I know, its not nice to talk about, but I have only started to jog/run the past 2 weeks and have also changed my diet a bit too, but since then I have noticed, a lot of gas, after I do a run in the evening. Seems to go on all night and still happening in the morning, even now, in work, not like painful cramps, just bigs farts (lol :o:().
Anyone else get this after going for a run? And how the hell do I get it to stop.

    Thanks

I had this same problem when I changed my diet, took me a while to find out what was causing it, but eventually I found out grains were responsible, particularly oats. Once I stopped eating porridge I felt so much better(and smelt better !)

You said you changed your diet, what did you change ? Seems to happen after you do a run in the evening, what would you have to eat before your run ?

    Thank you for the reply!!!!

Still 'farting' today. I do a run every second evening before food, doing my run tonight. So its not going away after an evening or the next day :-(

Yeah my diet has changed. I'll give you an run down of what I am eating each day now.

Breakfast - nothing, but changed that yesterday to egg, wholemeal bread and spinach and juice now, so thats not causing it(yet) but it is lovely.

Morning break - Banana and a cup of coffee, and a kit kat also.

Lunch - Try to get brown roll in shop but most times they are gone so white bread roll with mayo, meat or egg with cheese and red onion. Packet of crisps in there too, I know.

Afternoon break - Banana and a coffee

Dinner - Salmon or quiche or liver with carrots and parsnips.

Might have a bit of greek yogurt with berries after that too.

I dont think its too bad of a new diet, make sure I dont eat my dinner after 8pm, really just cut out potatoes and chocolate. Stopped smoking too but wouldn't think that causes it.

So its probably something you are eating from breakfast to afternoon break. Should be able to find it by a process of elimination.

If I was you, I would start with not eating wholemeal bread, brown/white roll, wheat or any grains. Seems to be a very common intolerance. Even if you think its something else, give this a go for two days. From my own experience, I'd have porridge in the morning and would still be feeling dodgy later that night.

If that fails, I'd go with cutting out dairy, so no eggs/yoghurt/milk(in your coffee).

You aren't on a high fibre diet or taking a supplement like brewers yeast am guessing ? They could be another cause.

Coffee can get the bowels moving, but it wouldn't last as long as your symptoms. I'd recommend keeping a detailed list of everything you eat if none of the above work.

This might be worth a read to find out other possible causes

Not to be a broken record, but give the cutting out of grains a good shot. I'd notice that when I'd go to the toilet after eating grains, that it would not be the healthiest looking bowel movement(sorry bit graphic), but was an indication that something was amiss for me.

Best of luck finding the cause, am sure you will in the end. If you never had these problems before then its definitely possible to get it sorted :)

Completely agree with ASJ on this. It may be grains which are causing the gas. Before I stopped eating grains, I had gas all the time. Personally, I thought everyone just dealt with gas or maybe it was a result of eating my food too quickly. However, I cut out grains in November and haven't had a problem with gas since. Give it a try for a couple of days and see what happens.

    Thanks for that!!!

Went for my run, and back about 2 hours, gas is not as bad as two days ago, so, I dont know.
I did think yesterday could it have anything to do with me breathing extremely heavily when running, like swallowing air? Guess I will find out tomorrow.

Oh the grains and bread. I know I really should cut bread out, but I am like a lot of people and feel like I will hit a brick wall for lunches. Would wraps be ok?

Thanks for your very informative replies guys!!!

I've never heard of running causing problems like that before.

but I am like a lot of people and feel like I will hit a brick wall for lunches. Would wraps be ok?
Am not 100% sure on this, but I think wraps will contain some sort of grain in it. Kinda hard to find out ingredients involved in the making of wraps. I'd peruse other topics here about what people are eating for healthy lunches, will help a lot. I like to have nuts, seeds, fruit, veg myself.

I'd search for topics here on "IBS" or "Irritable bowel syndrome", may help you find any other causes for your problem. I've read that drinking lot of water helps too, and probiotic yoghurts. Try eat gluten-free too and foods that are not too processed when possible.

Wraps are pretty much the same as bread, made with corn flour. Not really better option tbh. I agree with cutting out grains. I've done it and I haven't had nearly as much gas as I had previously

I'm farting like a complete b_astard all day. I'm going to blame it on the new protein shake I switched to

No, just started eating spinach in the morning about 3 days ago, small amount really.

Have to say, I am not farting(god I hate typing that on here :o) half as much or even at all today after my run last night.

I am thinking it was just something I had eatin on tuesday that caused it or that I swollowed a lot of air when I ran on tuesday but didnt last night.
Kinda confused by it now

Foods high in soluble fiber will cause you to have gas, which includes grain and bananas. I wouldn't suggest cutting them out of your diet though as they are good for you and it's just your body not being used to such high amounts of fiber. Your body should adjust to it in a few days though.

OP, could be 'runner's diarrhea' - which I believe to be very common.
