How exactly can I become a train driver?

    What's the salary?

    Are there any perks?

I am 20 going on 21, am I too late to join IR?

Is there any disadvantages of the job at all?

If I get a job, is there a good chance I can be stationed in Dublin where I live?

My friend told me it's a closed shop, and no hope of getting in unless you have a very, very, very good friend working there, or a family member, is this true??

Any info is appreciated, especially from IR workers or even northern rail workers, or any other companies, especially drivers...
    Cheers folks.

My friend is a train driver for IR. It is true, its very hard to get a job with IR unless you have family member working there already. He started of a ticket office and move his way up, its all shift work. When the positions of train drivers was announced he applied along with about hundred other staff. He had to do numermous test, three interviews and take a medical. They were only looking for 6 drivers at the time so it was a long and tough process. Once he got the position he had to training for 6mths had to build a certrain amount of hours before he could drive the train alone. He was marked on everything when driving the train under the watchful eye of a instructor. He passed it all and now he loves it. They also test the drivers at random for alochol and drugs in there system.

Previous thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=58403977 but I don't think driving trains has a long term future in Ireland.
