    Hi,

Can anyone advise which would be better for someone who has previous problems with their back, Rack Pulls or Deadlifts.
No disc issues but many years of back strain pulled muscles etc and don't want to risk the person doing further harm.
Their will also be flexibility issues to work round initially.
Would they be better of using a Hex bar instead to limit forward bend ?

    1) Fix whatever problem causing back issue
    2) pull whichever way is most comfortable (once it's not above the knees rack pull)
    3) TBDL =/= DL replacement

Do the one you can do with proper form (no arching of lower back at any point) and no pain. Start to improve flexibility of your calfs, hamstings, hips and your core muscle strength

Okay, so thats a no on the trap bar.
The Rack pulls will be starting below the knee, I was going to choose the starting height based on flexibility and form.
I will of course look to improve his flexibility over time, just to need to make sure he's able to lift correctly.
