    Hi all,

My son has an Xperia Play on pre pay and the deal is he can use wi-fi for downloading games etc but not 3G/GPRS, his pre pay is for calls & SMS's only.

Given I am an Android superuser (only in my own head) I went into Wireless & Networks -> mobile networks -> Access Point Names and changed the Vodafone MISP APN address from hs.vodafone.ie to blahblahblah.hs.vodafone.ie then went into Vodafone Live APN and changed it's APN address from live.vodafone.com to blahblahblah.live.vodafone.com thinking that would prevent any 3G/GPRS connections but given how quickly he emptied the €10 topup he did on Sunday (he's only made 3-4 calls and sent 3-4 texts in the last 2 days) I'm assuming he's somehow managing to get online via 3G/GPRS but obviously I can't replicate that now as he has no credit!!!

Suggestions anyone as to how I can properly cripple his ability to connect via 3G/GPRS? I know I can "disable data access via mobile network" in the wireless menu but that's too easily turned back on ;)

Appreciate any help you can give me on this.

    Ben

There's a Vodafone Guardian app in the Android Market. There's an add-on listed for it too that warns you if it's forcibly uninstalled.

No idea what it's like to use though.

You may have "hidden" apns and they may clock his tethered usage ( via wifi) . IE there is a special hidden apn tied in with his tethering usage. A software upgrade for his phone could introduce hidden apns at any time. The operators have covered themselves with T&Cs, the cnuts, but this is how they get paid. :(

see the points on Backup and Restore...they mean backup, nuke em and restore the one that is left.

Well I deleted all APN's using APN Backup (there was only 3. I was expecting APN backup to find a few 'sneaky' ones) which will hopefully do the trick. If it doesn't I'll get onto VF and ask them to disable data for his sim.

    Cheers all,

    Ben

Don't Vodafone allow you to check your usage breakdown online (i.e., you can check exactly where the credit has gone)? I know O2 do this.

Scrambling the APNs or delete them will prevent him from accessing mobile data, but there's nothing stopping him from putting the correct details back in.
