Iceland have been mooted for ages havent they?

Dont know where but its good news, i know people will say its not local it will bring jobs and once its open it can only bring prices down in general the more retail options the better.

Well this is the unit they were originally rumored to be going into, however according to daft.ie that unit was still available up to yesterday morning.

Not allot of parking beside Buy Lo would be my first thought but not allot of options I can think of outside of there. The Iceland in Carrick is far from huge so I don't think they need a big Unit. Be nice to see someone challenge Aldi/Lidl.

I'm sure you mean Clonmel rather than Carrick ;-)

Eactly. Very good documentary called The high cost of low prices that would actually scare you. I wouldn't want them anywhere near Waterford.

No it's not all frozen food and they don't need big floor space but from memory they weren't really much different in price from other supermarkets just more choice in frozen stuff though their special offers were good.

was in the clonmel store last night good choice of family meals there,s small choice of cereals, crisps, cold meats, veg but yeah mainly all frozen goods what bugs me is!!! all products have pound pricing on em and the euro prices are rounded up i.e. something for £2 is rounded off to say €3.50 which it does,nt

There's nothing confirmed about Iceland coming to Waterford. They're looking into units here, but nothing's been confirmed at all.

Wouldnt be the pound pricing that bugs me, some people fail to realise that its not always the cheaper the food the better. The truth of it is, is the cheaper the food the worse it is for you!

I wouldnt touch any of that animal feed, i wouldnt feed it to animals, its pumped full or god knows.

Then again thats why we have the freedom to choose what we want to eat!

    Bon appetite!

I was in the store in Clonmel once, and bought a good bit of stuff. Most of it is really good quality, but some of the cheaper pizzas wouldn't exactly be nice (still nicer than the Tesco own-brand ones though.).

They do sell a small bit of fruit and vegetables, not as much as another large grocery chain (but Iceland is a lot smaller than your regular Tesco or Dunnes too.). They sell fresh meat too, but it's mainly all frozen food.

The prices on all the products are in pounds (ie: £1 on some or 3 for £7 written on the boxes of others) but the prices aren't accurately converted to euros, but I'm sure that's to include the costs of the extra transport and higher taxes, etc.

Would definitely recommend anyone to take a visit to the shop, but don't expect to do a full week's shopping there, just pop in for some good quality cheap frozen food and a few other bits and pieces.

Frozen food has less preservatives and crap than refrigerated food.

Of course you can't been fresh vegetables.

planning notice in the window down there today beside buylo. change of use of unit 2(the empty one) from warehouse to discount retail store.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

I still can't believe they picked that unit. Parking is going to be a nightmare when it opens first.

It's true, you will just have to wait and see. They have already been in fitting lifts and the keys were handed over Monday just gone

The one thing you are all forgetting is it will be run as a franchise with prices controlled by Iceland Ireland and not Iceland UK.

Just like tesco Ireland does not compare price wise to tesco UK.

They will just compare to the rest. Just like garveys and tesco with prices compared to each other.

We'll see. Personally Iceland is ****e in the UK.

Iceland in Clonmel has regular pricing in terms of exchange, ie: items priced at £1 are sold at €1.50 which is fair considering the extra transport costs and all!

I still don't think they are picking a good unit. I know they have teams of guys who know better then me who examine these kind of things but i just can't see it working as well as it could have.

I know Dealz are going into Lisduggan so that's not an option now but that is a far better location IMHO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,099 ✭✭✭spankmemunkey

Your talking about frozen vegetables, theres nothing wrong with frozen vegetables in fact i would say frozen is better than fresh, fresh from supermarkets anyway, frozen veg is picked and frozen within one hour, where as your "Fresh Veg" in the shop has probably been half way round the world in a ship or on a truck then time sepnt on the shelf.

Im talking about the Sheppards pie's the lasagne the ready made meals, frozen sausages. People think the cheaper the food the better, the cheaper the food the more crap thats in it, the less quality in it. just read the back of the packs,

I seen that episode of south park!

Penn and Teller did a rebuttal documentary about Walmart that could easily be transferred to Waterford.Worth a watch. It was called Wallmart Hate

Isn't there a lot of parking to the rear of that unit ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,997 ✭✭✭Adyx

Do we really need another supermarket though? Even one that's a little more "specialised" than the others. Obviously the jobs being created is great but there's a Superquinn, Aldi, Lidl, BuyLo right there, 2 Tescos not that far, there's that party frozen food place nearby too. Hell if you're really stuck there's a Centra and a Spar too. And all that's before you drive from that general area.

Obviously it means more choice but I can't see there being enough business to take anything from the other shops.

Dealz are no longer going into lisduggan, an objection was put it, when up through the chain and objection was held fair, dealz pulled out all units are up for sale in tescos lisduggan

Trust me, they are going in there. I still don't know why they put those signs up.

Let's just say i'm on the front line, I cant go into full details but i can guarentee you they are going to be in Lisduggan within the coming weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 594 ✭✭✭sonyvision

Well in fairness I hope they do, few jobs for people would be nice in fairness, and that shopping centre needs a massive boast......

Are you working there ya ?
Oh and them objections were put in when they knew dealz were about to move in, bad form by the competition infairness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,081 ✭✭✭ziedth

I'm involved alright (I know being so cryptic is annoying but its a necessary evil).

I guess that's just business with the objections. I mentioned in the general chat thread but all those empty units along that side of Lisduggan are going to be in use by the summer which is great.

Great to see any few jobs created in the city.

Just out in Lisduggan now and there are to let signs all over the place dealz was supposed to be going in.

    Are they new signs?
