soya products on low carb diet

I've been low carbing for nearly 12 months now and am really happy with the way its going.

But...I was in the supermarket today and picked up a plain soy yoghurt at 1.4g carbs per 100g. The brand was Sojade. I've read so much conflicting evidence on the Web for and against soy products...can anybody offer any advise as to whether this might be a good thing to include in my diet a couple of times a week?

I love the taste of natural yoghurt and am quite happy to eat the Lidl one...can't remember the name of it...but didn't know if this was a good option as well.

    Thanks!

Okay, the good news is that soya will not make your testicle shrivel up and fall off.

There were some alarming headlines a while ago about a study which seemed to show that a portion of soy a day would reduce your testosterone level to the point where you couldn't reproduce. The study was flawed, one of the men was clearly coming off an AAS cycle, and started with abnormally high testosterone, which had dropped to normal levels by the end of the study. His starting levels were so high they skewed the whole study. Everyone else had normal levels all the way through.

So that's not an issue. But soy yogurt etc are highly processed foods. Something like greek yogurt is a lot less processed.

The OH will be delighted to hear it...but i'm female. Sorry...that wasn't clear from my post!

I do take your point about it being very processed though...male or female that's something I'd like to avoid...so that's good to know!

If you wanna eat soy then eat it like the asians do, fermented or in fresh (edamame bean) form, or if your going to eat tofu, have it doused in bone stock or seaweed soup.

Frankly, there is no smoking gun surrounding the consumption of traditionally prepared soy, but you have to wonder why it is always eaten in such specific ways by populations that consume a lot of it.

We have no real tradition of consuming soy protein powder, hydrolysed soy, industrial soy lecithin etc. so if it were me it really wouldn't be something I'd want to base my diet on.

As EileenG says greek yoghurt (tesco's own brand seems to be the nicest) has a low carb count, but I really wouldn't fret about carbs in regular yoghurt either.

If you love the taste of natural yoghurt, why not try Glenisk's Organic Low Fat natural yoghurt? It's delicious. A large pot costs €1.48, I think.

Regarding soja, I've heard that much of the soja in produce today is OGM. For this reason, I keep away from it.

I don't know if you're male or female, but if you're female keep away from soya as it interferes with the thyroid gland.

Apologies - I just got back to this. Thanks for your advice - I've given up on the soy yoghurt and gone back to the greek yoghurt.

El Dangeroso - I'd never thought of it like that - I hadn't considered the ways that it was eaten and prepared by those that eat a lot of it. That makes a lot of sense.

    Thanks again!
