Recession? What recession?!

    Hey guys,

Just want to throw this out to see does anyone else feel this way. I'm a student in a full time course but I work once a week, just to keep a bit of cash coming in. I don't have severe money issues, I manage to pay rent and bills so I count myself lucky as alot of people can't afford this.
However I have noticed that students can still manage to go out alot! They also splash a lot of cash on clothes etc. This doesn't really bother me, it's the fact that they then complain about the recession ,and not having money. This is especially true of one of my housemates, who refuses to turn on the heat ( keeps saying prices are too high and recession etc etc etc) but goes out most weekends and often travels down the country to go out.

Does anyone else know people like this?

    Is this a personal issue?

    OP,

This is an advice forum - is there a specific aspect of this you require advice on?

    NB

If you have any issue with a post or poster mikemac1, can you report it rather than backseat modding.

    Cheers.

    I was asking a question

If I was back seat modding I would have listed another forum

    OP,
different people have different priorities when it comes to money. Just because someone goes out a lot, or spends money on clothes, does not mean that they are not feeling the pinch just like everyone else, it just means that these are the areas where they want to spend their money...and not on household bills, like your housemates.
I got confronted before by housemates asking me "how come you always have money to go out and enjoy yourselves and we're always broke?", simple answer was I don't spend a fortune on clothes every weekend, on getting my hair done every 6 weeks etc. I bring my lunch with me every day instead of using canteen, i get the bus, not a taxi...you see where this is going?
I spend my money on nights out, socialising and my housemates spend their money on what they like doing. it doesn't mean that any of us have more than the other

Ireland is not in a Recession at the moment

Indeed. The term 'recession' has a clearly defined meaning, and by that meaning, we are not in recession. The last 2 quarters showed growth, albeit small.

However, socially, recession is taken as an umbrella term for being unable to afford heating oil, having to disappoint children because 'santa couldn't make their toy of choice in time', having to drive a car untaxed risking impound, worrying if you are next on the revenue's hitlist and many more symptoms of living in a country that is financially in very poor shape.

OP, as another poster has said, people have different priorities, varying means, and differing ways of handling the cash they have.

And what do you say when they start complaining to you about not having money? Do you point out that they've been going out? If not, then you've got nothing to be complaining about
