Friends invited me to a Bohs game. I enjoyed the experience so kept coming back.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Yeah I know, WTF? what's the point in having a poll if noone can see what the results are and who voted what?

Anyway, my Grandad played for Bohs. He brought my Dad to games after, My Dad now brings me.

Went to a Bohs match about ten years ago. Was hooked instantly.

    Reasons:
The clever chants that you probably wouldn't cop from hearing on TV.

Being a part of an electric atmosphere, as in helping to make it.

Goading and bantering off real life rival supporters in the stadium.

Knowing the club and its environs represent my part of the city, my tribe if ya wanna get poetic!

Developing camaraderie with all these loons who do it for the buzz or the love and everything inbetween.

Not having to adhere to imaginary cross-city rivalries with the Evertons and the Tottenhams of this world.

Getting to watch football in the flesh, week-in week-out.

After going to London in the late 60s I started seeing the daughter of the accountant and went to see these boring matches - to keep her and her dad happy - (great game 0 - 0 draw WTF!). By the time she gave me the elbow I was hooked. :D

    Forgot to mention ............. QPR

i support aston villa. mainly because my cousin was a villa youth when i was at that age where you start to take an interest in the game. was a season ticket holder for a couple of years when i was working and could afford to head over every other week

in ireland i've been a drogheda united supporter since i was about 7 and my father brought me to my first game. had a season ticket for 6 or 7 of those years. im a little too far out of the way to be able to catch games any more though, and the lack of televised coverage means that there's not much i can do to keep up with the LOI apart from reading online

"I felt left out because my friends supported them"

    ??

Rovers...my Da has been going to games home and away since the late 50s (except 2006-2008), there was only one option, the right choice...

I'm still hearing about the Rovers and Waterford rivalry of the 60s:)

I support Liverpool mainly because my older cousin who had quite an impression on me did. I was also a big Michael Owen fan so that played a part too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,116 ✭✭✭Professional Griefer

    My family supported them.

My father always supported United, and so did my Brother(who is 5 years older than me). So when I was growing up, I had to watch football, and they supported United so then I took a liking to them, mainly cause it was drilled in to me. And when I was about 4/5, my dad took me and and my brother over to a game. And since my first trip I've been completely in love.

I'm from Tipperary and my da's second cousin was a butcher and wore an all-white uniform to work in Kilkenny so I started supporting Madrid when Ronaldo signed for them.

My uncle Tom used to live in Sale, Cheshire for donkeys years before he died about 12 years ago. He went to every home game, and most away games.
When I was growing up during the 80's and early 90's, I used to get a package from him every couple of months with all the United Review's (match programmes), t shirts, keyrings, etc. etc. etc.

Because of Tom, I had jerseys when I was a young chap when no-one else had them. I remember having the Green GK's jersey around 1991/2 when they weren't available here, also I think I was one of the first to have a long-sleeved jersey around here too.

We visited Tom in 1990, and I'll always remember the feeling of seeing Old Trafford for the first time. Been over to a few games since, but nothing will ever beat that feeling - magical....

Still have all the programmes and jerseys too.....

I remember watching Bolton play in the early 90s and thought they played with great determination. They were my 2nd team at the time (being young I was a UTD supporter to fit in!). When they played against Tranmere in the div1 playoff (95/96 i think) i then chose to be a 100% Bolton fan. One of the best games I ever witnessed.

Newcastle United because a friend in primary school supported them.

Bohs since last year really. Went to one of their Europa League qualifers with a mate and just kept going back.

Basically the same thing. Granddad picked up an interest in United after Munich, my dad became a crazy supporter then also. 2 of his brothers would have some interest in United as well because of it. Basically were always on growing up, and I just became a bit consumed by them. In my spare time when I was younger, I'd watch old season reviews from 95-96, or old taped games. I was brought from the age of 6/7 also so became second nature to me.

That's a lovely story, it really is, but let's be honest, it's not really the reason you support united.

I mean, if he had supported Colchester United and been sending you all this Colchester memorabilia, you would have thrown it all in a drawer somewhere and written your uncle off as some kind of eccentric and followed united anyway. Fortunately for you, his team just happened to be the most successful side of the era.

    Screw you Liverpool

At the time, a lot of my friends supported LoLiverpool and I diodn't follow anyone - seemed the logical choice.

    Some people are so skeptical.

I would actively support several and the reasoning isn't consistent.

I was first a Chelsea fan as a kid, about 8/9. I got drawn into the world of supporting English football teams when I was in primary and around that time Zola was playing for them, my dad was living in that area of London and blue is my favourite colour. They won the cup that year, too, so it was good timing.

Bray are my number one team. I first started going to their matches when I was about 12/13. I was initially interested in them because they were doing well in the league and I wanted to be a part of that. As I started going along, I got drawn into the local aspect of it and, from there, I was hooked.

I also support Atletico Madrid and Zbrojovka Brno as they were/are my local sides.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

I started to support my team because of Mr. Brady, Mr. Stapleton & Mr. Jennings. My old man didn't have any interest in Soccer and the rest of the extended family were GAA heads.

Cork City because they are local side.

Man United because all my Dad's family support them and it's where my Grandmother emigrated to when she was child and supporting the so called "Irish" club in Manchester as they were known at the time. Funnily it was City who were bigger club when she supported them. She was active in raising funds for United at the time of Munich and worked at OT for short period. Supported them since 1989:D

Hibs in Scotland as my aunt married a Scot who supports them and he lead me on. Supported them since 1990.:(

I always loved football when I was young. I had footballs instead of dolls when I was 2 or 3 but didn't have a team. I was 6 or 7 and madly in love with David Beckham. My uncle bought me a United jersey with Beckham 7 on the back and then my love for the club grew and grew.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,838 ✭✭✭✭3hn2givr7mx1sc

Man United I think because I was given a keyring with United's fixture list on it by a drunk and possibly because of David Beckham. Can't remember exactly. Great reasoning behind it, I know.

Shamrock Rovers because they're the first LoI team I saw live pretty much. Was amazed by the fans and they're the handiest to get to!

"There is not a prouder man on God's Earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, aye, but it was the way that we have won that has filled me with satisfaction. We did it by playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads. Inter played right into our hands; it's so sad to see such gifted players shackled by a system that restricts their freedom to think and to act. Our fans would never accept that sort of sterile approach. Our objective is always to try to win with style."

I cant really remeber why to be honest Ive supported Arsenal since before I started forming memorys :o, no one in my family supports them but I do know two of my friends form when I was lil lad support Arsenal aswell so might have something to do with it.

My first lasting memory of Arsenal is of this when i was ten or eleven,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,591 ✭✭✭ambid

Manchester United. I started supporting them in 1983 because they played such attacking football and I loved the team of Robson, Stapleton, and Coppell. Also my dad was a United fan, and United were covered quite a lot back when there was far less tv coverage of football.

When I moved to Dublin I started supporting Bohs, just because they were the closest side to my local team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

I went to a Bohs-Spurs friendly. That's how I found my love for the mighty Spurs:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,844 ✭✭✭carlcon

All I remember was my first game on TV where some guy wearing white was called "A magician" by the commentator. Being about 4, this was great... a magician!

Sometime later, I asked my Uncle who the magician was wearing white because I wanted his jersey, and he told me he moved teams and wears red now. Red, my favourite colour!

My next birthday; I had a lovely red United jersey with Cantona on the back, and United were my first and only team all because of that one player. :D

    --

Then for LOI, I played for a schoolboy team called "Cedarwood Boys", who played in Poppintree Park, in D11. After a few years playing with them, they were taken over by Bohs, and I continued to play for Bohs schoolboys/youths for another few years, where we all got passes for cheap (sometimes free) tickets to their games. So I guess I was a fan after that.

When I was 4/5 my dad and uncle brought me to watch a match between the side they supported growing up Southampton, and Liverpool. Being the little bastard of a child that I was and to piss off my dad and uncle, I started cheering every time Liverpool touched the ball. Supported them ever since.

And I also support Barcelona due to the fact that my grandparents lived out there and my grandad used to bring me to games as he had a season ticket that he passed down to my dad, and eventually to me. Had to give it up last summer due to a lack of funds.

Dad supported Arsenal so so did I. First real memory was Nayim from the halfway line, set me up well for the current run.
