UPC Can't access www.smallnetbuilder.com Help

I am on UPC. I cannot access this site for the last week. It times out http://www.smallnetbuilder.com
It works fine on my 3g connection. Would a fellow UPC customer try it please.
I'd like to see if all UPC customers are affected or is it local issue to me.
    Thanks

I'm on UPC and it works fine for me. It might be a DNS issue if you have manually assigned them.

If so change them back to automatic.

im on upc and its not working for me. in firefox it just stays at "connecting..." in my browser.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,528 ✭✭✭Patrick2010

    Same here, can't connect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 nan0dog

Thank you everybody for trying. It's not a dns issue as the name resolves correctly. You get the same timeout if you use the IP, 216.14.113.203

Very strange that vanbis has no issue. I'm kinda stumped, traceoute doesn't report any errors, drops either.

I am using the Thomson modem 50mbit connection, wonder if you are using the same vanbis.

Try turning off the Firewall on the Thomson and see if it helps, seen this issue on Thomsons before, weird thing is I'm using the Thomson and its working fine though!

What's your IP? Is it in the 109.255.x.y range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 507 ✭✭✭mark17j

Site Loads perfectly for me on UPC in Dublin on the Cisco

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

Times out for me on UPC too,I have the Thomson router.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 nan0dog

Yes IP is in the 109.255.yy.xxx range. All other sites are perfect. I'll look at the fw.

    Firewall Protection Enabled

Nothing else is enabled in the firewall tab.

I disabled it. Same "The connection has timed out"

I'll try a reboot with the FW disabled.

Reboot didn't help. I see in the advanced tab

    WAN Blocking Enabled
    NatSip Alg Enabled

Anybody know what these settings do?

    Looks like a draw 3-3

    3 CANNOT access smallnetbuilder.com
    Random, Patrick2010 and starviewadams

    3 CAN access smallnetbuilder.com
    Vanbis, mark17j and omahaid

Cheers everyone, good to know I have some company :D

Works for me no problem.. 50mb connection in Dublin 15 with Thompson.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 757 ✭✭✭rockal

I'm also on a 50mb connection in Dublin and can't connect with IE8 or Firefox.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 757 ✭✭✭rockal

Ok a workaround for anyone with this problem is to access the site via http://darkcoat.info

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 nan0dog

Thanks Rockal for the workaround. Very handy. Loks like it is still a draw at 5-5. I've asked the twitter UPC webcare guys to have a look. Lets see if they have any ideas. It seems unlikely to be a routing problem as some people can connect.

I'm on UPC, in Dublin with a 46.7.*.* ip address and I can't access the site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 nan0dog

Thanks everybody for the continued updates. Talked to the twitter webcare guys and they got a support rep to contact me. He is forwarding the traceroute and a tcpdump to the network engineers. I'll update the thread when they contact me.

We still have a draw with 6 upc users have access to smallnetbuilder.com and 6 do not.

6-6 and the game continues :-)

Maybe some others could post their traceroutes (both those who can and cannot access the site) to help UPC find the problem? It looks like a routing problem to me.

Edit: I just tried from another isp and it worked fine so its not a routing problem as the last hop after where it fails on my UPC connection is the site itself.

Can't access safelinking.net which is really annoying. My friend contacted UPC earlier and they said they can access it in their office. but that was about the jist of it. Anyone found a workaround for Safelinking? can get on with a proxy but the authentication bit is broken that way so it's just as useless really

EDIT: Btw can access both the wrestling page and smallbuilder

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 nan0dog

I can access smallnetbuilder.com now. Unfortunately I don't know what the fix is. I assume UPC network techs have changed something.

    BTW safelinking.net is also working.

Guys, can you post your IP address (not the full address, just the first two set of digits on the left). You can find your IP address from www.whatsmyip.org.

I'm fully convinced that this is only a problem for IP addresses beginning with 46.7.*.*...

Not really, UPC control what ip address is associated with your router. You can try and use a proxy server or a VPN to change the ip address you are visiting a site from, but I found that these didn't work for safelinking.net.

Can I ask people who have this problem to please let UPC know. The more people that report the problem the sooner UPC will get off their asses and do something about it.

try that link using IE.... some websites dont work well in firefox or chrome

also upc DNS servers often go down or crap out.... set your primary dns to 8.8.8.8 and secondary dns to 8.8.4.4 (google's dns servers) on your pc.

It's not to do with the browser.

    I've tried 4 browsers on 2 machines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 413 ✭✭Skittle

Yea, I've done a simpler check. I've tried accessing the site on my phone over my 3G connection and it's fine, switch to WiFi and I can't access the site. I've tried on my PC using the Google DNS servers and the OpenDNS servers and still no joy. Besides I can do a tracert and it resolves the IP address, but the tracert fails somewhere withing the UPC network.

No issues with either site here, but on a 79.X.Y.Z address. I have Open DNS on my router, nothing set on the PCs (208.67.222.222 primary and 208.67.220.220 backup).

Mate of mine was onto UPC. He opened the call about this on 30th.
He's sent UPC on his traceroute and also mentioned this thread.

Today he got told by UPC that they can access safelinking on a 46 IP but don't know why he can't.
Would prolly be easier to change these customers to a new IP on a case by case basis.
