    Form guide

Recent wins at Manchester City and Arsenal were undoubtedly big results for Sir Alex’s men, but the bigger picture reveals the Reds have actually lost three of the last six fixtures. As such, Stoke come into this game boasting better form, with Tony Pulis’ men having tasted defeat just once in all competitions since Christmas. Still, that’s unlikely to fill Stoke fans with too much confidence. After all, Stoke have never beaten United in the Premier League era, home or away, and have scored just once on their last seven visits to Old Trafford.

    Ins and outs

Anderson and Ashley Young are due back in full training this week but this game will probably come too soon for both players. There’s no suggestion Wayne Rooney, Nani or Phil Jones will make it, either, after all three missed United’s defeat at Anfield on Saturday. Rio Ferdinand watched that game from the substitutes’ bench, which suggests he’s close to a return. But while United could almost name an injured XI (we’ve not even mentioned long-term absentees Nemanja Vidic, Michael Owen, Darren Fletcher or Tom Cleverley), Stoke City are sweating only on the fitness of Matthew Etherington, who limped off against Derby County at the weekend with a groin problem.

    Last meeting

September’s league game at the Britannia finished 1-1 after Peter Crouch’s second-half header cancelled out Nani’s 27th-minute opener. The game was also notable for an early injury to Javier Hernandez, which forced the Mexican from the pitch inside 10 minutes, and a strong performance from Reds goalkeeper David De Gea, who stood up impeccably to Stoke’s aerial bombardment and made two or three top-class saves.

    Opposition boss

Tony Pulis doesn’t seek attention or controversy, although that’s not to say he hasn’t made an impact at the Britannia. This is his second spell at Stoke, a tenure that began with winning promotion to the top flight in 2006/07. Five years later, the Potters are now a mid-table fixture in the Premier League and, like United, will compete in the Europa League’s Round of 32 next month. For all his success, Pulis has his fair share of detractors. He’s assembled a team of big, strong players and encouraged them to play to their physical strengths, an approach that isn't always easy on the eye. Few can argue it's not been effective, though.

    Star man

Stoke’s biggest threat – in more ways than one; he’s 6ft 7in – is undoubtedly Peter Crouch. He thrives on Stoke’s direct approach and can be a real handful for defenders. And while he’s obviously good in the air, Crouch can also make things happen with the ball at his feet. Under-estimate him at your peril.

    Quote/unquote

“United may have injury problems, but they’ve got incredible strength in depth. That’s why they’re the current champions and I’m sure that whatever side Sir Alex sends out it will still be one full of outstanding quality.” – Tony Pulis

    Sub-plots

All eyes will be on Sir Alex’s team selection on Tuesday night, with a specific interest in his choice of goalkeeper. David De Gea was terrific against Stoke back in September, but Anders Lindegaard has seen considerably more action in recent weeks and has looked a consistently safe option.

    Referee

Mike Jones has taken charge of the Reds three times already this season: at home against Newcastle United and away at West Bromwich Albion and Leeds (Carling Cup). It was the Magpies’ visit to Old Trafford that will stick in the memory of United fans, as Jones, after consulting his assistant, pointed to the spot to award Newcastle a penalty when Rio Ferdinand had clearly won the ball. Even Newcastle boss Alan Pardew agreed it was contentious. “If it was against me I would have been very aggrieved.”

    Rivals watch

While United and Stoke lock horns at Old Trafford, Manchester City and Everton will do battle at Goodison Park. Sir Alex’s men currently lie three points behind City.

    Predicted Line Up.
    De Gea
    Rafael Smalling Evans Evra
    Valencia Carrick Giggs Park
    Berbatov Hernandez

Might see the likes of Pogba starting considering our injuries, but unlikely.

Can't see Welbeck dropped for this one, think Fergie will go all out in attack to get the cup game out of the system. Confidant enough about this one. I will go for a 3-0 home win.

Hopefully Hernandez plays. He has done well against Stoke, 3 goals against them last year.

Which raises the question, will he ever get a game?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

Well if there was ever a time for him to start it's tonight against a team that's generally shíte away from home, especially considering 2 of our known to be fit 3 midfielders are 36 & 38 and both started a game only 4 days ago.

But it still won't happen. We'll probably see Park in MF and Fabio on the wing or some crap like that.

4-0/5-1 hopefully. The only thing I ask from the 'big' sides in the EPL is to hammer Stoke and neither Man Yoo or Liverpool have this season.:(

    Lindegaard

    Jones--Ferdinand-Vidic--Fabio

    Nani---Anderson--Cleverley--Young

    Rooney--Owen

On the bench: De Gea, Fletcher.

The team of players United don't have available tonight, through injury. WTF!?

    Amos

    Rafael--Smalling--Evans--Evra

    Valencia-Carrick-Scholes-Park

    ----Berbatov-Welbeck.

Hernandez, Pogba, Keane, Kuszczak, Fryers, Giggs, Wooton.

    The possible team...

Going to be a very, very tough night for United.

Stoke have actually picked up 14 of their 30 points in away games, so the idea that they're crap away from home doesn't really hold water.

Their record at Old Trafford is not good but with United severely depleted by injuries tonight is a good opportunity for them to get a result.

I'd go 2-1 United. Think this will be a tricky one. Scholes should start.

lol @ the cricket scores. I'll take a win of any sorts tonight. Given our injuries at the moment, I'll take 1-0.

I won't even venture a prediction on this one given I have no idea what 11 are going to there. United badly need to win it though.

    Prediction: Berbagoal

I'd also like to see somebody elese at LB.

    Fabio, Evans or Fryers.

Not any time I've seen them. One of the lowest goals tally away from home I think.

I still have Stoke v Villa after Christmas imprinted in my head.:(

With the amount of injuries to experienced players in defence we need Evra there imo

Why? He was MOM vs Arsenal. His game was unsettled by that mindless horrible lot on Sunday.

    Amos
    Rafael
    Smalling
    Evans
    Evra
    Valencia
    Carrick
    Pogba
    Welbeck
    Berbatov---Hernandez

    That's what I'll predict.

Pogba to start. Wouldn't this be his first ever start for United in the league?

Would be his league debut. Not that confident of it but I just have a feeling.

I would love to see Pogba start. I'd even be happy for him to get 30-40 minutes at the end. He looks like he could become a bit of a beast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,369 ✭✭✭UnitedIrishman

As much as I'd like Pogba to start getting games, you can't throw a kid like him in against the likes of Whelan and Delap in a two man midfield. He's still only 18 and it's a huge step up even if it is 'only Stoke'.

Daycent team. Think we'll struggle and win 1-0 with a few scares. Thank god it's 8 o clock kick off, don't have to miss EastEnders :)

If we're chasing the game do you think Fergie will bring on Giggs or Pogba? It won't be both!!

If we're reasonably comfortable and Fergie wants some fresh legs will he bring on Pogba or Giggs? Can't see him bring on Pogba to protect a lead.

The only way we'll be seeing Pogba is if we're 4-0 up or if we're still losing at 85 minutes imo.

You would have to think that Stoke would fancy themselves to get a result against that United team.

Unless we are comfortable (and maybe not even then) the only way Pogba is getting on, imo, is injury in the midfield.

Our local thought Sky were showing the United game so they were gonna show Liverpool on one of the foreign channels. When they realised their predicament, they ran a competition on Facebook to vote on who to show. With two minutes left at 7:13 pm, Liverpool were winning 71 - 73. At 7:15, United were 78-75 winners!

Even the winning mentality is in the United fans blood! :P
