Examples are being made out of racist match goers a lot lately and rightly so... It helps that the clubs are getting fined and the reputation is hurting the bottom line.

I was just reading the daily mail and the have a picture of a man in the stand who appears to be making monkey chants and motions at Evra at the pool match, under the headline Liverpool are looking to identify this man!

I can't link it on the mobile but I would love to see his reaction when he sees the paper in the morning.

Also a few chelsea fans on the train from the QPR match were making racist remarks about anton ferdinand and somebody reported them... Lifetime ban and possible charges.

    Behave yourselves!

Merseyside Police last night arrested a 59-year-old man from north Wales after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Manchester United was marred by alleged racial abuse.

The arrest followed widespread outrage after the publication on the internet of a picture which appeared to show a Liverpool fan making a 'monkey’ gesture during yesterday’s FA Cup tie.

The game was the first between United and Liverpool since an FA inquiry found Luis Suárez guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra, and the Anfield crowd booed the French full-back every time he touched the ball.

A police statement released late last night read: “The man has been taken to a police station, and will be questioned by officers. Merseyside Police would like to thank North Wales police and Liverpool Football Club for their assistance with this matter.”

The police had earlier said the incident was under investigation by specialist 'hate crimes’ detectives.

Liverpool, who will ban any fan found guilty of racial abuse at Anfield, had earlier said they were working closely with police to identify the man in the photograph.

A Liverpool statement read: “Following today’s game we were made aware of an image being circulated on social media relating to an incident at this afternoon’s FA Cup tie. We are now working closely with Merseyside Police to establish the facts of what occurred and identify the individual involved.”

At the game itself, Merseyside police reported that there had been two arrests (one inside and one outside the ground) and 17 ejections, all for low level disorder offences.

In his programme notes, Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish wrote that “it was important to us that the atmosphere is not tarnished in any way” but felt the booing of Evra did not cross the line.

“Why would I be disappointed for Patrice Evra?” Dalglish asked angrily. “Have you ever played football?I’ve been booed.”

“The media played its part in going through the process in the week in trying to maintain dignity and respect on the football pitch and concentrate on the football and that’s what the players did and that’s what the fans did. The fans are entitled to support their teams. A bit of banter between two teams is brilliant.”

Jesus, Dalglish is one classy man.

This lad just had a target painted on his back. If he is seriously injured the daily mail should be sued for millions imo. A fan being an ignorant prat should not result in him being sensationalised as a hate figure.

Yeah much better to keep racists anonymous. Are you actually taking the piss? If anything happens the lad it will be his own doing for acting in such a disgusting prejudiced fashion, not a newspaper's fault for posting the truth.

Well done to the English FA for being so progressive on this matter. Racism is disgusting and has to be stamped out of the game.

Unfortunately I worry when Sepp Blatter has his head in the sand on this issue, so too do the Spanish FA and several Eastern European FA's. Off the top of my head Peter Odemwingies old club had a thank you banner at a game against an English side in the Europa league, they were thanking England for taking a black player off their hands.

Lifetime bans for fans and severe fines and lengthy bans for players is the only way to go.

No. He should be identified and charged.

A rag of a newspaper should never put someones life in danger. Make no mistake, the wrong group of lads recogonise him on the street and he will get a savage beating. He doesn't deserve that because he is too ignorant to know any better not to make monkey chants.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭shangri la

The daily mail didn't do this to disuade people from doing this in future.

As a liverpool supporter I would be disgusted with them if they released the photo to the mail to try to promote their anti racist policy.

Call a spade a spade, he is a racist. By your logic, no1s crimes should ever be posted in the news, because the same would happen to people who commit most crimes.

    lad, seriously?

a murderer or a paedophile should be on the front page for all to see.

to pick one lad out of the hundreds of racists at the football and put his picture in the paper so yobs can find him and seriously hurt him is something much different. It incites violence and hate which is what they are trying to stamp out in football.

if you can't see the difference i'm not going to spend any more time trying to explain it to you.

I did not mention paedophiles or murderers, there are much less extreme crimes out there that would be far more comparable, wouldn't suit your argument though.

To suggest that the papers are posting this to get the lad beaten is ridiculous. If this does happen as a result of his actions, I don't condone it. Not at all. But it will be because of his actions, not those of the press. It is much preferable to live in countries where the media are able to tell the truth. The lad was caught doing something absolutely disgusting, and that is not something that should be hid in a civilised country with free media.

As for you not wishing to discuss the matter any further, this is preferable, very appealing to me as you were not talking much sense anyway.

So progressive that they cancelled the pre-game handshake between QPR and Chelsea?

    Did they ?
I watched it and the ITV cameras could not stop showing the man from South America(I cannot spell his name on the phone) in the stands, cutting to hom everytime something happened to see his reaction.

seriously, papers have a responsibility on what they report. Accused murderers/paedophiles have some protection at least until they are convicted of their crimes, and even after it they are allowed a degree of anonymity by covering their faces when entering/leaving court (whether you agree with it or not). I'm not standing up for this lad but we don't know what his circumstances are. He may be the leader of the local KKK but he also may be a lad who is not the full shilling and had his head in the wrong place either by being egged on by some wiseasses or having something on-board. Certainly is irresponsible to be branded in this way IMO.

In fairness to the guy doing the monkey gestures, he was doing it in private, not for an audience of 50,000 and a worldwide tv audience! Show the racists for what they are.

There were plenty of other chants and gestures from one end of the ground that the papers seem happy to ignore.

The usual songs about Hillsborough and those that died there, plus one really classy woman who was probably in her 50's or so who kept putting what looked like the plastic that six packs are attached with over her face and screaming "I'm being crushed, I'm being crushed" at Liverpool supporters

That kind of sh*t was reported yesterday to the stewards and police but I don't see the papers running with that.

It's disgusting behaviour. Man u fans coming to anfield are gettin worse and worse In their behaviour. A good kick up the arse they need, ban all man u fans from the next game at anfield and the same for Liverpool fans chanting about Munich at old Trafford.

Dalglish is an absolute idiot for the comments he made about Evra. Honestly does he not have any sense of what's right and what's wrong to say? It's a ridiculous comment to make.

He is in a difficult position. How can he criticise his own fans? If he is to criticise his own fans for booing Evra, then he must also criticise Utd fans for the Hillsboro, Heysel and Sun chants they sung all during the game. Then the **** really kicks off.

Well it sure as hell should be news worthy. They should be barfred from grounds if caught, just as the minority of Liverpool supporters who do the Munich chants should get named, shamed, and barred from grounds imho.

Agreed. But are the Police seriously going to arrest a few hundred/thousand people after every game or the clubs ban hundreds/thousands of fans? Because when I was in OT at a game against Liverpool there was much more than a minority at that craic from both sides.

The 1-1 game? I was back home for that and saw no sign of a blanket ban on United fans in terms of the memorial. The only thing I can think of is maybe something else happened just before you tried to pass that way and people were being diverted as a result.
