i play a bit of online poker. i use the same name as i do here, chuky_r_law. ive been playing the same site for about 6 or 7 years (poker stars). about a week ago i received a letter from them informing me that i would not have access to my account as my online poker name was deemed 'too offensive' and until such time as i change it i will not be able to play poker on their site.

i have tried to argue my case but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears at poker stars. should i go along with them and change my name or should i say feck them and cash out?

What's your case, what did you argue? I can see where they are coming from.

I would say "Fair enough, my name is a different spelling of an IRA slogan, which would be offensive to quite a few people."

why would you want a user name like that other than to offend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,399 ✭✭✭✭r3nu4l

Yeah well in fairness, I'm sure you don't know this but the phonetics of your username actually make it sound similar to a popular slogan used by the republcan movement in Northern Ireland, particularly a proscribed organisation describing itself as Óglaigh na hÉireann or the Provisional Irish Republican Army!

I'm sure that's a complete coincidence but even so it's that fact that's probably caused the issue. Change your name to God Save the Queen! Sorted...

i saw it on the back of toilet door once...thats where it came from! for some reason i ended up using it for the poker site (and here too)

anyway, ive had a few emails back and forth with pokers stars. they kept saying to me that under paragraph 7 of their terms and conditions that they were at liberty to freeze my account

    7. OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE OR CONTENT
The User is prohibited from posting any unlawful, obscene, libelous, defamatory, threatening, or other material that would violate any law or generally be considered to be offensive, via the Service using the chat option, the player images option or in correspondence with PokerStars' staff.
When using the chat option offered to Users via the Service, Users are prohibited from making any statements which promote any service or product of any party except PokerStars. Further, Users shall not make statements about PokerStars or the Service that are untrue or would reasonably be considered to be derogatory or critical.

my point was that i felt there was nothing here in this paragraph that would allow them to ban me for my choice of name. i pushed them a bit on it, to point out exactly where it is stated but they just got back to me saying their decision is final

I work in this industry. Names aren't monitored on sign up, action against offensive names are only taken after someone complained. So someone seen your name and complained and as you agreed to t&c's when you signed up they can do what they want. You can debate the offensiveness of the name(but i wouldn't) but for someone sitting in an office in London the easiest thing to do is to change the name on the off chance its in any way offensive.

Alot of poker players would see the change of a name as an advantage as players are not permitted to change names.

but they could not point out where in the t&c's that it mentions users names. there just seemed to be an attitude that its their site and they can do what they want (which, although annoying, it is, i suppose)

thats the problem. it is the best site! just being stubborn about it. just one of those things where you know it was just one person complaining and next thing im banned. if we listened to all the uber sensitive people out there we'd never get anywhere

End game is you're gonna lose the argument, as it's their site. Argue the odds won't matter, been there, done that on a different site with a different issue.

If you want to stay on the site, ask to change your name to something else.

    Dear Mr Poker King

    Re Offensive Handle

After some reflective thought and consultation with my boardsies I have come round to the conclusion you are indeed correct, and that my handle on the site could indeed be seen as offensive

I am deeply sorry for any offence caused to both Poker King and any of the Poker King Members

I hereby authorize Poker King to change my name to B1G_P3N15_4U

    Regards

    B1G_P3N15_4U

Just drop the r from your username, Chucky Law doesn't sound too bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,754 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

    Let me understand...

Your username represents and promotes your support for an illegal terrorist group who murder people.... People on the site may have had family members and friends murdered by the group you are promoting... Yet you don't understand how it could be construed as offensive?

On the otherhand you claim it is not a sign of support for a terrorist organization, it's just something you read on a public bathroom door... 1. What were you looking for on the door of a public jax. 2. Are you really trying to claim that you use an IRA slogan as a username, because it looked good in a public jax? 3. Did you have to go to special classes in school?

In fairness, this is a bit of a non-question. In an attempt to be all funny and clever you've offended someone. You've got no defence whatsoever. The poker site's told you to change your name and get on with it.

Cash out or change your user name. No one else gives a f@ck either way.
