    Hi,

How much do you think it would cost to have the timing belt replaced on a Galaxy/Alhambra/Sharon 1.9TDI in a garage?

    Cheers

It depends on which engine it has. What year is it? If it is a PD engine €350 for timing belt kit and water pump. If it is the older non-PD engine the parts are more expensive so you would be looking at €380 or so.

Jumping on bandwagon, I was wondering when should it be replaced and cost for Fiesta 1.4 with 122,000km

    '05 115PS, I'm not sure if it's a PD engine?

Out of interest, engines can go for well over 100k miles without the belt replaced, is it just a small gamble to leave the belt there over the recommended 60k?

Is the engine totally kaput if it goes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

Yes that is a PD engine. If the belt goes it will cost a lot of money to put it right. Certainly not worth taking a chance on.

On the TDI, it'll suffer serious damage if the belt breaks. The engine, like all diesel engines, is an interference design meaning the path of the pistons overlaps the path of the valves, and it's only the timing belt that keeps them out of each others' way.

If the belt breaks, the valves WILL hit the pistons. At a minimum, you'll want new valves and lifters after this, possibly pistons, and possibly conrods if the impact is severe enough.

The 115 bhp engine is a PD. Make sure the garage you take to will use the proper lockdown tools to do the belt too. Anyone who claims they're not needed is not someone you want near your car.

It depends on the engine, intervals are different for every engine type.

Its far from a small gamble, if the belt snaps or a tensioner fails, you could be looking at the price of 4 timing belt changes at least to repair the engine.

The replacement interval for your car is every 160,000kms or 8 years.

Any idea on the labour cost for getting a TB done on a Mondeo 1.8TDCi 2008? I can get the parts myself, just want to get an idea of labour costs. Probably will get the service done at the same time.

I too gonna jump on here... have a 07 octavia rs tdi. There is currently 40k miles on it. Was told the belt was due at 80k miles, but seen as it is coming up on 5yrs old should i be changing the belt anyway?? Cheers.

The belt and chain on those are due at 200,000kms or 10 years.
Special tools are required to change the belt/chain.

The labour price would vary from garage to garage and for something as important as a timing belt, many mechanics would be reluctant to fit parts they haven't supplied due to warranty issues.

These are due every 150,000kms or 4 years and should be priced similar to Georges prices above.

If ye don't mind I'd like to ask a question too, as I'm confused about parts.

I need a full timing belt kit including the variator for my alfa gtv 2.0 and was budgeting about €350 for the parts, but Micks garage quotes all sorts of silly (low) prices for timing belt kits.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks :)

George/ ND, just to tap some of your extensive knowledge. 06 1.9 PD Octavia, would I be correct in assuming Belt/ Water Pump/ Tensioners at 100,00km/ 4 years?

    99 ford focus 1.6, 115,000 miles. Anyone?

Off the top of my head, I've no idea what price a kit for those would be, I know they have two belts(timing/balance shaft) and also need specific tools to time properly.

If your pricing on the likes of micks garage you'd need to be sure that the kit has everything included.

    120k or 4 years I've got here...

Due every 100,000 miles or 10 years. A good bit overdue if its still original:eek:

I can see this going on and on and on and.......:P

    Thanks Doc.

I'd been given conflicting advice regarding that. Is much rather err on the side of caution with atoning belt, as I'm sure you'd agree.

Thanks ND, spot on, when I checked on Micks garage they include the two belts you mention in the kit :) and mention details of the tools to time them also so that gives me an idea :)

The 1.9 TDI will do the 120,000km no problem at all. They are a very reliable belt setup.

I changed a one today on a 2004 Transporter 1.9 TDI with 148,000 miles on it. When the owner came to collect the van he told me it was the original belt

The longest I had seen one of them go without being changed prior to today was 200,000km on a 2008 Passat.

Still and all George, that's taking some serious chance!!!

The belt must've been hangin on.

Its the plastic tensioner and guides that usually give up before the belt itself.

The type of use can dictate how long beyond the interval they will last, starting the engine puts the most strain on a belt and components so lots of short trips(school runs, taxi etc) would be worse then constant steady motorway cruising.

Don't get me wrong I'm not recommending it as a good policy to adopt or anything :D;)

The belt actually didn't look too bad. I reckon I should frame it :P

    Definitely.

Didn't your old man used to have old belts and clutches dotted about the place?

To Nissan doctor. Thank you for that. I have a friend who put the wind up me saying I should have had it replaced at 120,000km and my NCT is next Tuesday!

The timing belt being needed or overdue has no effect on the NCT anyway.:)

I thought that when they rev the sh*t out of the engine during the NCT it might affect it if it was anyway faulty or was nearing replacement.

Well they are not responsible if it does but if if breaks when they rev it(3k max normally) then it would have broken the next time you drove it anyway.

Warranty wouldn't be an issue, these are OE parts I sell everyday. Ford say belt due at 160k. Car is near that now so I am not taking the risk of leaving it longer.

The earlier tdci engines are listed as 160k, all the latest gen tdci engines are listed as 200k.

The warrenty issue/difficulty for the customer could arise if there was a problem with the car/belt/engine after the job. The mechanic will likely blame the parts, the parts supplier will blame the mechanic and the customer is stuck in the middle.

    I'm thinking of buying a 2004 Ford Fiesta 1.2, 88,000 miles.

How much would it cost to change the timing belt? I've just waiting for a response from the seller to when it was last done, and if it's still the original how much I can expect to pay to get it done.

Is the timing belt checked on the NCT? As the car just passed last week.
