Is there a decent chippy in Kilkenny? I've not had good fresh cut chips since I left Dublin over 6 months ago. Loads of people recommended Joes to me but seriously even the curry sauce in that place is greasy!

For the ultimate salid burger I recommend the Roma Cafe. A beast of a thing, its class. They have great food there. Rocko's is an other great tasting take away but he is a bit pricey and stingy with the amount of food giving out.

Larkins & Marios in the Loughboy area of town are good. Caesers in the Newpark shopping center is worth a go as well...

Larkins all the way :) Mario's (up beside Lidl) is nice too

I had to google who he is. In my defence I'm not originally from Dublin! I was just working there for a few years and discovered the wonderful phenomenon of the Italian chippy

Roma or Larkins get my vote for chips. Joes chips are skanky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭domkk

A chippy is not a chippy unless they do steak pudding, chips peas and gravy in a plastic tray. yummers.:)

Roma is your only man during the day. And the Blue Door is the only place you should go after a night out. Can't for the life of me understand why people walk all the way up to Abrakedabra for the bags of cardboard cut out chips they sell there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,019 ✭✭✭Badgermonkey

I've had a few visits to Roma where the chips just weren't fully cooked. Alan Partridge would label that as 'provincial sloppiness'.

Mario's beside LIDL in Loughboy is well run and chips for €1.90 have never disappointed - their eat in & takeaway are doing a roaring trade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 369 ✭✭1984baby

The Roma on John St - always good quality, could do with bigger portions though. Uncle SAMs on High St for pizza. Mario's in Loughboy is also very good. Any1 been to Luigi's in Newpark yet??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,506 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Mario's is probably my favourite at the moment, I always go there whenever I'm home in Kilkenny. Chips are great and their battered sausages are massive!
Rocko's is great too and so is the Roma Cafe.

Off-topic, but there are a distinct lack of nice chippers in Galway city where I live. But there are a load of nice chippers in KK!

Went to Luigis there today, nice thin base on the pizzas and good value, I liked it anyway!

For chips I'd be leaning towards Larkins/Joes/Marios as most seem to above.

Cafe Roma/Larkins/Marios or Rocko's would be get my vote but i think Joe's are too greasy :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 762 ✭✭✭Threadhead

Culletons on Friary Street is fantastic.

    The Roma is solid also.

And yeah, for all it's generous portions, Joes is just too greasy.

Couple of years ago i'd have said Larkins, but still have bad memories of a bag of absolute slop I got there a while back.

Marios is very consistent with the quality of the chips. Roma/Rocco's are both nice too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,429 ✭✭✭brettmirl

Another vote here for the Roma. Food's consistently good there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭kkmick

The roma for me too! culletons on friary st aren't bad either

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭cocoshovel

Marios is horrible imo. Its too neatly prepared and isnt like chipper at all! Culletons is a good chipper and I would usually head there. Larkins is alright.
I have heard too many bad things about Joes, but everyone seems to go there because "they give you a few chips even if you dont order them!".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 736 ✭✭✭KK4SAM

That's why its called JOE'S GIVAWAY.
As Homer say's "if you cant see thought the bag after eating from it it's just not worth eating":D:D:D:D

Roma, Blue door, and Larkins for me.

    Counter w/cash register & salt n'vinegar - check

    Fryers - check

    Italians - check

As for neatly prepared, I try to avoid e-coli if at all possible. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,041 ✭✭✭cocoshovel

I mean, it just doesnt taste like chipper. Its very dry, lacks grease etc.

I got a chicken fillet burger there a while back and it was like someone put a slice of roast chicken between a bun and that was it.

I was busy reading the post's before we went out to lunch today, our venue Langton's Cillin Hill.
On the menu was battered cod, chips or mash and pea's, you can talk all you like about some of the other establishment's, and on the comment of greasy you are right.
One place I though was absolute rubbish was given no downside at all, no one mentioned Eddie Rocket, yep over charged.
Biut Langton's, crispy batter, not your pre battered rubbiush the skin was on the fish so it wasn't reformed fish, it was cooked to a tee, absolutely fabulous, recommend you try it you won't regret it.
    No codding Foxy

    Langton's Cillin Hill......Eddie Rocket...No codding Foxy

    Think Foxy's codding himself

    Langtons & Eddie Rockets?

What about the Munch Box out in Castlecomer ?! Place is always packed even though the eating facilities out there aren't the best!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭foxcoverteddy

Yes I know Langton's isn't really a chippy and I am not saying it is, just that the fish was brilliant, okay at a price, and equally I didn't think Eddie Rocket's was bad but it was over-priced, decor superb.
Let's face it chippies are not good new's, the worst one I have ever been was in Youghal.
The best normal chippy how about Tramore and Dunmore East, long way but worth it.
    Casn you beat home cooking?:o

Mario, if you don't address the chip to curry ratio in your curry chips I will be taking my business elsewhere.

I tried a few times but alas, the standard is the same. :(

If I wanted the foil carton half full with curry soup with 4 chips floating in it, that is what I would ask for.

Just a thought, but have you considered getting a portion of chips with a portion of curry sauce seperately?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Or maybe ask them for less Curry sauce.....

That doesn't address the fact that the carton is 50% air!

It's easier to go somewhere else.

Hear Hear Willy, nothing beats a good two battered sausage or chicken fillet from DSP's. It's very popular with the lads from the Cistercian College as well. The owner also owns Matt Mellotte's Pub in the town if you're interested.

My favourites are Marios and Culletons (Best Kebabs ever, honestly!)
I could get addicted to their food :)

I really don't like Joes.. I went there a few times, and the staff weren't friendly at all and the chicken burger was the worst I've had in my life.. FAR too much sauce, practically zero salad and undercooked chicken, Yum. Oh, and did I mention the free (That's a plus!) BURNED chips? :D

Well we did it again yesterday "mario's", heaven help us, Langton's at Cillion Hill the fish and chips there are on a different planet to the Loughboy, Smithland's shop.
The price at Mario's a couple of euro cheaper, so is the quality, if you love fish and chips then go to Langton's, you will never say anyone else compare's, Langton's just melts in the mouth, Battered cod.
I hear tell that the shop in Tramore has gone down hill, anyone been of late?
No one mention's Rocco's or Larkins for fish and chips, any thing good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

The proprietors of the Fish Centre on Kilkenny’s Friary Street have been granted permission to transform part of the shop into a restaurant and take-away.”

Sounds like a logical move - I'll look forward to trying it
