Im 21 6'2 & 190lbs.I wouldnt say Im fat or overweight but Id love to lose the beer belly and tone up muscles.Ive cut my calorie intake by 4/500 a day and began skipping and running.Today I started my skipping.I did 4 "boxing rounds"(3 mins skipping moderate intensity followed by 1min rest then repeat)which broke a heavy sweat.Hoping to get to 12 rounds in 6 weeks with increasing intinsity.Thoughts?

Unless you are very good at skipping, there are better things you can do to burn calories. But either way you wont burn much such a short time anyway and it will be completely down to diet if you succeed.

I assumed skipping was good, quite intense and raises your heart rate pretty fast.

Number of skips means little with out knowing the pace. If you are flat out (like how a boxer skips) then 30-40 and and starting immediately after a mistake is likely a decent effort. But 30-40 easy skips aren't that hard.
3 minutes skipping coudl be very different from one person to the next.

I'm talking in general here, I haven'ty seen you skip obviously. But most people in the gym I see with a rope would be better off doing something easier so they can put more effort in.

I've introduced skipping since Jan as part of some agility and speed training im doing.
I was crap at it, perhaps like mellor suggested. But I really enjoyed it, maybe my crapness made it a challenge. I do 8(I think?) different types of skipping including a tough 'squat' skipping (all be it at a slower pace, obviously) which is fun. There are other types like lunges or pogo jump type things and I'm working up to doing doubles which is a very fast pace.

Like anything, I can say I'm playing football and just kick it at a wall, and Mellors comments could have merit applied to that, I'm not good at football so I should do something else...

But if you enojy skipping, and are willing to push yourself, its just as good as any activity. I'd almost say its better than most activities for the sheer fact of the explosiveness required to have you complete body off the ground at a very high frequency.
The loading and unloading of the muscles also surely assist in core strenght and balance as well as making yourself faster, assuming you are pushing yourself.
3 mins sounds ok if your happy with that, my intervals are 1min and I find it easier to go all out at a lower time. However lower intervals mean recover should be lowered too, so perhaps 20secs for you keeping your 3:1 ratio for 12 rounds?

    Good luck

If you're new to skipping or coming from a detrained state, be careful of your shins and knees. There's a lot of repeated foot to ground contacts and they're only going to increase exponentially as you get better at skipping.

I skip with almost all of my PT clients. It's a good warm up, burns calories and if you've never done it before, it's nice to learn too. Makes you feel like Rocky when you're training which is a bonus.

I use it in about 3 or 4 different ways depending on how far along the client is. Warm up, light plyo or as a conditioning exercise. I can't recommend learning how to do it highly enough.

The foot strike thing... yeah it's an issue... sort of. But I'd sooner have someone with bad mechanics skip rather than run and I'd warrant they'd be less sore after skipping. If you're technically proficient at skipping (which doesn't take long) then you'll be fine. All the skipping I do takes place on a soft, matted surface anyway.

I've started this recently due to involvement in kick boxing and I'm much better than I thought I'd be at it. I'm fairly fit with jogging and cardio but this sweats the bejesus out of me and it feels great. The noise is awesome too :D
