The downstream attenuation would increase by about 3dB, I take your point about upstream.

it may well be that the router is reporting incorrectly as you say and that the downstream attenuation is actually 56dB and @Techno Mick is probably correct in his assumption that he is 5km from the exchange and that the speed is probably correct for that distance.

Hi Tony, so do you think the 2meg down speed is the highest that I can get at my distance or is it worth my while persuing this with my isp and/or Eircom?

Thanks to you and to be confirmed for your help so far btw :)

Just found an advanced stats page in my router which shows my attenuation as 56 down and 31.5 up.

You guys were right about it being a mistake in the router's reporting.

So, working off that with kitz it says my max speed is about 3850ish, almost 2meg above what I'm getting, but my understanding is with a noise margin of 17+ the line quality is good enough for it to hold the higher rate and not drop constantly???

The dsl speed checker - http://www.speedguide.net/dsl_speed_calc.php
shows that maybe 3.5Mb might be possible at 56dB attenuation and it agrees somewhat with your own modem report. It MAY be possible to squeeze some more speed as your noise margin is ok, but you'd have to see if you could persuade eircom to bump you up to 3Mb or whatever and see how it goes as regards reliability.

Yup, I wouldn't worry about chasing a meg or two if I had decent speed, but as I'm only on 2meg I may as well try it.

Will report back if anything is done....
