything about it hun, having no hair of my own to speak of! At least the wigs will end up on Irish kids though, no? I know a few people who have little kids who have lost their hair.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7 BDIs

rapunzels dont guaruante that the donated hair comes back to ireland but as far as i know they recieve a few for the hair, this money is then donated to children with alopecia to buy wigs from the new zealand company. 864 children between the age of 2 -14yrs have alopecia
heres a link http://www.irishhairdressers.ie/rapunzel/197-rapunzel.html it would be great if people donig the shave a dye fundraiser could also donate hair to a charity like this, someone earlier in the thread mentioned and english charity who take ponytails of a shorter lenth and coloured hair to.
its great to see so many people supporting charitys. keep up the good work.

    Done!

What was almost mid-back length hair is now about 1/2" shave. Big day of it today, lots of families & friends to support, and my 5-yr old did the first cut.

Have raised about €600 so far...hopefully more will come in once the proof's out there.
