Manly car vs Girly car

Simple question. What do you think makes a car a "manly car" or a "girly car"?

Like one may think something like this is a girly car:

    Beetle%20main.jpg

While something like this would be more of a manly car:
    aston_martin_dbs.jpg

So what is it about these car that might make them quite gender specific? and I don't think its just to do with the amount of power the car has...

The VW says less about your sex and more about your sexuality ;)

It's very easy really. All cars are female but the Sh1tty ones are made by man for woman to be driven by woman unless man needs a loan as man car is in the garage etc....

Some manufacturers make gender aimed cars. Personally I think if the driver is worried about driving a ladies car they must be getting none or are extremely self conscious and paranoid

However I certainly wouldn't be seen near this let alone in this...

I think the flower holder in the new Beetle effectively consigned it to a "woman's" car which is bizarre given the broad nature of the customer base of the original Beetle. Arguably the BMW Mini has a more delicate profile but is very well regarded for men to drive - I even know someone who swapped a 911 CS for one rather than a GTi or similar. THe DB9 (?) is not particularly masculine in my opinion (I know 2 women who have Vantage and DBS and many others who covet them).

Massive screw up by VW to launch a retro car to one gender rather than both.

On the point of the Aston, I was on Barrow Street today and saw an 09-D DBS (yes S not 9). Was going into the car park beside Eurospar (is that part of Gasworks, I have a space in Gasworks but enter under gasometer). Who on earth managed to buy one here in 2009?

agreed - drive what you want. For example a Mazda MX5 girls car? a Mini Cooper girls car? - I wouldn't care I'd drive both and I'm not a girl.

    +1
Is it really a month already since the last one?

Had a good ol burn off her mini Cooper the other morning, you'd be missing out if you gave up the chance to drive one on a good twisty road due to any insecurities.

But there is something about a car that seems to make it "girly" or "manly"...

Like for example one could consider the Ferrari California to be slightly on the girly side:
    ferrari-california-26-06-09.jpg

While something like Golf GTi though smaller and less power could be consider more "manly"...

Its like what makes cars "cool" or "uncool" I guess. Its just that something you can't quite put your finger on...

Also agree you should drive what you want... Still being a car nut, its always fun categorising cars into categories.

This is a car I have always considered extremey cool buy again is a bit gender specific:

Myself and a friend have a theory of that if you do see a woman driving a Mini Cooper or Fiat 500, chances are, 9/10 times, it's a hot chick.

Having said that, the fiat 500 looks to be quite the nippy little yoke, I'd like one! :D

Nothing feminine about an Abarth 500 esseesse!

^Would consider a Mini Cooper S (especially a JCW one) to be on the manly side too...
The original Mini cooper is definitely very manly as well!

I drive the GF's MX5 and it is a great car. Really don't care if man/woman car.
There are limits however, I would refuse a lift to hospital in a pink Micra convertible if I was bleeding to death.
And this is definitely not something the average girly girl will drive: (If she does, I want her number)

Its subjective really, for instance this concept car (the Volvo YCC) was designed by women, for women. You cant really get more "girly" than that. I dont think it looks particularly feminine. Except for the tampon holder on the dash...probably :p
    2004-Volvo-YCC-Concept-FA-1024x768.jpg
That said, this would be my vote for a stereotypical "super girly car" (nissan figaro)

Funny you say that, the woman drives the beast (the little one) every now and again and comes up through Ballsbridge and Donnybrook on the way home from work and gets let out through every junction and receives plenty of winks. On the other hand if she goes through Churchtown / Nutgrove she could be sitting there half the day trying to get out.

    Begrudging bastards! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,080 ✭✭✭✭Big Nasty

Only two types of people can get away with driving these - decent looking women between 20 and 35 and gay guys:
    nissan_figaro_91_03.jpg
Same can be said for a Micra I suppose!

BOTH cars in the OP are girly. With so much roundness and computer styling, its hard to find a manly car these days. But here's what I'd consider manly:

My Dad worked for Ford for years and had one just like that - a 2.8 Ghia Auto. Loved that car! :)

Cars can become girly too. The Mk1 Audi TT was quite masculine at launch, but was progressively neutered by nervous (male) drivers.

I wouldn't say roundness makes a car girly. Some of the "manliest" cars I know are composed of nothing but curves. And the curves are not just muscular but also feminine. Its the right application and proportions which gives a car that slightly aggressive and masculine look.

50-60s Jags are best example of this:
    tumblr_lgwr07acKf1qhrcubo1_500.jpg

    jaguarxj13-rear.jpg

    Honorable mentions:
    454d786da457b6f4ab7609ec4b9059e3.jpg

    Lamborghini-Miura-01.jpeg

Hard a find a good modern example though... I think its because modern cars seem to lack that "rawness" these cars have... Maybe too much carbon fiber and electronics...

    Indeed!

I asked one of my lady friends about this, and what she'd consider "a ladies car". It turns out, unless it's a fire breathing 60's mustang, pretty much everything is!
I showed her some fto's...and she dismissed them straight off as being really girly...and i'm not even joking!

I'd love a Fiat 500. Would absolutely love one. But not such a rural car...:(

Someone here mentioned a Golf GTI? Unless its an oldie, then its less manly, more man-boobs. A flabby brand exercise.

Would tend to agree with this. Its about extremes. A Nissan Figaro, yes its delicate. A Chrysler 300CC, like a Mustang, its in your face male. Plus if I really have to call it, Jags. I'm not sure about the latest jags but VERY FEW WOMEN I've encountered have ever got excited by Jags. They're (or were) in your face British muscle. Me, I love them. We had a 3.4S when I was WAY too young to understand. I thought every car was like a cockpit. Next up was a loveable & gutsy, but plain Jane, Beetle. And another.....

^You've got to be kidding to consider a Jag D type or a Ferrari 250tr to be a girls car.

I think you're confusing feminine design elements in a car's styling with a gender preference of a car.

I'll put it to you this way:

Ask a man to imagine a vibrator. He'll describe it as long, hard, veiny, ugly, similar in every way to a natural mickey except it looks like a mickey on steroids.

Ask a woman, she'll describe it like one of those cars above.

You would be amazed how many women drive trucks around here, and not just 'dainty' compacts like my V8 Dodge Dakota (considered a 'small' truck despite being 18ft long) - I see women here driving Ford F150's and Ram 2500s.
