I' on holiday in Lithuania soon and deicded ot use the opportunity to save some money on an upcoming root canal that my local dentist tells me i will need soon. SHe told me it will cost €800 plus. Contacted a dentist in Vilnius and got quote for under €200 for same root canal with xray, anesthesia and xray and dental hygiene clean. saving will pay for my break. Anyway question is - how straight forward is root canal treatment and anyione have any expereinces of getting dental work in Lithuania?
    thanks.

Its not the same, Your dentist hear quoated for a specialist to do the root canal (if not then they are charging specialist prices). This will not be of the same standard as a 200 euro root canal done in a rush while you on holidays. It may be a root canal on the same tooth, but my experiance on molar root canals done in a hurry for little money is they are of generally poor quality that can lead to further problems and often tooth loss. There are plenty of threads about the pros and cons of travelling for medical and dental procedures, use the search function. You only get one chance to do it correctly.

Here is a case of a bad root canal versus a good one, its easy spot on X-ray but you wont have a clue yourself. The bad ones take a few years to falre back up. Now these are front teeth, its 10 time harder do a back molar with 3-5 canals.

I had alot of work done over there. 2 of my teeth never fell out so had implants and all the associtaed works done in Vilnius over the space of a year or so. The work cost me about 2k was getting quoted over 8k in Dublin. Even with flights and hotels it still saved a fortune

Thanks for the reply Neris. Were you happy with the quality of the work. I've searched a number of threads here and each one seems to be closed by moderators who appear to be dentists. Surely not all dentists overseas are butchers! Anyway let me know if you were happy with the work. The clinic I'm looking at is very modern and has good reciews elsewhere.

Infact there are several thread with reccomendations, the treatment waspoor but the posters seemed happy. Search around. If its reassurance that its the best thing to do you wont find it, but maybe that's because its not.

I am currently undergoing a molar root canal - in Dublin.
Its not straightforward. I had stage 1 done by my own dentist, then was referred to a specialist because my roots were very curved and my dentist couldnt be sure that she was getting all of it cleared out, that was a 1 hour appointment. 1 week later the specialist worked on me for 2 hours and at the end explained that Ive to come back again for another hour+ as she still isnt finished. So thats 3 weeks in a row, a 1 hour appointment, a 2 hour appointment and now a 1 hour+ appointment. Believe me - I feel like its the never ending root canal.

The original dentist charged me 150, the specialist is charging 875 (it wouldnt matter if that was over one or two appointments, the charge is for the root canal, not the hours).

I can tell you something for nothing and Ive no vested interests here, Im not a dentist, Im just an ordinary citizen who needed a root canal - I would not like to be in a foreign country getting this done, its very time consuming, incredibly uncomfortable and Ive felt ill for more than 24 hours after each appointment (that may be just me). I particularly wouldnt like to fly after a root canal as my sinuses were killing me after each appointment for a couple of days.

If your doc told you you needed a small operation would you jump on a flight to a cheap country? I doubt it.

Thanks fitzgeme for the comments. very nervous visitor to dentsist anyway at best of time - not looking forward to it at home or abroad. Username123 - I suppore every experience is different. THey already told me that once they xray and have a look they will not proceed ith root canal if not possible to do ina a day. I will be gettign clean and whitening anyway when there.

Yeah, no doubt. Mine is a molar, presumably a front tooth would have less work involved. Plus my curvy roots may be particular to me!

Id be wary of this. My own dentist told me that an x-ray is not enough to tell you if you need a specialist for a root canal. She x-rayed me and said it 'looked' straightforward but that until she got inside the tooth there would be no way of telling if there was complication.

I just think you would be mad to risk your tooth on a 'cheap' root canal. Good luck to you, its not a nice procedure (no matter where it is done!).

That is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard (from them not you). What if they start doing it and then find out it need a few visits a few weeks apart half way through (that when you find out, and X-ray tell you nothing about this). Will they a: tell you, pay for new flights and accommodation and complete the job properly or b: not tell you and fill it anyway leaving you with bugs down the canal that will kick off in a few years time.

The tooth will need a filling after also, the whitening will prevent this from setting properly, this again is an unsound rushed treatment plan. Please let common sense prevail. A bad job is far worse than no job at all. Best of luck

Ive had dental work in lithuania and found them excellent. 3 crowns and numerous fillings. I also spent the 800 for a root canal in Ireland, and after a number of years it failed. Why not just get crown in lith and be done with trouble from the tooth. At the time the lith dentist was suprised why irish dentists still used silver filling.
