I think most cars have one owner, certainly, but a lot of cars have more than one regular driver.

    How?

And I'm completely calm, thanks. ;)

I just don't see how putting the age of the driver on the reg. plate would have any usefulness whatsoever, unless, as I say, you're going to pre-judge the driver based on that information.

What usefulness did you envisage for it?

At least, the points idea, while it would be pretty impossible to either implement or police, would have a certain logic behind it.

I can see that someone of your.. vintage would take umbrage with this.
I think it would be a great idea so that I could stay clear of your senior moments.

Anyone for whom this is an issue should be permanently disqualified from holding a driving licence.

The fact that anyone voted for this guy is a sad indictment on the country/people of south Kerry.

So even if the guy only gote a single vote the entire population of South Kerry/Ireland are idiots ?

This might just scare Merkel and Sarkozy into leaving us alone when they realise some of us elected this goon proving we're capable of anything.

Not at all, but then he didn't just receive one vote. He kept getting in time and time again. And then when that wasn't enough they voted in his son.

TBH I really don't know who his electorate are. I've yet to meet a Kerry man or woman who had anything but thinly veiled contempt for the guy and his cronies. He must ship them in from some lost valley of inbreeds. Or as one Kerry bloke said to me, he's shipping them in from Cork :D

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

He's right: change the reg system - but not for *that* bull**** reason. During the boom, car regs which identified the age of the car at a glance fuelled ridiculous spending habits. Go back to assigning letters to different counties, let them work their way through the alphabet and only car nerds will know how old a jalopy is.

Is seperating idiots from their money really such a bad thing ? And on the plus side all those people regularly replacing their cars meant a bountiful supply of even cheaper second hand vehicles :D

    Anyone remember the early nineties?

    Bring back "for reg" :D

What was the point in changing the reg numbers in the first place? The theory I heard was having a year would encourage more people to change their cars regularly. Is this bullsh*t?

After the sh1te they came up with giving imported (as in not by a dealer, we don't make cars here) cars a number greater than the amount of cars ever sold in the county it wouldn't surprise me if they went through with it.

For example if you're the first to bring a 2010 car in from some country and register in cork you will get 10-C-40000

In Dublin it would be 120,000 because they never sold that many cars in one year they decided to pick this. A different number was picked for each county, so in Leitrim its probably around 100.

Big thread about this in the motor forum, most speculate its to give imports a bad name. I think myself its to give people the false impression that way more cars were sold in a year then there actually were because they were very quiet about bringing this in

Are you absolutely sure about this because it used to be that case that when you import a car you are allocated the next available number for that year. Naturally its going to be a high number as its the last one registered for that year.

I have imported in excess of 20 cars and thats the way it has always been as i liked to have round numbers (eg 5100, 3200, 4500 etc etc) and would ring up a few times to see where the numbers were at and when it was close to a round number i'd leave the paperwork with someone i knew who worked in the VRT office and they would allocate me the number when it became available.

I have a mate who still works there so i'll ask him if what you said was true, i cant see that it is as it makes no sense whatsoever. A car having a high number means nothing to the vast majority of people.

One thing you can be guaranteed is JJ Kavanaghs will get the number one reg for Offaly, Tipp North, Tipp South, Carlow and Kilkenny every year

So where are you from Op? it would nice to compare the moral superiority of the TDs elected in your constituency down through the years to that of south kerry. Same goes for anyone who believes the people of S kerry should embarrassed, maybe they should be ? but first lets look at the TDs elected in your area.

Every car within a 100km radius of me has a 13 on it. It doesn't appear to be particularly unfortunate.

I'm positive. I saw a car regd 10-C-40004. There were no 40000 cars sold in Cork that year.

My own car just barely escaped this new silly sytem because it was imported on the 22nd of November last year. The new ****e came in on 5th of December

Hilarious and ironic that a man who lives in a county with KY on the number plate is more worried about having a 13 on the plate, then advertising a certain jellylike lubricant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,266 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

Two New Year's Eves this year, singing out 2012, singing in 2013, singing out 2013, and finally singing in 2014. That's what's going to happen in South Kerry anyway.

The whole yeary registration is ex Celtic Tiger keeping up with the Jones' bull****. Look at my shiny new car! It's new. Can't you tell? See here... yea... 12. It only took €30,000 worth of debt but now I'm better than you. Jealous?

Does he really? It wouldn't surprise me if he drove a D reg for resale value and if anyone asks he'll say its cause he "works" in Dublin. another reason why the current system has to go

I didn't say he drove a KY plate ... more that the county did.

he got precedent on this im afraid gentlemen

you cant get the number 666 on your car for the VERY same reason

bad luck apparently to have the number 666 on your car so they dont issue it

so how is this any different than banning 13 ?

our nutty overlords have been doing this for a while now

but i still think he is a dick, and should be shot to death with balls of his own sh1te :-)

I think you can get 666 on a plate, can't you?

The one in the picture illustrating the Journal.ie article has all the nines, so I can't believe they would have an issue with 666.

I think the current system of reg is brilliant. Simple and to the point.

Year of Reg - County - No. of the car registered.

Many people from abroad whom I have spoken to about the issue think it is brilliant too.

I cannot believe that not only is this gobshíte only talking about crap constantly, but he is raping the Irish tax payer of €150,000 a year to do so!

And as for the whole people feeling bad for not having a reg as new as their neighbours, they should invest in a good self help book and a good dose of cop on if all they are concerned about is what year car neighbours have.

It is true of Des Bishop and Tommy Tiernan when they said money didn't suit us!!!! We were better off poor and more concerned about things that mattered rather than our over-inflated egos!!!!!!

Just as well that his dad & his FF cronies have ensures that very few of us will be able to afford them, then!

I used to think that Kerrymen jokes were clichéd and borderline racist!

Maybe Michael could organise a telephone poll vote to see what the public thinks ? We could allow his ****wit da into Leinster House specially for the day and all!

Arsebiscuits. The Revenue hold on to desireable numbers so that they can sell them for 1000 Euro. 666, 777, 888, 999 are ones like that, as are 911 for the Porsche drivers out there, 12 D 89 for the Aston Martin Drivers. I bought 888 and 999 for a car and bike I had a few years ago and 666 was available at the time too.

Nothing like a Healy-Rae to stir emotions. I personally think that they are
caricatures of the Kerryman but it seems to work for them so.

To be fair the reason he gets elected is because behind all the culchie shtick he actually does his job very well .ie he's one of the very few politicians who listens to his electorate and actually does what he can to help them.

He may be a sterotype but he gets the job done ;) and we appreciate it.

Honest answer - I've none. Had hoped that FG & Labour would be true to their promises and end the corruption & incompetence and unfairness, but that was as "the best of a bad lot" and I've been proven very wrong, at least on the last two, with a few shadows of the first showing their ugly face too.
