Sure sensible fiscal responsibility should be negated by these stealth taxes. We'll pay when sense returns to government.

They should introduce a troll tax, with trolls and spammers having to pay per megabyte for every bit of bandwidth they waste with inflammatory nonsense and the like.

The "is this dress too sexy for my sister" guy alone could pay for a new hospital.

They seem to find the money from thin air to pay their "special" advisors. Aren't they getting paid enough to do the job they were elected to do?

I don't think we've paid enough tax for years & I don't think we've got good value for money for the taxes we have paid.

What this government & the ones that follow them need to do is to strike a better balance between what is paid in & what we get back for it.

So lets see:

You work, you pay tax.
You buy something, you pay VAT tax
You own your own home, you now pay a tax.
You use water, you pay a charge tax (nothing new about this one. Many places already paying water charges, but its being brought in every whereelse)
You want your garbage to be taken away, you pay a charge tax
You own a tv, you pay a tax (now pc to be included)
You own a car, you gotta pay tax.
you wanna use a certain road, you gotta pay the toll.
... i have to be forgetting a few aswell.

When is enough, enough?

We don't spend our money efficiently. We don't plan for the long-term and neither do we expect this to happen.

So we're pretty much fucked.

When all the shit that costs money is paid for.

That's the problem.

It should be "when all the **** that's worth the money is paid for".

They manufacture enough to pay fortunes to undeserving bondholders, incompetent auditors, failed developers, failed bankers and failed past politicians.

Let that be the manufactured stuff and come back to us to pay for the rest.

I gotta say I am reluctant to say the least to pay some of these taxes simply because they were dreamt up by this and other governments to make the people pay for a massive deficit that was caused by the greed and gambling habits of the big financial institutions. In short.
I also think these financial institutions have a f#ckin cheek to then loan these governments bailout money at interest. People have gotten so used to the banks running the world that the immorality of it all seems to pass them by, and they blame the private sector or the public sector or the people queueing for the dole or the unions. And the government and especially the media encourage it. Because while people are blaming each other, big business is still raking it in.

Funny how no-one complained when the banks were offering ordinary Joe Soap huge loans and mortgages and so forth.

Don't kid yourself. No-one was forced into accepting huge loans they'd never be able to pay off.

I'm not saying the banks are blameless but to portray the customers as poor innocent victims of corrupt institutions is naive.

I agree with Enda Kenny. House tax is immoral and if you pay it, you will be committing a sin. So don't be a sinner. Be a Shinner and don't pay.:)

People who borrowed beyond their means were just as irresponsible, I'll grant you that. But then, most people will accept money if you bombard them with unsolicited loan approvals and credit cards. It would indeed be naive to think those people were responsible for the mess we're all in. The banks made all that possible.

I don't disagree with any of that.

My point is though, that I'm weary of seeing threads where people are saying that they're not going to pay certain taxes because protesting against the likes of the household tax by refusing to pay it is a pointless form of protest against the least costly of all the recent tax hikes that in all probability will cost those who don't pay it more than it would if they simply paid it in the first place.

The likes of Sinn Fein should really be ashamed of themselves for encouraging this form of protest as ultimately it will achieve nothing but to hurt the people they claim to be fighting to protect.

I have no problem with pay for use taxes/charges.

People are incredibly wasteful and by introducing the charges they actually cut costs and waste.

What I find funny is how people blame the current government for all new charges when many have been planned for a long time and aren't really in the current governments control.

Work with a guy who is blaming the banks for him spending his savings on a house!! Is arguement is they casued the inflated prices thus making him have to spend his savings.

Or more to the point, stop viewing your taxes like some benevolent fucking contribution that should be distributed as you see fit. To wit: why are my taxes being spent on such and such a thing that doesn't immediately enrich or benefit me.

I know life is real. That's why I didn't saddle myself with a mortgage that was too big for me, buy a car, eat out every weekend, spend heaps on the credit card, go drinking every weekend, get taxis everywhere etc etc.

I lived in the real world !!!!

But I'm still being punished through tax hikes, service cuts, new charges, to clean up the mess I didn't create :D

Maybe Ill go live in the land of chocolate and see how that goes :P.

Well, I have a tiny mortgage, no Bulgarian apartment, no mobile home in Kilmuckridge, my car is ten years old and I haven't had any large, ostentatious parties. I didn't predict anything. I just don't live that way.
