    Hi folks,

Firstly apologies, I have no doubt this has been covered before, but some searching didn't turn up what I was looking for.

Could someone point me in the direction of a list calorie/nutrition information for takeways? A range would be great, but Chinese is really what I'm after.

    Thanks
    Matt

Would you be able to ask the takeaway?

Not all take aways are the same.

All takeaways are different, and depending on region portion sizes can vary too. There are a few calorie lists out there but they're all way off (60 calories for a chicken ball?)

That's from a chipper in England. It's not exactly what you where thinking of but it's a fair eye opener when you see how chipper stacks up against other takeaways.

Interesting chart, albeit kind of biased. Fishtastic sounds like a special so it's probably a tiny portion of each item. I wouldn't use this as an excuse to eat at a chip-shop - but I'm sure you're already aware of that.

The Meatball Marinara sub is subway's most calorie dense sub (they probably selected the most calorie dense items from each chain). According to subway, a 6 inch meatball marinara is 300 calories so the chart appears to also use the most calorie dense ingredients (sauces, cheeses, bread, etc.).

It's all about making good choices wherever you go. In Subway, for example, a 6 inch Chicken Breast sub is 233 calories - but southwest sauce would add 90 calories (replacing this with sweet onion sauce would reduce it to 32) and cheddar cheese would add 57 calories (versus the 40 calories for American cheese). So simply by replacing these two choices, you save 75 calories and would be no more hungry.

Fishtastic is the name of the eatery, the portion is a full sized fish, chips and peas. No question it's biased but in the past more often than not I've sprung for the marinara 12', it's the done thing for the unadventurous.

A portion of boiled rice from the Chinese beside me is roughly 200g.

An average portion of uncle ben's rice is 62.5g and has 215 calories. That's just the rice... add in your dish and the calories will pile on.

I also go by the logic that if I'm asking how many calories are in it, I probably shouldn't be eating it.

Good point... everyone has a reasonably good idea what has low calories - any type of lean meat (with a small serving of gravy or some spices or marinade) with as much vegetables and as much salad as you want. The salads can even be those ones with nuts or seeds through them as a source of good fat.

I've read somewhere that a typical chinese takeaway usually contains around 3,000 calories (this is probably about right considering a lot of people go for fried rice as opposed to boiled - although it's really the sauces that are the killers). Of course, the portion size is usually enough for two - but that still means 1,500 calories each.

However, considering you could have an equally filling homemade chicken stirfry with plenty chicken and as much veg as you like for somewhere in the region of 500 calories, why would you eat something that would be costing you an extra 9 mile run just to burn off the difference? Or, if you are bulking, why not just cook the stirfry with extra chicken and add some cashews as well. At least then, you know all your calories are coming from good sources - and not fatty, cholesterol laden sources.

Of course, go for the chinese from time to time but, in my opinion, even once a week is too much. If your considering getting one once a week, consider going once a fortnight instead.

Have a read of this article - some of what looks healthy contains massive amounts of calories.

are you not comparing the weight of cooked rice (take away) with uncooked rice take(uncle bens )? Id imagine rice probably triples in weight after being cooked...

The 62.5g portion of rice (cooked) would fill a third of the average container from a chinese.

I tried it because I was curious.
