I have a silvercrest SL 65/12 satellite reciever and was wondering if it is possible to get Setanta on it? i see on astra 19.2 E with the following code beside it :

11681 V 27491

V A PCR 2328 2329 2307.

The Channel number is 0624. and 0625 is setanta sport 1.

The reason i think it is possible is that Box Nation was on this box a while back and now it is scrambled . So could setanta not unscramble for me , for a fee of course.....

Or is available via any other metho apart from sky? i cant get cable in my area....

You will not be able to pick up setanta using your silvercrest receiver which is a fta receiver, Setanta is not free on any platform. You can either pay for it using Sky or UPC.

I think you can also view certain matches on the eircom website if you are an eircom broadband customer.

ok, if i bought a second hand sky box and got a fta card would it work? or would the same rules apply?

No it would not work, Setanta is not a FTA channel

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭Dessiemc27

I wonder why these channels appear on fta platform boxes when you cannot get them

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 231 ✭✭Dessiemc27

I am not looking to get it for free, i want to pay for it...... so basically if you dont have sky or cable i cannot get a subscription

No as long as you have a sky receiver and a sky card, they will switch it on.
i.e you don't need to have a sky sub as well, it's €16.99 per month.

Thank you zimmer - Do they send you a card to recieve the signal? or can they send the signal to the card in the box?

You will need an old Irish card, dont think they will supply you with one but you could ask them. Once you have a card in the box they ask you for details of the box such as serial no software etc and the card no and they will send a signal which usually switches on within a few hours.

Much Appreciated ... some good national league games coming up and setanta are screening them...

Yes, I got a card from Setanta to watch the free Setanta stuff (Broadcasting authority of Ireland), they activated the card and I also got Viva, Sony tv, Motors tv and LFC tv.
They can also send the signal to the card in the box.

They will send out a card for their FTV programming?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,343 ✭✭✭liamtech

I confess i didnt know there was an IRISH FTV CARD!

I know there is one for the UK and it was previously reported that it works with the Ferguson Box ...

If there is one for the Republic of Ireland, why does it not also make RTE1 and the rest of our stations available??

Yes
http://www.setanta.com/ie/Join-Now1/Satellite/SATELLITE-FAQS/#9

"How can I watch programming which is funded under the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland Sound & Vision Scheme
Setanta Sports supports programming that is funded under the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland Sound & Vision Scheme and broadcasts this programming on a free to view basis such that it may be enjoyed by anybody with satellite equipment and viewing card regardless of whether they are subscribers to the Setanta Sports Pack. If you have a satellite set top box, but do not have a satellite viewing card, we will upon request send you free of charge a satellite viewing card to an address in the Republic of Ireland in order that you can enjoy the Sound & Vision Scheme funded programming.
"

I got one of the cards from Setanta, but two be honest I dont use it two often, have it removed as we use the old Sky+ box for FTA stations.
ps. Setanta activated the card but it did not activate the record function.

When the card was activated, I was suprised to get Viva ( have on freeview already), Sony tv , Motors tv and LFC tv.

I find anything marked free on the sky tv guide for Setanta or other Sky channels.
I've watched a couple of Irish made films, sometimes on a Monday night, one about young people growing up in I think Ballymun and a second film about the Hunger Strike.

Yes, After contact with Setanta I was sent a white Sky card. I had to ring Setanta to activate the card and they also asked for some details on the box.
Yes they can send signal, on activation they mistakenly also activated the Setanta Sports channels. I had them free for over a month, however this has now been resolved and I dont get free Setanta sports any more, only the free programmes on Setanta.

I found Setanta to have good customer Service well mannered, On ringing first I had to explain about getting the card and the Sound and Vision Scheme, the Setanta guy had to go and find out and he rang me back later in the day. I got the card around 10 days later.
Setanta have advised me that I'm welcome in the future to subscribe to Setanta.
If I had the money to spare I would be tempted for the GAA.

I had tried to get a card by emailing details to customerservice ..... and eventually got a reply asking for further details about how I was to pay etc.

I rang an 0818 number today, spoke to a couple of people who knew nothing at all about this ...... 'will have to get on to Dublin to find out what is going on' ...... and will ring me back I was told.

Hopefully the ~€2 spent on the call will be worth it :)

Good to know they will send out viewing cards now. I remember a time when you would have better luck getting blood from a stone.

rang them myself and was told they will have to 'get on to head office' about this - despite it being on their website they didnt really know where they stood for sending cards out.

gave my address and they said that they will send it out once they know where they stand...

Il ring them back in a week if there is no news

I have been trying, on and off, since last Nov/early Dec to get a card out of them.
I haven't given up though :D

Can the card be used in other STBs or only in a Sky box?

I may have been just lucky and got a Setanta person on a good day.
I hope you get your card.

Its been reported that Sky cards are used in Ferguson Ariva 120 I think, and some other box's.
I tried the card in the older model Ariva HD Combo, it did'nt work for me.

I have an Ariva 120 combo so will try it in that if/when I get it.

Thanks.

I have no idea about activating Sky or any other card or what is involved.

I seem to recall reading that some Sky cards are tied to particular boxes or something like that .... but have no personal experience of such.

First I have to get a card :D

I've used my Sky card in other boxes to view Setanta.Active Sky cards are paired to boxes in order for record functions and premium channels to work.

If it's just an expired card you need then ask some of your friends or relations who may have cancelled their Sky sub for one.All you need do is pop the card into a Skybox and ring Setanta with the card number to have it activated, you won't get any of the Sky channels obviously but Setanta will work fine.

I wasn't aware that an expired Sky card would suffice and that Setanta could activate their service on such a card. Thanks for that info ..... I might have such a card in a drawer someplace ;)

Thank you.

Update:

Received a card in the post this morning.

It is a SKY card! Stuck to a Sky letter-headed page! With all the Sky conditions printed on the rear!

I dunno know what I was expecting, but this rather threw me.
I will have to think about this ...... some of the conditions are not really acceptable .....

it can only be used in the address to which it is sent
it can only be used in the box in which it is activated
Sky continue to own the card
the card must be kept in the box at all times and that box must not be switched off
the software in the box is owned by Sky
I MUST allow Sky to update the software in the box whenever they choose
if the box has a telephone connection Sky can use it at will and I must pay the cost

Why am I upset?

Well, for one, I never authorised Setanta to disclose my name and address to Sky.
Neither was I informed that my details would be shared with anyone else.
In fact I was not aware that I would be issued a SKY card when I requested a free card from Setanta.

I did not wish to have any dealings with Sky ....... it seems I should have checked this thing out in more detail before I made the request for a card. :(

Wouldn't worry about it,they are just general t&c's for the use of the card.Even if you used an old card you found in a drawer it is covered by those t&c's.

Setanta use Sky cards as Sky customers are their target on satellite. They need to use Sky equipment to authorise the card.
Setanta don't provide their own unique cards and no you won't be paying for Sky.If you are lucky you might have received a FTV card which will give you some extra channels such as LFCTV and Sony TV.

Stick it in a Skybox and give Setanta a buzz with the card number and you are up and running.

Hi Johnboy1951,

I dont worry about having a sky card, when I got my card from Setanta, I just rang Setanta they activated the card with the old sky box and I get extra channels LFC, Motors tv, Sony, Viva and the free stuff on Setanta.
I dont leave the card in all the time as I also use the box for the free English channels ITV, C4, C5 etc.
I also power of the box from the mains at night or when box is not in use as a safety measure.
No problems.
I have had no contact from sky on any matter in relation to the card.

And I am also glad you got your card, I'm not the only one now:).

Just a question away from the main topic, why do you power off your box every night? I have just cancelled Sky and next month I plan on using a freesat card. I am wondering should I do the same?

You shouldn't really if you are using a FTV card as it may miss a "keep alive" signal. The box will switch itself to a low power state when not in use anyway.

Just a thought,if I order a card from Sky then I should get a FTV card, could be a handy way of getting a free one.I'd have no intention of getting Setanta to activate it as I already have Setanta. The only fly in the ointment though is the EPG,will it be a default UK FTV card and provide the UK EPG on a HD box?

:D
I of course had a wee bit of hassle when I rang Setanta to activate the card .... the lady I got through to was fixated on an account and payments etc etc ...... afraid I ended up being a little short and refusing to go through the whole explanation thing ..... so she put me through to another lady who knew exactly what I needed and all was done quite quickly.

Next I have to see how best I can use the card in an Ariva 120. It was activated in an old Sky box.
Hopefully it will work in the Ariva.

I guess I will have to get the tuning details of the 'extra' channels .... like Sony & Sony+1 etc ....... and get them entered in the Ariva and see if I can get them integrated with the Free to view channels.

Anyone done this? ..... probably best if I take that question to another thread I suppose ....

Thanks all for the info and help on this ...... the result is good it seems :D .... so far

I power off the box at night as a safety precaution.
I found if I left it powered on, I would also leave the tv, DVD, video, Wii etc also powered on.
For peace of mind in relation to fire safety, we power off as much as possible in our house (no little red stand bye lights left on if possible).

I mentioned powering off the box from the mains, as johnboy 1951 had mentioned in a previous post re-sky terms
"the card must be kept in the box at all times and that box must not be switched off"

http://www.dublincity.ie/WATERWASTEENVIRONMENT/DUBLINFIREBRIGADE/FIREPREVENTION/FIRESAFETYADVICE/Pages/FireSafetyintheHome.aspx

"Last thing at night
• Ensure spark guards are in front of open fires
• Switch off and unplug all electrical items. Do not leave the television, radio or computer on standby.
• Plug out phone chargers
• If your exit requires a key for opening, ensure the key is in the lock before going to bed
• Ensure all escape routes are clear
• Close all doors (especially from the kitchen and living room)
Switch off and unplug all non-essential appliances when not in use"

Some good tips from the above link, thanks to "Dublin Fire Brigade".

When I got the card it did nothing,
Neither with the Irish EPG or the UK EPG. (I could check as I had an older white card for ROI EPG, however on sky cancellation the older sky card was useless for LFC, Motors etc but would show Irish EPG.)
The new card had to be activated by Setanta and on activation they activated for my address in ROI.
