    Hi,

Over the past 2 days my UPC Broadband has just being slowly slowing down. I was getting about 98 down and about 8 upload (were only supposed to get 7) and the ping was bout 5-15

And now all Im getting is 1.40 download and 4.09 upload with a ping of 137.

Its the same when plugged in by cable. Has anyone got any idea what could be happening? Or how to fix it.

    Thanks

did you reboot the router yet?

that would be the first step along with rebooting your pc.

if it's still slow over a wired connection as well as wireless then trying and test it with a second pc to rule out an issue on your computer and after that it's call upc time and go through the troubleshooting process with them (tell them what you've already tried) and if they can't fix it, they will escalate it to someone who can.

Yes I tried rebooting my laptop and router, I also tried it on 3 different laptops and a ps3. The same on all of them .

Guess Ill have to call UPC tomorrow :(

I have to agree with dillo2k10, my usualy fantastic 100 Mb has slowed down massivly over the last 3 days.

Even on their own speedtest site I can bearly make 32 Mb, never mind that downloading from some sources that previously made use of the full 100 Mb has now been going down to 22 Mb at maximum.

Modem reboot brings no change, changing DNS arround brings no change and even my usual reliable VPN that sometimes improves US routing is shown not help.

Guess I join dillo2k10 in calling UPC.

    BTW I'm in Swords

    I wish I would get 4.76, I'm down to 2.1 on a 100 line.

I called and spoke to a person twice and after reseting the modem to factory settings, testing a lot he confirmed that he can see that there is a problem since 3 days on my line somewhere.

The only solution he has was to book an onsite and the earliest that works is Tuesday morning.

I see loads of errors in the log of the modem:
Map Reject - Not Authorized for Requested Downstream Traffic ...
    TLV-11 - unrecognized OID;CM-MAC=[my modems mac];CMTS-MAC=0...
    No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=

Now either it's really my line (and its coincident that other have an issue too) or maybe netflix is killing the network.

So at 0903 this morning my broadband awoke again, I'm now back to high download rates peaking at 94 Mb.

It's like someone used a switch and all is good again.

    dillo2k10/digiman, how is yours?

I had the same issue briefly last week, and was getting :

Map Reject - Not Authorized for Requested Downstream Traffic ...

on the modem. A couple of speedtests via UPC own site, showed I was getting 2mb or thereabouts. A reboot of the modem sorted it though. After the reboot I was back to roughly 104mb on UPC site, and around 97 on speedtest

I've had exactly the same problem for a while now which was being masked by a dodgy modem. Have had UPC out twice on the issue now and luckily have had a very helpful engineer. After two visits I now have brand new modem/router and the coax cabling has been replaced.
Still though I get a drop off in the connection several times a day. I subscribe to the 25Mb plan and typically get about 23Mb downstream when everything going well. At least once every two hours or so this drops down to next to nothing (<1Mb) and only comes back after about 5 mins.

The issue has been raised to the network maintenance folks at UPC for resolution. I'm in the Dublin 15 area by the way.

Well mine went back to crawling after 2 hours of great speeds and has not recovered since than so I was too happy too soon.

Thanks jmcgold for your post, when the engineer comes tommorrow I will ask them about a new modem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 jmcgold

Hey dillo2k10 did you have any luck with the engineer? It looks like it is definitely a network issue. I've had two routers, two modems, and now the thomson modem, as well as having cabling to the house replaced, and still the same issue.
The router log contains the error
" Map Reject - Not Authorized for Requested Downstream Traffic ... "
which I've seen widely reported in relation to similar issues.
UPC say they are bumping it to 2nd level support to look at the network in the area but I feel I'm being bumped.
One thing to note, if you are having this issue make sure to chase up UPC every few days on it as they should not be charging you for the service until it is fully resolved and the calls to customer support are used as evidence of service outage.

Mine started working better by itself, I'm still not getting my full 100 but about 60.

Ill give them a call eventually but it's good enough for now. So there was no one out with me. Good luck with yours though, and ask them for a discount or something since your broadband ain't working.

Im in Dublin 7 and have been having these issues for the last few months. there is an incredible drop off rate in speeds at certain times of the day and night. And iv never got the promised 25mbs.Theres a few of us connected wirelessly so the first few times I called UPC I was told this was what was slowing it down. Finally at the weekend I got in touch with a girl in there who didnt fob me off. Did all the tests with her at the time d/l speed was around the 8mbs mark. It often runs much slower than this though. did all the troubleshooting with her and arranged to have an engineer out today. The guy arrived this morning checked signal said it was perfect. he also changed around some of the modem settings. Unusually the d/l speed was up around the 20mbs mark ( its 25mb bb) upload speed at all times is usually up around the 2.48 mark. anyway to cut a long story short hey presto its ten o clock and my dl speed is now an amazing 2.53mbs. it was around 4/5 mbs an hour ago and in between dropped to 1.18mb. upload speed is still around the 2.48. And iv made sure no one else in the house is logged on to the network. Anyway The guy left me his number to call back if there was any more problems so I guess its time to call him up again and have another house call. Its a pain in the ass. Im gonna badger the crap outta UPC till this is sorted out. But at least i know its not just in my imagination its running slow Id hazard a guess there thousands of people if not more subscribed to UPC bb packages that arent even aware they are getting nothing like the speeds promised. Does anyone know do i have the right to cancel my contract with UPC ( theres 10 motnhs remaining) for not getting the service Im paying for. And also what are the other viable options for decent bb in the city centre around at the moment.

Similar to jmcgold I had an engineer out and he wanted to replace the cable (despite that only being a couple of month old), than test, than possible change the router and than maybe check the amplifier at the headstation.

Well long story short after all checking and now having a Cisco EPC3925, a new cable and loads of other stuff I still can't get my old performance back as constant as I had it before Wednesday last week.

Mine comes and goes, for a couple of minuntes I have 100, than I might only get 10, than 50 than 1.

Something happend last Wednesday and since than this is not longer the service that I had for over a year now, I'm really dissapointed about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 jmcgold

I asked a few friends who live in the area who also have UPC broadband to run a few checks and they are seeing similar behavior.
Would it be cynical to think that UPC are well aware of this issue but, probably correctly, think that most users won't notice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭noxqs

Definitely an issue in D15 at the moment - transferring files over FTP or streaming video I get sudden drops to 0kb/sec - only long enough to cause stuttering or file transfer to fail - including http traffic like downloading ISOs from MSDN.

This is pretty annoying as it kills the file transfer but other services like IM etc is not affected.

Not sure whats going on - tried the usual steps.

Dublin 8, similar issues this past week or so, slow speeds and dropped packets when pinging, seems to be mostly evening/ night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 hollymount

I am an existing customer of Eircom for telephone and broadband (business broadband) and paying €140 every 2 months for their package and €38 for telephones and got a call from them recently offering a better package etc.
I then looked at UPC Fibre Power bundle and by increasing the speed to 100mb and anytime telephone the cost would be €55.50 per month or €111 every 2 months a definite saving.
My worry/query is do UPC deliver? I live in Churchtown Dublin so any guidance would be of great help. Many thanks

i noticed my speeds have gone to the dogs lately over the past few weeks, it even cut off on me last night at 2am, was grand by morning and the speed was fine but its brutal in the evenings

ive three torrents going now and getting around 80kbs download and its supposed to be 20mb connection

i may give them a buzz tomorrow, hopefully they can just flick a switch on their end

    im in dublin 6

  • @onion rings

Just because you are getting bad speeds downloading via torrents doesn't necessarily mean your ISP is at fault, you cant download a torrent any faster than the person who is seeding the torrent to you can upload it.

So if you have a 20mb connection your max download speed would be 2mb/2.5mb, but you need to be connected to somebody who has an equal or greater connection to download at that speed.

Back on topic I'm in Dublin 14 with UPC 20mb and noticed a lot of lag while on xbox live today. I have downloaded/uploaded 50gig since the start of the month so this could be my issue, even though this is well below my 500GB usage limit so should not be an issue.

I don't plan to download a significant amount for the rest of the month so will be watching to see if this persists

I still hope that once the people have done their netflix trials and are not willing to pay for the outdated shows 6€ a month we are going back to normal speeds.

Download that for over a year at 10+ MB are now down to 3+ MB and most of the times during the evening it's even worse.

It's the network, no question asked, I have a new cable, a new router and samknows shows the difference in quality before/after the netflix trial launch.

i've already cancelled mine. although it's a great idea, they really need to sort out a decent catalogue and get hold of some newer movies and TV shows or people aren't going to use it, even if it is cheap.

Experiencing slow speeds today in north dublin/malahide area anyone noticing this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Was slow (1-2mb) on Saturday so rang UPC up and they said there was a fault near me and they were investigating it,was back up to 49mb on a 50mb line on Sunday.

Won't be cancelling my netflix though,US catalogue is excellent value for €6.99 per month!

welcome to my world lads :( I'm on 30meg Broadband mas here in Lucan and for over 18 months speeds during peak time of 6pm to midnight the speed can drop down under 10Meg's, they have admitted that it is due to congestion, to many subscribers in the area, but that it will be all sorted out when they upgrade the infrastructure to allow the 100Meg service. Sounds like they are overselling their product in certain areas without providing the infrastructure to support it and hope that 95% of the user's won't notice the speed difference. Best bet is start bombarding their twitter account and they might take action.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,016 ✭✭✭✭vibe666

at the very least, keep onto them about it via email every few days and when you've built up a good history of complaining of poor service, throw in a request to have your bill reduced.

a few years back I had frequent issues for about 9 months prior to an upgrade on their end and as i'd been regularly enquiring (and politely complaining) as to when it would be permanently fixed, they gave me 2 months free. :)

Hey: my connection with UPC was great until about two weeks ago. Now it seems to be dead slow. It works (for certain things such as boards :p) but has anyone any idea why it's gone pear-shaped? It's a wireless connection.

I am looking for a little guidance, I'm based in Bunmahon Co.Waterford and i believe the local exchange has 3meg capacity.

Is there going to be an up grade in our exchange? or Who would answer the question?

I have not being able to get an answer form Digiweb or Eircom

In Swords here. My 50 meg d/l speed has dropped to between 4-8. I'm getting massive amounts of jitter too.

Ping isn't particularly high but It's constantly jumping making it impossible to play anything. In killing floor it's jumping between 18-999ms.

Going to give them a buzz tomorrow and see what the story is. There's obviously something going on with the lines.

Ditto same issue with speeds in the Swords area. Downloads at night have really dropped. 2-3 MB/s on 30mb/s tarrif. Its not an issue with the wireless as I have configured the router for 5ghz wifi but from checking Inssider there are 10-15 other upc routers in range.

The real killer for me is the lag on xbox live. Its gotten so bad that BF3 is unplayable with serious lag issues. This is a deal breaker for me as xbox live is by far the reason I went with UPC in the first place. I have the xbox connected directly to the router as I want the highest ping values possible.

I'm thinking that Netflix is the reason why there is such bad lag and download speeds as there is a lot of other customers in my area using UPC.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to reduce lag on the Thomson router I'd appreciate it. I did the standard xbox test and there was no report of NAT or other issues.

Else I'll wait for the Netflix trial to finish and see how it goes

My UPC in Blackrock has been pathetic the last 2 nights. Its so bad at this point that my gmail wont work. I cant even get onto the speedtest site (wont load) to see what speeds im getting. So pissed off with them

Its the same in Greystones. A lot of lost packets, jumping ping.

Not sure if this is a widespread problem. I'm with Eircom and my ping has jumped from 40 to 80 mls in the last two weeks. Eircom staff seem to me to be clueless to whats causing it. The guy in the Eircom even told me their ping on their office computer server was very high as well.

I guess most internet users don't notice the high ping's and up and down speeds. Must people just look at webpages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭Avatargh

I had extreme slowdown last night. Connection was still there, but down to incredibly slow. Too slow to even run a speed test - 1-2 mins to switch from google search to, say, the google news tab. I've not experienced that before from UPC.

    Dublin 7, by the way.

maybe over subscription to broadband services in these areas no allowance for overhead built in! If your speeds are decent enough outside peak hours of 6pm to midnight then it's congestion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 265 ✭✭Wanders_fan

Mine is 24/7 since maybe Thurs

it goes off for maybe 2-4 hours max at night. seems as though its contention but it goes from say 25mb d/l speeds to somethng mental where i cant even get web pages to load. that imo is not on and not proper service

There is definitely something going on, my connection is usually rock solid and never any probs, but d last week experiencing speeds like this off and on.

I'm in Dublin 9 and UPC is ridiculously slow.

just did a speed test there on the UPC website and download is 0.26Mbps and upload is 1.38Mbps.

correct me if I'm wrong but it definitely feels like its slower than dial up.

Also was talking to a friend in Galway and he's having similar issues... wonder if its nationwide???

MY UPC in Malahide has been terrible. I was struggling to load a webpage, having to constantly reset my router. Then it would work OK for maybe 5 -10 mins. This has lasted around 1 week. Was just about to call UPC and since yesterday, everything is back to normal. 105Mb down and 8.9Mb up.

knock the two off that download result and you'd be a lot closer to the dialup mark. but still, it's pretty damn slow. :(

I'm in Galway City, with UPC nearly 2 years now and the Broadband since Xmas 2011 is ridiculously slow, I've got a 25MB package and I'm only getting between 2 & 3Mb/s download at best, with 0.25Mb/s upload.

I done numerous speed tests via wireless and with an Ethernet cable connected directly. I have changed my router password numerous times in-case someone was hacking in and still no better. Its unbelievably bad, I mean even getting onto Gmail fails, I've tried it on numerous devices and with a Mac and PC and its all the same.

Is it my router?? which is Cisco EPC2425 (Its the one UPC provided me with originally).

This is unbelievably bad service as I'm paying for 25Mb/s download and 2.5Mb/s upload, I know you never get the actual speeds but this is an absolute joke,
Anyone else in Galway getting these crap speeds from UPC??

Anyone do anything which drastically improved the speed??
Please share as I'm out of idea's at this stage and UPC keep telling me that all is fine their end when I ring up to explain the service...

Please see attachment for verification... :(
