Good suggestion by LOFT to give this its own thread as it will get lost in the "where are you from" thread.

    We are looking at 2 outings to begin with;

    18th February in the Heritage - €40*
    31st March in Dundrum - €35*

*additional €5 charge added to cover cost of prizes.

If you are interested in playing, put your name down here

    Thanks - Keano

PS. Everyone is welcome to play. Whether you are playing off +3 or 36! It's about getting out and having fun.

    Thanks Keano.

Just in case are looking to mix up the standard in the groups, I received my handicap of 18 on Saturday but in reality I need about 10 shots on top of that. I assume 18 is the default that everyone starts with?

Lads, playing Portmarnock limks on the 17th of feb so it is unlikely that I will make the heritage.I played it a good few times, one of the best, enjoy. I will be available for Dundrum. what teetimes are booked?

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

Probably will have college on both those Saturdays but I'd love to play both... Can't put my name down but will see how I'm fixed closer to the time and if there's any space etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭nocal

Can't make Feb 18th as I'll be out of the country that day....

As for Dundrum - any chance of slightly later time slots - long way to go from Dublin for early times....????

I can ask but being a Saturday it will be tough. If it makes you feel any better a lot will have early starts, me included!

I probably won't get out to these. Sorry guys, enjoy the days out.

    Hi all,

I hope you don't mind a newbie joining the fun on a boards outing. I haven't been in the country long so I reckon this would be a good way to get out and play various courses and meet like minded golf tragics.

No GUI as I haven't joined a club here yet, but I could play off my former AGU if that's acceptable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 535 ✭✭✭golfnut1

Great stuff keano looking forward to it.
If everyone is giving €5 for prizes how are the hcaps decided for lads without official GUI hcaps?

Any society will usually give 18-20 to those without GUI who inform them they are new to the game. Obviously, we are relying on people's honesty as in if someone once played off 8 and has no longer a GUI handicap that they inform us about this beforehand.

Great stuff looking forward to it. I must dig out the reciept for those 100% waterproofs that aren't waterproof.

    lads,

I book society outings for my golf society and the prices quoted for Dundrum and the Heritage seem excessive. I know the displayed price for the Heritage is €40 at weekends, but with a little haggling and assurances that 30 - 40 people will be attending and eating food afterwards and possibly before the golf, I'd be amazed if the rate for the golf didn't come down closer to €30 especially in mid February!

Dundrum the same issue. Euan in the pro shop there will come down a bit or throw in some free tea/coffees scones etc on arrival at the minimum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,015 ✭✭✭link_2007

bailey, as Keano said in the OP the price for the golf is €35 with everyone chipping in an extra €5 to cover prizes.

Take your point on board but we cannot guarantee any sort of numbers. Being an internet based society we have to rely on people who say they are going actually turning up.

    Just a suggestion.
Would you give them a call and see if you can get a better rate and if so let keano know and take it from there.

What if we based the booking on 40 and if we don't have the numbers on the timesheet by the 10th of Feb have a visitors prize and ask boards members to bring guests. How would you feel about that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

I booked an outing last May for 40 people in the Heritage. Breakfast on arrival, golf, starter, main courses, dessert, tea/coffee afterwards and it was €70 per person.

I'd be confident of getting the same rate for €62 - €65 the way things are these days, and your going in February as opposed to end of May when I booked it.

Just saying, by ringing up and haggling a bit you'll get a great deal. Dean Redmond there is a top bloke and always happy to help out.

Well keano has the heritage booked for €35 on sat 18th. Since you have a contact their would you call him and see what you can do?
Not to undermine all the great work you have done keano but I'm sure you don't mind if bailey gives his man a call and hopefully can get a few quid off?
If not it dosent matter I think 35 is grand anyway.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 12,808 Mod ✭✭✭✭Keano

Yes it is a great deal but asking someone to shell out €65 is a lot. Not everyone want's to have breakfast, it means arriving a lot earlier nor will people want to hang around and have food. I like to think if people want food they can look after themselves.

    Yeah agree.
Bailey was talking about getting the heritage for 30. That's what I was on about.
If he could, great. if not the 35 you have at is great too.

I agree with this, keeping the food separate makes the over all price cheaper and more accessible for everyone. Which is what we want really..? No.? I think the numbers attending would actually drop if the food was incorporated, be it good value or not. Nice ,simple and as cheap as possible is the best way to do it. Especially in this day and age, the prices quoted definitely offer good value as they stand.

Sorry to hear that Vinny. I wasn't at this outing but I'm sure it was a genuine error. We'll see you sorted out this year.

BTW no need for the cut. Cut's will take place after the first event.

No need for apologies Keano, and I didn't join for the prizes, just the crack and a game of Golf. But appreciate that, as i said, I hated to ask.

    Roll on the New Year,

Oh i don't like the way this is going
vinny wins without an official handicap in macreddin and isnt going to get cut
shouldnt this matter go before the committee as non gui handicaps just dont work when mixed in with real golfers
i hope there is a real nice prize waiting for you pick up vinny
makes it all so worthwhile, doesn't it

Just I wouldn't be sure not being a "Real Golfer "

    no humur intended cosmos
including non gui handicaps has been the downfall of all budding boards societies down the years and even though this one got off he ground it will all end in tears if the guys with official handicaps dont take control of this and eliminate the non gui guys before its too late
    this is a critical issue

didnt think so, but you are right this will not work if the official GUI Golfers step forward and treat this social forum, social gathering, as a serious golf club

and disgregard the fun factor it was designed for

I can appreciate somebody being a bandit. But not having a Gui and still being able to play golf, well enough it seems to win a comp, shouldnt bar me or a lot of others from wanting to get together and just play golf.

I understood this society was not about prizes, also its a society, which means non Gui golfers are welcome

and as Keano said himself, it will be this year that issue of issuing handicaps will be sorted as cards are handed in

I may be wrong here but cant you have a society handicap ?

Maybe put in a ruling that you need 3 cards before you can win something going forward

This would cater for the non GUI players, and would be not to hard to implement

I am sure this might ease your fears and that of the "Real Golfers"

Personally your type of attitude would be something that would turn me off playing in the society especially the type of tripe I have highlighted above.

Instead of chasing new members away we should be encouraging them to join.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 cosmo244

well I am afraid your comment Real Golfer would have put many a man of turning out

    gets the facts straight,

these questions were raised last year, no issue of handicaps, it was a bit of fun

roll on the official handbook and the entering of 3 cards, but i'm sure I am not the only one who took your original comment, ie oh I dont like were this is going, and i hope there is a real nice prize waiting for you (sarcasm obviously not intended) the wrong way

as stated in original reply it is comments such as that would put people off, is this going to be a pain in the hole or just an excuse to go out and have a game of golf,

    I am for the later

I'm afraid thats a fine romantic view of the world but there's signs of a clique emerging already in the society as far as I can see....was always going to be the way unfortunately.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,645 ✭✭✭k.p.h

Could the troll like comments and messing be refrained from in any of the Society threads.Personally I don't really mind it in general as it's sometimes a bit of craic. But Keano and lads are actually putting real time and effort into this thing and would be a bit of a shame to see it get a bit sour with people messing, be it intended or not.

People shouldn't be worried about handicaps or anything too competitive as it stands, it's just meant to be a bit craic and an excuse to belt a few balls.

How do you figure a Clique , I know 2 lads out of 15 that are on the list to play ,

Most of the others who have played games in the society seem like a decent bunch of lads just looking for an excuse every other Saturday to get out for a round and try out some courses around the country .

Im looking forward to the Society and hopefully the handbags will be forgotten about sooner rather than later and that this turns out to be a very successful society.

Lads, its a society, a social outing. chance to meet fellow boardsies and have a few rounds of golf. relax.
Every society has non gui players, we are not going to exclude anybody.
i can keep a record of all scores from each outing and adjust non gui hanicaps accordingly for each event.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭nocal

As far as I can see there are no handbags. The society comprises a bunch of people looking for an excuse to play different courses with fellow golf nuts.

Certain comments in the society threads should be ignored - there appear to be some posters who feel the need to post about the boards society but the chances of ever seeing them at an outing lie somewhere between extremely slim and none.

Guys you are feeding the Trolls. As has already been stated by KPH and CharliIrl it is a day out for like minded people. I can catorgorically state that there is no clique, there is no special society within a society, there is not even a secret hand/thumb shake (or if there is it's secret:D). Please do not let these posts abve or any other b**ls**t posts about the society put you off. If you are into golf no matter at what level then it's a great day out and all Boardies are welcome regardless of GUI handicap or not.

I am not on the commitee but I have attended the last two outings and can truthfully state that the above posts could not be further from the truth.

Well said scubapro. Your right there is no secret handshake but it was mentioned at the last outing that we needed one as we didn't have our boards sign!!
Last time you just approched various strangers that were busy with there phones and whispered "boards" and hoped they knew what you meant. A bit wired but fun none the less.

I think it was around the 15 -20 mark , although things a looking a lot more organized this year .

Only got out a few times last year as it was setup near the end of society golfing season I think.

This is something I think I'd like to be part of. I only started playing last year (not been out much lately) and having made a new years resolution to play in all 32 Counties this year, this could help me on the way.
