I'm planning on running for president.
    Not really.

Think this is going to be my third election season on here, looking forward to the drama! *rubs hands*

Election: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the potential candidates. Their annual mission: to explore strange new tactics, to seek out new freebies to hand out as bribes for votes, to boldly make promises that everyone has already made before.

Elections will almost certainly be held on Feb 29th, will be called soon. (Need to convene the Election and Appeals Committee to formally call them)

There'll be more info in the all student email.

So far I've heard for President:

    Naoise
    Fiach

    Quelle surprise...

Aren't the faculty rep elections held in October though?

Any possible runners for Welfare/Comms/Clubs & Socs? Haven't heard of anyone myself.

Nope, they've been brought in line with the rest of the Exec elections.

Totally gonna close this topic to make my life easier.
    Just a matter of time...

Am I going crazy, or is this the thread of the day?
Also, I thought Fiach was going for Welfare again, and not for president? But I could be wrong.

Coming to my last few months in Maynooth & to be honest I am still not sure what these people do and the point of it all. If there has been any noticeable change or difference in my time here, I must have missed it.

At this point I can't say I care much for who gets elected and if the USI's latest self pay rise voted in by nearly all the SU's in the country is anything to go by... Just the fact that the USI is out in the press every day giving out about how "their" students are being made suffer, how they were lied to by the government, then in an almost classical Irish politicians move they and their cronies vote on a pay increase for themselves. It's truly despicable!

On that basis I would suggest that these elections are simply a stepping stone for career politicians of which I would have very little good to say about.

I'm not saying that everyone who runs in these elections are career politicians, but some certainly are. Particularly those that are members of Fianna Fail/FG/Labour youth groups are surely in it for the long haul.

Also some of these guys aged 25+ still hanging about college trying to get elected, there just seems to me as though there's something sinister about that. I wonder what it is all about and I doubt, I do doubt the intentions of those.

In my mind I keep on coming back to the USI pay increase it is sad to say that even in college when these politicians are pretty much the same age and supposed to be going through the same experience as me I find it hard to relate to them...

I think it's a bit unfair the way the current officers can run for their positions again. They are pretty much definite to get the position again due to the fact they're already there and people know them.

And before anyone makes assumptions, I have nothing against Fiach. He is a lovely guy and is doing a good job, I just think other students should be allowed a go at it too.

(And yes, this post is an assumption he is going to re-run based on hearsay).

@Labelled, I was with you until the second last paragraph. My reaction then was, 'Wait, what?'

That guy has inspired me so...

I Declan Meenagh hereby express my intent to run for ALL electable positions in Maynooth SU.
Vote Declan #1, smaller government is better government!
Only 1 man, taking care of business!

I can't wait to see if any of the candidates will try to bring in some form of electronic card with which you can print in all available places, purchase some things from the SU shops, get books out from the library, solve world hunger...

Now that would be an original campaign promise

This x ∞. I don't think the SU have had a fully functioning, regularly updated website the entire time I've been at college here (which is a long time >.>). I know there's all sorts of technical problems that had to be worked out (banquo posted about it a few times), but still. This really has to be the most important thing for the comms officer next year (along with making The Print even more awesome, and not changing it's format/name).

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll be long gone from NUIM by the time the SU gets a decent website :pac:

Are you assuming I'm going to turn into even more of a lifer?? :pac:

If elections are being called today, how long does that give for handing in nominations/canvassing etc?

It's normally ten days for both isn't it?

So election about the 28th/29th perhaps?

Hopes it's as, eh, interesting a campaign as last year :pac:

What are people meant to do when the current officer is re-running? They can hardly be expected to remain unbiased.

I'll be trying to get a Q&A session for these particular candidates at the candidates meeting, so unbiased and all out in the open!:)

Those particular candidates? i.e. more than one? How very interesting....

Heard of a few names this evening, some already mentioned on here.

Stop scouring for gossip, you!:D Those who are in office who DO decide to run, I meant:P

Love the amount of views this thread has already, hoping for a big massive HUUUU-UUUGE Election this year!:)

It'll be fairly big considering it's the first proper elections for the faculty reps. Expecting dirty tricks galore

Why do we need faculty reps? Are the class reps not enough?

That's great to hear :D I didn't mean to be snide about the current exec. Just it has turned up on manifestos for each of my three years in the college.

I always thought it would be a good idea to have elections run over two or three days, just to try and ensure as large a proportion of the student body go to vote.

I didn't vote myself last year because I was busy on the day of elections, and some people might not have lectures on that day so might not bother coming in.

Naoise announced at clubs & socs council that he is running for president.

It's oddly quiet on the rumour front. Have only heard of a few people running.

Definitely a smaller candidate number than last year, by the sound of things.

Going by what I heard yesterday, the :pac: in your post might not necessarily be warranted.

Although I'm not sure if I really believe the rumour myself.
