Sorry messed up the other thread..can the mods please delete it, thanks

    Right

Picture the scene. You're a world class footballer, playing wherever La Liga or PL, for a top team

    You're quality. World class

You were born wherever you were born in Ireland...Cork, Dublin, Galway...BUT, you have a Brazilian grandmother so you're eligible to play for Brazil.

So who do you play for? Ireland or Brazil. Give your reasons

Would you play for Brazil? 70 votes

No way, I'm Irish, I play for Ireland (or whatever country of your birth)

Yes, I would, more chance of winning a World Cup etc

    Brazil are Spain-lite these days.

    Brazil?
The team that has been quite for the last 10 years?
Pffffttttt Holland is where it's at.

To right I would. Run across the water to get there if I had to. I'd feel bad scoring 4 goals against Ireland but ye would take me back when I get dropped from the Brazil squad for handing out party invitations to all the deadly looking female fans.

I like to think the pride of representing Ireland in the greatest stage of International football would mean more to me than winning it with a country I'd no connection with.

As I'm unlikely to make it as a professional footballer at this stage though, it's hard to judge.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

btw I picked Brazil because they are historically a very very strong side, with flair players, fantastic weather, women and beaches

Not necessarily the most dominant force atm but you can substitute Brazil with Spain, Germany or the Netherlands

If as a kid I was running around Bray in Brazil jerseys, telling everyone I was Brazilian, only supported the Brazil national team... In other words identified myself as Brazilian, then I would play for Brazil.

If I am the way I am now, and spend my childhood recreating Houghton's goal against Italy etc, just me granny was Brazilian? Then I would play for Ireland.

Don't know if I could play for a national team of a nation I didnt identify myself as a citizen for. International football should be about taking pride in the shirt, not shortening your odds of a World Cup medal.

Yes. If I was that good, I'd want to be the national hero.

If I was a professional footballer, I could declare for England (born there) or Ireland (lived here since I was 12 and have Irish parents) but I wouild declare for Ireland, no matter what.

I doubt that you could possibly experience anywhere near the emotion of what it meant to be going to an International tournament like the way Duff did during the national anthem before the Estonia game in Dublin.

I would imagine things like that mean a whole lot more to a player than playing for another country just because of their success.

I'd only choose Brazil if I was allowed to give myself a one word nickname ending in "inho"

If I had a non-Irish connection I would have to favor that country in every aspect to Ireland to play for them. Same if I wasn't born in Ireland and had Brazilian connections.

I am Irish to the core no way I could even comtemplate playing for another country really.

How are those the only two options? I'd rather be a world cup winner than care about what some Nationalists think.

Saying that... if I'm world class and am good enough to play at the highest of levels, I reckon that would give Ireland a good chance of doing well, therefore still gaining a lot of success myself - so it'd be a close call.

I think a better question to test people would be choosing between whether you become an international, playing every game for your country, while only being paid €500 a week at a LOI club, or getting a move to the the Premier League, where you get paid €50,000 a week, but never get an international call-up.

Then I'd take the €50,000 every time, and I bet a ton of these "I'm not a traitor" nonsense arguments go out the window. Everyone's a traitor for the right price.

If you were talented enough to even play for Brazil, Trap still wouldn't pick you. So Brazil it is.

I'd only ever play for Ireland!! That's it! I'd have no interest playing for any other country. I'm Irish and proud of it. That's it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,528 ✭✭✭✭dsmythy

It would have to be Ireland as it is the country I would have an affinity with. Has there been a situation where a player plays for a perceived better footballing country based on having a grandparent from that country?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,873 ✭✭✭Skid

If I was eligible for Brazil, I would probably have some Brazilian family connections.

If they were significant, and If I spoke a bit of Portugese, i might give it a go.

Still, I have more chance of playing for The Moon against The Earth than getting an International Call up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

No, genuinely I believe you should play for the country you were born in tbh.

Doesnt matter how it affects Ireland in relation to the English lads who tog out for us when they realise they are never getting an English call up etc

2 different completely different situations, your one is akin to emmigrating, nothing wrong with it. I don't know what your job is, but if you do work for an Irish company, and an english company offered you a job that pays, what, 100,000% (maths may be wrong) more you'd be ****ing stupid not to take it.
In the OP's question money doesn't come into the equation (I know international players get paid but if you're one of the best players in the world it would be peanuts compared to what your club are paying you), rather pride in the jersey. It would be like GAA players swapping parish for a county championship.

Me, I'd never declare for anyone other than Ireland no matter how good I was.

I'd rather be a national hero in Brazil. There are so many more benefits in terms of endorsements, glory, lifestyle, the football and lingerie models. When im swimming in my wad of cash, in my poolside villa in Rio with Adriana Lima bouncing all over me, I really dont think i would care about what a bunch of randomers living out their failed dreams by supporting a football team think of me :D

I'm pretty sure every Irish international up till relatively recently did indeed have this choice - or at least the choice to play for Engerland.

Anyone who has one grandparent that was born whilst Ireland was still part of the UK has the option.

It's the route taken by John Barnes, Tony Drago, et all.

Depends on how class I was.

If i was the best player in either squad id choose Brazil, if I was Irelands best player but only an average player in Brazils team id pick Ireland.

Loyalty doesnt come into it too much for me, its mainly about money and status/fame. I think most people would make similiar choices in their chosen professions but view footballers who do the same as mercenaries

    Oh you're class

    Real class

You're starting in Brazil's first team but in terms of being the best in the team that doesn't come into it. All you know you're a guaranteed starter when fit

Ireland and only Ireland would I ever play for, you could offer me a 1,000 virgins and all the money in the world and id like to think id still say no, these days you can get enough glory and money from club football, international is meant to be all about the pride of wearing ones national jersey.

Oh I know it's not the same, but I was getting a little tired of all the "I'm not a traitor, so..." posts. Far too much of that Nationalist/Republican nonsense flying around these forums.

I fully admit the wage increase was too outrageous to make it a valid choice, but I still think it makes my point.

I think you'd find FIFA banning Ireland fairly lively and there'd be no-one to play against.
