So this years World Cup Of Darts gets under way this afternoon in Germany. I really enjoyed last years tournament, it had plenty of shocks and the unique format made for good viewing. Hopefully Ireland can put in a better showing this year but we will need Mick McGowan to really up his game, Willie pretty much played on his own last year!

    Today's (Complicated!) schedule of play:

    First Round Order of Play
Canada (John Part & Ken MacNeil) v Hungary (Nandor Bezzeg & Kristian Kaufmann)
Republic of Ireland (William O'Connor/Mick McGowan v Malaysia (Lee Choon Peng/Amin Bin Abdul Ghani)
USA (Darin Young & Gary Mawson) v Philippines (Christian Perez & Lourence Ilagan)
Austria (Mensur Suljovic & Dietmar Burger) v New Zealand (Warren French & Preston Ridd)
Sweden (Magnus Caris & Dennis Nilsson) v Japan (Haruki Muramatsu & Morihiro Hashimoto)
Spain (Antonio Alcinas & Carlos Rodriguez) v South Africa (Devon Petersen & Shawn Hogan)
Finland (Petri Korte & Marko Kantele) v Croatia (Boris Krcmar & Tonci Restovic)
Gibraltar (Dylan Duo & Dyson Parody) v Denmark (Per Laursen & Jann Hoffmann)

    Second Round
Play split across Friday night & Saturday afternoon sessions
Draw Bracket - to be used from Second Round onwards
    England (1) v Canada/Hungary
    Germany (8) v USA/Philippines
    Wales (5) v Finland/Croatia
    Scotland (4) v Spain/South Africa
    Australia (2) v Republic of Ireland/Malaysia
    Belgium (7) v Sweden/Japan
    Northern Ireland (6) v Gibraltar/Denmark
    Netherlands (3) v Austria/New Zealand

    Evening Session (8pm-12am)
16 x Singles matches. Top ranked player from each team plays second ranked player from opposing team.
Best of seven legs, 501 Singles, loser throws first.
One point awarded for each match winner.

Second Round Singles Order of Play
    Northern Ireland v Gibraltar/Denmark
Brendan Dolan v Dyson Parody/Jann Hoffman
Michael Mansell v Dylan Duo/Per Laursen

    Belgium v Sweden/Japan
Kim Huybrechts v Dennis Nilsson/Morihiro Hashimoto
Kurt Van De Rijck v Magnus Caris/Haruki Muramatsu

    Australia v Republic of Ireland/Malaysia
Simon Whitlock v Mick McGowan/Amin Bin Abdul Ghani
Paul Nicholson v William O'Connor/Lee Choon Peng

    Wales v Finland/Croatia
Mark Webster v Marko Kantele/Tonci Restovic

Well if we don't beat Malaysia something is up...but that appears to be the end of the line for us. The Aussies are gonna take some beating.

yeah we should beat malaysia. last year we gave the aussies a fright, we missed a few doubles which cost us dearly , we could have beaten. having said that the aussies are a good shout to win the WC. if on form id' say they will get to the SF or final

Denmark just beat Gibraltar 5-4. It's the only game I saw all afternoon and the standard was dreadful.

Well done to Wille and Mick, gonna be tough to beat the Aussies but you never know!

Jaysis Dolan was pure muck there. Beaten 4-3 by Hoffmann of Denmark

What I have seen so far has been painful to watch. It can only get better...

Well that was pretty disappointing from the Irish lads! Mick actually played ok but Willie was very disappointing, he is much better than that! He started shaking the head though and got frustrated. Gonna take something special to win the doubles.

Ha ha. Delighted that smug twat was beaten. Learn to count Phil or do you have no respect for your opponents?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

Don't have Sky Sports but just seen on SSN that Taylor was beat in his singles game by Canada's Ken MacNeil. That is a huge shock IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 738 ✭✭✭AndyP

And Lewis just beaten now too! Bye bye ingurrrland!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭dartbhoy

England have the doubles game though to win which is worth 2 points and would force a tie. However I'm not so sure that the Taylor and Lewis combination is the best but we'll find out for certain tomorrow!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,604 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

England still 7/4 favs to win the entire competition.

Kind of ironic that a scoring system clearly designed to keep the tie alive for the weaker nations going into the doubles, has in fact helped the top ranked team.

    3/1 Australia.
    6/1 Scotland.
    8/1 Wales.
    8/1 Holland.
    33/1 Canada.

    50s bar.

England got through in the end. Surprise surprise.

South Africa got past Scotland who blew it.

Germany also blew it against the US, should have seen the match out. Mawson & Young enjoyed the win, can't blame them.

    Quarter finals are
    Australia v Belgium
    England v USA
    Wales v South Africa
    Netherlands v Northern Ireland

I don't think Huybrecht's girlfriend is there, so Nicholson might have a chance in this one!

The semi-finals are probably what everyone expected. Would love the Welsh to go and win it now. Really don't want the Aussies to win, Nicholson should not be playing for them!

    Could you explain why
    Kingp35 wrote: »

He is an Australian citizen so perfectly entitled to play for them. Where he was born or previously lived means nothing.
Do you apply the same logic to the Irish football team?

1st semi final result; Australia 5 Holland 1.

Personally I would yes. You should have blood routes to a particular country to be able to play for them. Nicholson is not Australian, neither are any of his descendants so he should not be playing darts for them. It's akin to those Brazilian lads playing football for Japan just because they managed to get a Japanese passport. It's ridiculous.

Taylor beaten again, well done Burnett.

I don’t know why Barney even bothers showing up these days. He never looks happy.
Delighted Brunet stuffed Taylor, Hope Webster can so a job on Lewis.

2nd semi final result; England 5 Wales 1. Taylor won his first singles game of the tournament today against Webster! Australia v England final.

You'd have to imagine that England have this World Cup wrapped up now. I really can't see Nicholson beating Lewis!

Have only watched bits of it online. When this tournament first played back in December 2010 I really enjoyed it but for some reason this time It doesn't seem to have captured the darts fans imagination.

I know nothing. Good win for Nicholson!! Final is going all the way!!

Overall tournament was fairly poor but it's a good nights darts tonight :)

Tonight's not too bad but the quality overall is poor for the tournament.

I think the crowd are just too quite.

Probably already being said but isn't the chemistry between Lewis and Taylor terrible.

I know they have history, but Lewis is like the bold child up there

What makes you think Lewis started it??
Nicholson would be more likely in my opinion.

It looked like Lewis refused to shake Nicholsons hand but maybe it was the other way around? Im sure Nicholson will be on twitter shortly...

What a final that turned out to be in the end. The tension during the sudden death leg was unreal. Gutted for Australia. Well, for Whitlock really.

Don't know what happened there at the end with Nicholson and Lewis. Lewis seemed p!ssed off with Nicholson over something. I think it was something to do with Taylor. Nicholson shook his hand alright, but it wasn't very genuine.

Just rewinded it there, Lewis went mouthing to Nicholson about something.

Have no idea what it was about but Lewis shouldn't have done that on live TV regardless of what Nicholson may or may not have said.

If he did refuse you can bet he had good reason.Nicholson turns into a childish nutjob when he's beaten.

He obsessed with beating Taylor and winning a televised tournament. If he concentrated on his darts rather than these vendettas he would achieve a lot more. Hes a very good player when you put the character and theatrics aside

Possibly so. The last time this was held it came across as a way more exciting and interesting and there was some real crackers of games. Maybe it was the format this time that turned fans off but The few games I watched seemed dull and lifeless and I got the opinion that some of the players didn't seem too bothered about the whole thing.

Taylor didn't seem bothered at all, looked like he was embarrassed when Lewis was trying to celebrate with him.

Definitely.I used to like him even when most didn't but ever since he started this Taylor obsession I've gone right off him.
He has created a rivalry for his own ego, basically trying to say he's up there with the very best.

Yeah at times Taylor was acting as though he couldn't give a s**t about the whole thing. I see a picture posted on another forum of Lewis celebrating after the win over USA but Taylor seemed to be just staring at him more or less saying calm down Ade!
