there is a lad on youtube in the states that uses his AR .223 caliber

he has loads of videos this is just the first one i clicked on

Not efficently it wont knock them. Its below the minimum legal calibre for Europe.Absolute bare naked minimum is .243,and even thats not enough by European standards.:(
You'd be better off loading a 12GA with slugs or 00buck.

After watching that video,I'm not surprised he lost his hog,if he shot it three times with a .223.!
Think thats proof enough it isnt effective against WB.

Ive heard so much about wild bore in Ireland I said Id start my own thread. We need to start seeing some pics in the photo thread which is unlikely to say the least.:D Maybe a pic of a big black cat will be posted. Sick to the teeth of hearing about them now. lol

do you think they will have to up the maximum unrestricted calibre now that we have dangerous game in the country up to 44 magnum ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭juice1304

lol i think this answers your question, the hog was shot 4 times over two years and then finished off with his pistol. i think i'll pass on the .223 for piggies.

It took over 2 years to kill this Feral Hog. He had alot of Russian Boar in him. This video shows the other 3 times I shot him as well as the hunt that finaly ended his life. I can't say I'm happy about it. The more I look back, the sadder I get. He was one tough, smart hog! He evaded me many times, made a fool outa me some. I shot him 3 times before this, once on the body, in the head and in the neck. This time I give him another body shot. But that STILL DOESN'T do it! I have to shoot him a 5th time in th ehead with my glock, off camera. I will miss the Ghost Hog. The Music In this video is done by Alan2496 here on Youtube if Y'all wanna check him out. He does all his own cover songs and is very good at it!

If it's got tusks and an inclination to gut me with them, bigger is always better right up to the point where I can't shoot it well anymore. Lot of folks on the continent using the various 9.3mm and .375s for them, but plenty also using .30-06, .300 mags and some 7mm mags.

The 44 magnum in carbine lever action would be ideal for these Irish boar or even fallow.;) 105F029BE06D403FBFB22C32AC7CBE2D-0000343911-0002701853-00800L-A1FB8FCA1B3049C09151C890D42F6172.jpg

In a lever, why not a .45-70? .44 mag is still a pistol cartridge, rather you than me using it! I wouldn't mind it as an excuse for a .375 H&H mag myself.

Id still prefere the 44 mag over an elephant gun any day.;).

have my heart set on the 30/30 ( thats why I'm selling the 223)

already have a 22WMR lever action winchester

would also love the 44 mag ( just for the hell of it)

I only fired 50 rounds of .44mag in my life.
Some calibre for close range as can be seen below

4gun, this one I found and thought of you :D

You'll love the 30-30, 4gun. It has even less recoil than the 223. The limitations in the range of the cartridge mean you really have to increase your stalking skills too :)

Your bollocks on the line, your call. I'd take the bigger gun.

The 45-70 or the 375 H&H would be great if they weren't restricted and we could reload :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,590 ✭✭✭Tackleberrywho

I'd prefer a rifled semi auto 12g for boar, if they were not restricted.

I remember hunting goats with slugs back in the day before they became restricted ammo.

I dunno, I'd be applying for the restricted cert. Pretty much a certainty if you ever had any intention of hunting bigger stuff in Africa, since no non-restricted firearm would be legal to use in the vast majority of places. Pretty much textbook case for granting the cert there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,102 ✭✭✭Hibrion

There's no doubt the 375 is a very versatile caliber. It's just so difficult to get a restricted cert for anything where I am.

It always was vauge and grey that here Tack,I remember back in the dark past I was told everything from them being prohibited under the FAC,to they could be got,but no one ever had them,[Apart from deer poachers who cast them in musket ball moulds.]

Which is all the more reason I think we will see a surge and intrest in the restricted shotguns and slug category.Good ,because there is a WA1500 disipline as well for shotgun slug shooting.Got to "practise" right?;)

As for lever actions and boar.
An Alaskan Co Pilot in 45/70 or .444 Marlin please.:D

Have to say, one of the fun guns on my list is a Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70. That just looks like a bucket of fun, provided one has a good physiotherapist.

Its a bit off yet, would absolutely love to get the 16" barrel winchester trapper in 44 mag, but have no idea how they be on deer

my 223 has very little recoil to begin with,..then again I barely even notice the recoil of my 308.. so it gets better and better

did you put a scope on yours or just using iron sights, would love to see it did you ever post a photo ?

Poulo recently pm'd me a youtube video of an old guy shooting that very same gun and calibre, he did a fair bit of plinking with if in a short space of time, did not seem to rattle him one bit.
the ammo would hurt you more in your pocket than your sholder.

No scope. It would ruin it to be honest.

I'll post some pics next week when I get a chance. If you're ever in Leinster you're welcome to have a look at it.

    my thoughts exactly
I recently picked up a winchester 22wmr and origionally I had no intention of putting a scope on it,...but I couldnt get the rang of it at using the iron sights..I put my little leupold 2 x 9 x 30 on it and I'm now getting groups of less than 1" at 100 yds

It is unlikely that I'll be making the trip up any time soon, but who knows anything can happen.
Likewise if your ever fancy a trip sown south let me know we might find some work for it ;)

People load up plinking loads with cast bullets at reduced velocities for that sort of fun, which is also a good cheap option, but the full house stuff is stout. Have shot it in a much heavier gun than that little lever and it was comfortably the equivalent of a .30-06 in a sporting weight rifle. In that little lever it'd be north of .300 mag felt recoil, good bit north of it.

most likely, the bullets were solid lead right to the casing, that the beauty with reloading i suupose
I cant say what it would be like ...heaviest ~I've ever fired was a 300short mag and a 7mm remmy mag
believe it or not i felt lees on the 300 short mag and even got a 1 hole group at 100 yards with it (very chuffed)

Yeah, you can't load cast bullets to the same velocity as jacketed ones. It wouldn't be as "sharp" as the faster magnum rounds, more of a big thump than a sharp jab, in terms of recoil, but in a light gun, all bets are off. Have shot a couple of .300 mags, friend has a .300 Weatherby on the way, so that'll be a new animal altogether (and best not even to wonder at the cost of the ammo) but that sort of recoil level so far hasn't bothered me. I reckon that little .45-70 would be a barrel of laughs.
