Well lads I was out on one of my local permissions rough shooting today when I came across these footprints. Its all I seen all day and they could be seen everywhere I looked. There would be sheep not to far away so I'm assuming its sheep, I'm just curious to know what yee think they are? Thanks DEEFAFFFBFE545078CFC3075A425FCD5-0000343911-0002700325-00800L-70C4AF0315E1434BAED889DC3F1E3B8A.jpgB7C55AF155D04D74B86280D96E010541-0000343911-0002700324-00800L-D8D704B1CD0448A09D2C474646CBD1DE.jpg

I think LB got a match for the small prints on the bottom pic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭LB6

not really cause in the OP the hoof is fully split, the boar print both sides are connected

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,719 ✭✭✭LB6

i'm even doubting myself now - the original pics are 2 semi-circles with the curves back to back, where as in mine, they're 2 semi-circles are not back to back curves.. The search goes on!

    Just looking at these two:

    Wild-boar-footprint-in-mud.jpg

    They look fairly similar

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭tomcat220t

They seem more curved on the out side ?
    Hard to tell
The op prints seem more straighter on the out side ?

Can you give us the scale and what county you are in? That will help pin it down.

Neither picture shows hog prints, as there are no dew claw prints to be seen in the mud. In that ground and with tracks of that depth, hog prints would be immediately recognizable.

I don't think they are reds either. They are usually a bit more square.

The bottom pic is very blurry, but you have several animals there.

To give you a better answer, I'll need scale.

It is a pity the picture wasn't sharper. Very hard determine

sheep hoofs are wider at the rear an narrow towards the toe whereas a goats hoof is more the same width from rear to front!!

I myself am no expert tracker.

I reckon that it is a fallow Doe track and a fawn at foot.
The print I'd guess is less than a few hours old judging by the clearly defined shape on a day that rainfall was average to heavy.

I'd also reckon the deer was running due to the distance between hoof marks.

I think Fallow deer due to hoof shape and size, I have tracked goats, Sika and red and none of them fit the bill.

Don't get me started on boar in Ireland

By any chance was the area slightly marshy, perhaps with rushes?
Quite close to a place where there was heavy cover?
    A deciduous or conifer woodland?

look for hair on the barbs of barbed wire, fallow deer hair is tubular and if bent will stay bent.
Goat,Sheep,Cow hair is more wool like and will not be tubular.

However this is my best guess based on your info and my limited stalking experience.

size would give a better clue ,was there any dung around i'd still go with sheep especially as the op says there were sheep nearby and the tracks were everywhere and they were all he saw all day
most ewes get their feet trimmed in the autum/winter that leaves sharp defined edges to a print such as the 1st pic
