I'm not that fit at all but could run about ten minutes continuous so do you think starting with the C25K is the best bet or would I improve faster just adding on a minute or two each run? Thanks!

YOu could try something like a Hal Higdon 5k Programme or alternatively jump into the C25K at a week that suits your current abilities (maybe week 4 or 5).
It's generally always better to follow a structured programme rather than trying to go a bit further/faster each run.

Lots of success stories with c25k.

Maybe you don't need to start on week 1 of c25k so measure how far you're running and how long it takes and chose a week to start from that you'd feel comfortable with.

mapmyrun.com is good for measuring the distance you're running

Great, thanks for the advice, it makes sense to follow something that has served many others well so I'll go with the C25K. Thanks!

Do you know how far you cover in the 10-15 minutes?

You could go easier on the run part and intersperse this with some walking and by doing this you'd improve fitness and probably be able to get 30-40minutes of continuous activity right now.

Any structured program will be of benefit - I've no experience of C25K but a lot of people use it so appears to be ok at the very least.

I'm on week 7 of this, and it's working out great. Got it off a lifehack website. Looks similar to that C25 thing, but it has user-friendly pictures instead of text.

I do 3 mins brisk walk, then stretch, then start the programme:
