looking to trade in the car this year. currently have a 2007 opel vectra 1.9 diesel. looking at either the opel insignia diesel or the new peugeot 508 diesel. both in basic spec with only extra being metallic paint. which is the one to go for. have looked at other cars but hate the mazada 6, mondeo and avensis. would never touch a skoda as there a cheap mans car and although i like the new passat but my brother has that car and dont want to copy him. basically want a nice looking car from the outside so have narrowed it down to these two.

I'll ignore the short-sighted Skoda comments

In basic spec, take the 508. Quite a nice place to be, but at least get the Bluetooth version.

Otherwise, up the budget a little and get the Insignia SC. Comes as standard with Sat Nav and the engine changes for 2012 have apparently got rid of the power delivery issues that spoiled the ecoFLEX models up to 2011.

One mans Cheap.... I personally rather the Insignia, but in the 160bhp engine. But alot of it is down to personal taste. The new Pug diesels seem to be doin some serious mpg. If your doing milage that is.

I haven't driven the 508, but I was very unimpressed with the diesel Insignia rental I got for a couple of weeks last year. Inside like a coal-hole, lousy visibility, ridiculously light steering, nasty stereo, stupid electric handbrake.

On the plus side, very easy/comfortable to drive long distance, reasonable fuel economy.

Peugeot 508 is getting great reviews, and looks very good too, so I'd go with that. The Insignia is a bit colour sensitive, and to be honest I find the design beginning to age a little now.

God, I'm not a gadget freak but basic spec anything sounds depressing. I'd go with the 508. Interior of the Insignia is horrid and I've heard more negative than positive reports.

I've actually driven the 508 but in 2.0d form. seemed fine and a v good looking car. Doesn't ride as softly as French cars supposed to though.

Being the third person to reply to this specific comment, you're going to be crucified on here for the Skoda comment and rightly so. They make great cars and you should be able to get a nice spec one for your budget rather than a base insignia which look like crap in my opinion especially without alloy wheels.

just bought mondeo - same 'range' of car but far better reviews. I owned a Peugeot for years as well as the old vectra. Peugeot was far more reliable but the vectra a much better ride. I'd go - Mondeo, Insignia (nice car) then 508

Given the OP's obvious lack of knowledge about cars, there's really only one car he should get

there's a difference between knowing nothing, and being blind, and you'd need both to purchase a Tiida.

I'm going to get roasted for this but even dyed in the wool Octy fans must concede that you must be crackers to buy one now. The current model dates back to 2004, which is a lifetime in automotive terms these days, the 2009 facelift did little to move things on. At best the Octavia is an average car with an above average boot, feint praise indeed.

There is a new one on the way next year which may be worthy of consideration.

I remember pricing a 170bhp Superb with all the bells and whistles and a 160bhp Insignia with all the bells and whistles, and they were largely the same price. The Superb had only one or two more "toys" than the Insignia. The Insignia has a better chassis and looks better.

The 508. I have driven neither, but I'd always pick a Peugeot over an Opel when it comes to largish saloons. Peugeot really know how to build a comfortable car.

I'd take the 508 over any other car in the same segment in fact.

Most povety spec cars look fairly mank though:)!

But yeah, I agree with all the other advice given to the OP - do not buy the bottom of the range model in either car!

I agree, it's out 7.5 years and I certainly wouldn't rush out to buy a new one. Same with a Golf or an Leon. VW are having a laugh by just facelifting their biggest sellers.

What I will say however, having tried practically everything in that class when buying that the ones I would have over the rest are cars from VAG or Ford. They are still well on the pace for their class, although that's not going to last too much longer.

As for the OP, have been a passenger in the PUG and I have to say it's nice to travel in, wasn't gone on the looks but they've grown on me a lot. Maybe option bigger wheels as said as they do look lost in the arches.

I like the look of the estate better from the rear quarter. (Or tourer, supersportswagon or whatever they are calling estates these days)

While I understand the cheap mans car comment a Skoda makes somewhat of a statement - not that I care I wouldn't buy one because I want rwd and lots of poke not fwd and a 4 cylinder engine.
However I really can't see how a 508 or an Insignia are any better if anything they dont compare!
€25k on a new Pug is a definitive way of showing you're not cheap! Losing probably €15k in 3 years!

very happy with opel all along. anyway just replying to previous posters. mondeo is too outdated for me as is most of the skodas. hate the look of the superb and the octavia is out a long time as others have said. i would like the alloys on both cars as they looked nice on the brochures but not sure how much extra they would cost. I wouldnt pay more than €500 extra for them. its really only the 508 or insignia I know have in my head. i had the citroen c5 in there aswell but thought that it was out a bit too long now aswell. really like the idea of the 508 since its the freshest design now out in that class of car.

I just bought the new avensis, love it! Opel - Never again would i go near them! Worst company I have ever dealt with, I bought a brand new astra a couple of years ago, 9 times it went into the garage as it was cutting out and losing power, in the end I refused to use the car and opel refused to replace it or refund me, I ended up going to see a solicitor, turns out the solicitors wife had the same problem! And opel were refusing to deal with us, I pulled out as it was taking up to 2 yrs to go to Court and I could afford to be without a car, so i ended up trading it in and not telling the other garage the history.....

Since my problems, I know now of 3 other cases with opel were there have been similar poblems, and opel refusing to do anything, one thing I can tell you is, 2 years down the line when it does go to Court.. they have a habbit of settling on an agreement outside the Court doors and paying out! Its a pity you have to wait two years before it will happen!

Theres a new 2012 model, not much different than the 2009 upwards, its got neon lights or daytime running lights as toyota call them, darker alloys which look sporty and the rear windows are slightly darkened and something different about the grill and the inside is a little nicer. I love it!

The back lghts are different as well! Darker front lights too, very nice looking cars, and a very nice facelifted. Really outdated the pre facelift though.

You must be one of the unluckiest people ever, Opel have a reputation for helping people out long after the warranty is gone (up to two years). I know plenty of people with Opels and only one person had a problem, and that was with that crappy 3 cylinder 1.0 Corsa.

Also, the Insignia has a four year warranty, which I note is more than what Toyota are offering. The Mondeo also has a four year warranty too.

To go back to the OP, the Avensis is a really poor car by today's standards (in my opinion), I wouldn't bother with one to be honest. Maybe the facelifted ones are better, but I doubt it, the pre-facelifted models are really really poor. Crap interior, harsh ride, poor levels of equipment, noisy engine etc. They just feel like a car from about 15 years ago really. I bet they're a crap car to drive too, most Toyotas are very boring on the road. I prefer the old Mk2 model (03-08), it is a better car in many ways. The current Avensis will probably be very reliable, but it is comprehensively outclassed by any of its competitors in every other measure.

Considering I know of 4 other cases than my own to have faults with Opel I will never deal with them ever again! Opel Ireland headoffice have complete wasters working for them, Ive had fights with many of them and not one decent person there!

I had to deal with several Opel garages to have my Opel repaired and even they were wasters! Donnery Opel in Cavan were the people who sold me the car, Theres so many words under the sun I can think of to call him right now put im to much of a gentleman. My blood is boiling talking about Opel! Murray Motors in Donegal were also crap service! The only decent Opel garage I can say tried to look after me was the garage in roscommon, really helpful....

Op, does it have to be a brand new car?

Here is a 11 reg middle of the range 508 Active model which is practically new having only 2k km on the clock, for alot less than the price of a brand new entry level model:

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=713236802817550

BTW the Citroen C5 and Peugeot 508 are basically the same car just with the 508 having fresher styling but technically the 508 is 4 years old too.

no i only go for main stream cars. id put hyandai and skodas on the same bandwagon. i could just imagine the first thing my father would say if i brought home a skoda -"sure didnt they take over from ladas" anyway have my mind set on either the insignia or 508. also i know the dealers for both quiet well.

Why not buy a car that you like as opposed to buying a car you think others will be impressed by:confused:?

The ironic thing is that the Superb is better than the Passat in every conceivable measure bar the badge (it is actually more reliable than the Passat too) and admittedly the looks.

Anyway, to re-iterate my point, the Avensis is a crap car.

I wouldn't spend any of my cash on a large Peugeot saloon. It's ugly and there is no question that you may as well set fire to 25k cos you'll never see it back! It'll be unloved and unwanted in the 2nd hand market.

I'd echo a previous comment. Peugeot haven't made a good looking car for at least 15-20 years. What happened to their design team?! The 405, 406 and 306 were really handsome motors, not to mention the 406 Coupe. A clean example of a 306/406 still looks relatively fresh today.... I don't think you could say likewise for their successors.

God no, but each to their own! There's one near me, I drive past it every day and it looks bulbous, heavy arsed and heavy nosed. Bumpers all scratched on it cos the owner probably forgets how huge its rear end is! What's with the enormous nose overhangs?

Peugeot stopped using Pininfarina to design their saloons. The last one Pininfarina designed was the 406. And yes I agree, they have never looked right since.

Peugeot used to have a great rep back in the 80s and 90s but you don't see that now. Hopefully the new 208 GTi (over 100 kgs lighter than the 207 GTi so that's a start) will start to redress the balance and bring them back to the glory days. For what it's worth I like the look of the 508 a lot and it has gotten very positive reviews about how the driving experience is much closer to what Peugeots used to be like than anything over the past 10 or so years.

Utter tosh and piffle. Opel are the best manufacturer in Ireland for looking after warranty and out of warranty claims. That's based on a much larger sample group than your and that one you heard about from the bloke down the pubs' uncles' dog.
