In the USA, AM/FM stations don't pay royalties on the basis that airplay promotes the artist and sells records. They have been hit on their online streaming for royalties. Some national royalty bodies aren't keen on collecting money for US artists on the grounds that nothing comes back for airplay of their artists in the USA.

This is what City Channel used to avoid payments AFAIK.

How does it work if an act come into studio to play? Particularly bigger bands on promotional tours?

Don't know about City Channel but I would have thought it would be difficult to get an exemption from the norm.

If an act comes into studio you have to ask them for the song details and report it with the other airplay returns. Most stations are on 100% reporting.

    hmmm....

How would one get royalties from IMRO?

In other words, could Pat Shorte claim royalties from IMRO for singing 22222 on the telly if it is played in a shop?

I am in the wrong business....

If I sing in an IMRO paying store, can I claim royalties from IMRO??

We're looking at this in the wrong way guys!! we could be millionaires!!

    One registers with IMRO.

    Shops pay a tarriff.

IMRO have the worlds most sophisticated calculator to divvy up the royalties amongst their members using a formula devised by Einstein.

If you were to sing in a store you would return that information to IMRO. Same as paying a venue.

We don't drag up old threads. Although there was an interesting case recently where a district judge threw out a claim by PPI for royalties against a small shop.
