Up to 40 according to the BBC. A link in the OP would be awesome.

Bradford doesn't spring to mind for me, that was a horrendous accident involving innocent people, this is pretty much the exact opposite.

Its now up to 53 confirmed dead been rising steadily all day, shocking altogether.

Edit: As reported by Al Jazeera

jonawils: Al-Jazeera now saying 73 dead in Port Said. Also a stadium alight in Cairo, and rumours of three Ahly players being injured.

    Awful news :(

73, **** me. The thoughts of what it must've been like for those caught up in are horrendous.

I'd advise against people watching on Euronews, desperate stuff.

It's going to be a while before the death toll can be finalised, there's people fleeing into the tunnels etc. and I don't know if they're being followed by the perpetrators or not.

What the hell kicked it off? they won the game.

Horrific. Lads going to watch a game and never coming back :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,560 ✭✭✭✭Kess73

Nobody should go to a football game and not come back. Nobody.

That is just shocking news. Cannot believe how much my hands shook after opening the thread.

Sad day for the game, and a real tragedy for every family that gets a knock on their door tonight.

Should be very interesting to see what the reports are like about security. I've already read there wasn't as much security as usual and to my very untrained eye what is there doesn't seem too bothered about doing anything.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-16845841
The deaths occurred after supporters invaded the pitch following a match between top-tier clubs Masry and Ahly on Wednesday.

It is feared the death toll could rise as scores have been injured.

Some of the dead were security officers, the Associated Press quoted a morgue official as saying.

The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says it appears fans had taken knives into the stadium.

Our correspondent says the lack of the usual level of security in the stadium might have contributed to the clashes.

Police in Egypt have been keeping a much lower profile since last year's popular protests that ousted President Hosni Mubarak from power.
    Bitter rivalry

Television pictures have shown images of crowds descending into the stadium, chasing rical fans and players.

Some were cornered in the stadium, parts of which were set on fire.

Egyptian fans are notoriously violent, says our correspondent, particularly supporters of Ahly known as the Ultras.

They have been heavily implicated in the political confrontations recently, our correspondent adds.

Wednesday's violence broke out at the end of the match, which, unusually, the Port Said side Masry won 3-1.

As match ended, their fans flooded onto the pitch attacking Ahly players and fans.

Hopefully it won't spill out onto the streets.

Jesus. This looks like murders not a pitch invasion that led to a crush etc. Horrific. Not just a sad day for football a sad day for humanity.

    RIP

but there were a load of what can only be described as scumbags in that video. I was going to say animals but that would be an insult to the animal.

On Euronews I think they were showing someone getting stabbed in the face.

One of the teams is still there and refusing to leave. Hopefully the part of the stadium they're in is more flame retardant than other parts.

Fucking subhuman scum! What occurred wasn't a tragedy like hillsborough, but 73 (so far) murders. Murders at what was supposed to be a sporting event. I can't believe such a horrible thing has taken place :(

No man/woman/child should go to a football game and not return. It's a form of entertainment not a fúcking war.

    This is heartbreaking news.

Football has its rivalries but it should never go as far as bloodshed.

    RIP

You're right. I don't think animals are capable of premeditated mass murder like these scumbags. Simply appalling.

Unbearable news. Nothing like this has happened before. 73 murders. It's almost impossible to believe.

I can't help but think the Arab spring is somehow related to this, maybe a backlash to the movement.

RIP to all the dead. The amount of lifes devestated and families robbed of fathers and sons is too much to think about.

When you see what people are still capable within a mob is enough to make your blood run cold. So much for civilisation and evolution.

I am bereft of any emotion right now watching the news. I feel numb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,839 ✭✭✭Jelle1880

Seeing how many fans Al Ahly has, this will not end well for anyone connected to Masry imo.

I assume there was a lot more to this than a football rivalry.

As stupid as it sounds, Football is never really the case for "football" related violence. Seems to just be an outlet for other hatred.

Apparently it was down to the Al Alhy's newfound political views and acting as a group outside of the football world. Not a first time for football teams. The BBC commentator even mentioned a potential conspiracy theory as the police didnt turn up in proper numbers and then seemed to ditch the Al Alhy fans. Crazy stuff.

Pretty sure I seen the Al Alhy goal keeper take a beating in one of the videos/streams. By the looks of it he was stranded and surrounded by only rival fans... I assume he's in a bad way. Or I could be talking bollocks and didnt catch it properly.

Wow ,wouldn't you think security might have looked over such an ominous tweet,

Sicking and disgusting that people on mass would take part in this and do it to there fellow man.

I would reckon there will be a lot more to this than just a football but still Im sure there might of been Children , women in the stadium and its bloody disgraceful.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,720 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

It would make sense if Ahly are behind political disturbances that the police might not be so willing to put themselves in the line of fire protecting them.

Perhaps its best to conduct a Feyenoord-Ajax style arrangement for this game in future now..all away fans banned. Because no matter when the league starts and Ahly are at home to them...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭Havermeyer

I heard about this while I was in work, but was under the impression it was some sort of disaster rather than a riot.

    Crazy stuff.

    Totally sickening

R.I.P. to all the victims...football is supposed to be a game, and not the stage for (politically infused?) violence :(
