    Hi

I would like to go to Medjugorge for just abput 4 days in te next 2/3 months.
I will be going alone so therefore would like to have a organised tour.

I am just wondering could anyone recommend any such tours or a cheap way to do this pilgrimage?

I have looked up Joe Walsh tours but for 4 nights in April with a single room comes to way over 500E.
Marian Pilgrimages only do 7 nights

Just any info or advice would be greatly appericated

    Thank you
    M

If you only want to go for 4 days you could contact Joe Walsh tours anyway and see if they can organise something for you. You could go out with one of their tours and they they could send you back on another flight. No harm asking.

Otherwise you could just do a DIY trip and book it all on the internet.

I'm guessing that you fly into Dubrovnik in which case 500 isn't that bad. You should know that traveling alone in Bosnia is not recommended unless you are well used to it. I'm not trying to frighten you but you would be wiser to go as a group. For instance Mostar is worth a visit but you would be wiser to travel as a group there. The checkpoints between Croatia and Bosnia can be intimidating.
If you fly to Croatia, hire a car and stay in b&bs the price will still be 500 and Aer Lingus only have weekend flights I think.
Why not spend an extra few days around Dubrovnik and the islands, Croatia is very beautiful and safe for tourists.

There is a group that does it and I've been there with them twice. I will get the details today for you. will cost ( Flight, bed and dinner and tour guide which is Vickas cousin ) 480 to 520. thats for 9 days. The next one is in May I think. But let me get some calls made for you and I will pm you asap.

Another route you could go down, is there is a guy who rents out apartments in Medjugorje a 10 a night. They are brand new apartments. His mother also owns one of the bar and restauraunts there and he runs that place.

He will also come and pick you up in his car for free. It is a 3 hour journey to Medjugorje from dubrovnik airport and there is a checkpoint, but it's not intimiditating at all. All you do is show your passport and your sorted. The checkpoint is aware that a lot of pilgrims pass through.

Mostar is fine, but as mentioned in a group. I had a friend who visited on his own while there and said he had no problems but if it is your first time go visit mostar in a group.

I hope this helps and I'll be back later on with some more info if I can.

Of course. The group who runs the trips to Medjugorje have not yet sent out a packet outlining the shcedule and forms. They are called ''Friends of St.Theresa of the Child Jesus'' and can often be found in the advertising parts of papers such as ''The Irish Catholic'' and ''Alive'' ( A free paper usually found in most Churches ).

But until they send me the details I have no idea of exact price and time but they are definitely cheaper than all the others and worth your while because not only to you get 9 nights, but you also get your breakfast and dinner along with accomodation directly around the corner from St.James Cathedral plus your tour guide is Vickas cousin. And all tours are accompanied by a spiritual director too.

Do vidjena ( Goodbye ) for now until I find more info and I will then PM you as soon as it comes.

Again Molly, I'm not trying to frighten you, as Medjugorje is very safe, but it would be wiser for you to travel with a group if you have not travelled through Bosnia before. I had a little trouble with police in Mostar who, in my opinion, target tourists. This is quite common in Eastern Europe.

or you could give 500 euro to charity, given that God is everywhere and in all things?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭noel farrell

very good post my friend, i have been there many times, most of the tours are a rip off, its still very cheap there there are private houses letting beds 7 euros a night. flights can be got 150 or so ..three miles in any direction there is poverty and could do with ,what money you have left over, if you feel you have to go there. i agree god is every where . in the bible it says go in to your room where no one sees you and the father will hear your prayer..simples as the add says

With Noel and Gooses Philosophy, there would be no point in heading down to adoration of the Blessed Sacrament seeing as God is everywhere and in all things and tells us to go pray in our room. I'm tellin ya, Catholic posts on this forum get more protestant as the days and weeks progress.

Medjugorje is a special place in which Our Lady has visited and continues to visit, it is considered by those with faith to be Holy ground just as Jerusalem is or any other place of Pilgrimage. Just as Fatima was and still is a special place of pilgrimage. Pilgrimage is important and encouraged by the Church.

Lo and behold the enemy enters once again to throw a spanner into the works and create heat and debate on the topic of Medjugorje and presence of Holiness, but will Onesimus and other believers be lured and seduced by such wileness? hmmm. Find out more on our next episode/thread/post of ''Catholics who act like protestants''..........

I 2nd Onesimus! Posts by some Catholics on this forum makes me wonder if they are Protestants masquerading as Catholics!

Remember folks, before you splash the cash, the jury is still out on Medjugorje, its not like visiting Lourdes or Fatima. There have been a lot of very suspect contradictions going on regarding the 'seerers' of 'the gospa' in Medjugorje, and both the current and last local Bishop do not believe the apparitions are genuine. Hopefully the Vatican commission will rule soon to settle the issue, but anyone that wants to go on a private pilgrimage there sure why not, it's a beautiful part of the world, just as long as they know the score.

And just remember folks that Lourdes and Fatima had their alleged opposition and contradictions by Bishops who didnt believe in them either in their hay day but it didnt stop people with simple faith from flocking to these places of pilgrimage at the time.

I'd question the assertion that pilgrimage is an alien concept to Protestants, certainly plenty of Protestants would visit the Holy Land for spiritual reasons, as well as taking part in popular pilgrimages such as the Camino de Santiago.

As for the reasons offered as to why the OP shouldn't go to Medjugore, I think that this could be extended to any travelling that anyone does - maybe no one should go anywhere? It seems a little presumptuous, I'm sure pilgrims provide a boost to the local economy and how are we to know that the OP doesn't contribute greatly to charity as it is?

It does seem unusual that the CDF has taken over from the Bishop, an unprecedented move, don't you think? It looks to me like the Bishop wouldn't be impartial in his investigations!

Been to Medjugorje twice, and had a lovely time. :)

I haven't been there myself but have met many who have. All had nothing but good things to say about their experience. I plan to go when I get a bit older (soon now!).

    but for now here is a link to relevant commentary;

    http://www.markmallett.com/blog/2008/06/medjugorje-just-the-facts-maam/

    a teaser:

in a handwritten letter to Denis Nolan, Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta wrote, “We are all praying one Hail Mary before Holy Mass to Our Lady of Medjugorje.” (April 8th, 1992)

    and another:
And to Archbishop Felipe Benites of Asuncion, Paraguay, regarding his direct question as to whether witnesses to Medjugorje should be allowed to speak in churches or not, JP II said,
    Authorize everything which concerns Medjugorje.

Molly various parishes organize tours plus there are ads for tours in the papers and bulletin boards of most shops, one week for about 500, with a few days to see Dubrovnik and the islands. You will enjoy the trip more with a group. If you ring your local parish office they will help you out.

The British government offer advice to travelers to Bosnia: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/europe/bosnia-herzegovina

As an interesting anecdote, I was once caught trying to smuggle 500ml of apple juice out of Croatia after a trip to Medjugorje.
