Hi, I have been going to the gym for the last year in an effort to lose weight and maintain muscle and I have recently been thinking about taking a protein supplement to help, I have never used one before and I was thinking of using the USN Pure Protein IGF - 1 supplement. Can anyone advise if this is the best one as I wish to lose weight (roughly 7-10 pounds) and maintain muscle, any advice would be greatly appreciated.....

Read the comments in this thread and also the stickeys at the top of the health and fitness form. The thing you need to understand about shakes is that although they are more convenient than food they are not better than food.

If you still want to take some shakes fair enough but what you'll buy in the shops in Ireland is very over priced. Take a look at bulkpowders.co.uk etc.

Myprotein are good as well although their prices have gone up a bit. Still way cheaper than shops.

Kinetica is pretty decent, however I personally find that it doesn't mix as well as some other powders. It is a, relatively, high quality powder with 76.6% protein and it's a decent price. I've just done the math for the USN you mentioned and it's about 71%.

I'm just finishing off a tub of the vanilla Kinetica and I'm looking to see what other proteins are there for me. I think I'm going to buy Optimum Nutrition next time, it's got 80% protein which is pretty much the minimum you should be looking for in a good quality powder. It is slightly more expensive than Kinetica but it has more flavours to choose from. That being said I've never used it so I'm not sure which flavour is good or how it mixes.

I buy all my proteins from discount supplements (http://www.discountsupplements.ie/) they have a few shops about the place and their prices aren't ridiculous. Myprotein is good, but limited and you have to wait for delivery from the UK.

What you need to remember is that it's just a supplement. You said you're looking to lean down and maintain muscle so you should be looking to take 1g-1.5g of protein per lb of body weight and if you can get it from your food then it's not necessary to use protein powder. The only time it has a real advantage over food is directly after the gym when the powder can get into your system faster than food (due to your body sending blood to the parts of the body you've worked out and hence taking from the stomachs disgestive ability I've been informed).

Hope this helps, I'm not an expert but I've been asking similar questions to people who are and this is pretty much what I've learned from them.

Mixes really well. Cookies and cream is lovely.

It's one extra day compared to discount supplements and MyProtein's range is huge.

My mistake, I was meant to say the other way round! Discount supplements has a limited range compared to myprotein. Not sure where the OP is from but there is an advantage to being able to walk in to the store and pick up the protein too. Haggle like crazy and see if you can get some free stuff thrown in, which unfortunatley you can't do online.

One thing I really want to get from myprotein is one of the shakers with the shaker ball in it. Haven't seen any around Dublin and I find them way better for mixing that the normal shakers.

Cheers Stench Blossoms, I was thinking chocolate mint. Normal chocolate flavour stuff and anything that's too sweet makes me feel sick after hard training so I thought that mix might be alright. Bored with vanilla!

Excellent choice!! I've tried many of the flavours for protein and choc mint is easily my favourite.

So far as brand, I always go with gold standard whey.

I just bought some chocolate mint as well. Reminds me of eating an aero.

I'm thinking of taking on protein as well, rather then starting a new topic I'm just curious to know of the side effects. I heard that Creatine may shrink penis ? (Not confirmed, does anyone know? ) just wondering of the main side effects of protein powder?

sorry but creatine won't shrink your winky lol

Creatine is in beef. The white powder you get in bags is just a powder version.

Anyway if you want to supplement with protein, try MyProtein Impact Whey. Good quality product and if you use the MP code in my signature, you get 5% off first order.

Cheers for the reply! I laughed to when I heard it, but just wan't to confirm. There was a protein one I was thinking of getting in Westpoint gym. High in Carbs and Protein, take 1 scoop 2 times a day. Should roughly last me for 22 days.€50 with free Creatine powder worth €20. What you reckon of that? I'm looking to build muscle and weight, looking to put on 2-3.

I have one that I used once and wasn't mad about. You can have it if you like?

You'll find the cheaper powders dont mix very well. Your better off paying a bit more for the better powders.

I use Gold Standard 100% Whey and its excellent. Mixes very well and doesnt feel like a lump in your stomach like some of the others. You should be taking it 2 hours before your work out and immediately after.

Sorry but that's nonsense. Price doesn't equal quality.
