How far do you commute?

If you cycle for your commute, how far is your commute?

To keep it the same for everybody please say how far each way (ie one-way) -- if your commute is 10km each way, just put down 10km, *not* 20km for the day.

It's 6.5km direct but mostly go on a loop to make it worth my while. Anything from 18-50km depending on the time of year, weather etc.

Only about 3 km, wish it was longer, it's usually the happiest time of my day!

Depending on which way I go 11 to 13.5k each way.

During the summer I add on whatever I can get away with before d'missus realises I'm awol.

Just about scrape into the 25-49km category. 24km in, 26km home, via my preferred routes, which I use most of the time, with the odd detour thrown in when the evenings are bright.

A paltry 8 kms each way. Wish it was longer.

10.5 km each way each day. In Dublin so saves me at least 30 mins in morning and same in evening. Clears my head and I'm not a happy camper when I have to get bus/train !

6k five days a week at the moment. When the evenings get longer will be doing 30km 3days per week.

Glenageary to the city centre, I think its about 13k though I think I can add an extra 1k for all the potholes I have to cycle in and out of

Office is right behind the house, but I cycle a couple of k to do an early morning gym session most mornings. As much for sanity as fitness.

14~16k. each way depending on which way I go. Haven't done it in a couple of months. Really need to get going again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,190 ✭✭✭✭seamus

    10.4km each way.

On the way in I could add in some more mileage, but I prefer to get as much sleep as possible. On the way home all alternative routes involve adding climbing to the route, which was never fun when you're carrying a bag full of gear and isn't something I would want to do now I'm on the singlespeed. Instead I just try to hammer it up the climbs that I have.

22 - 25km depending on the route - Bray to Fitzwilliam Square

Once or twice a week depending on customer meetings

15km in and 19km home. Haven't done it since the frost hit before Christmas. Maybe tomorrow

perhaps weekly distance might have been a better poll, as from the replies, some people aren't doing this 5/5?

I guess it depends on what you're trying to ascertain.

Most of the data I've seen on commuting tends to look at the distance per commute rather than the daily or weekly amounts.

This is then cross-referenced with an additional question of "How often do you commute by bicycle"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,524 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

This thread was done sometime last year and I remember I had one of the shortest commutes, around 2-3 km. Since then, I've moved to a different building in work. I now commute 858.3 m ............ m stands for metres :o
I suppose at least it's twice a day and 5 days a week :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,256 ✭✭✭c0rk3r

14.44km each way which takes anywhere from 30-42minutes depending on mood / ability. Compared to two buses which takes anywhere from 1hour10mins - 1hour30mins. Ive lost my cycling routine for the last couple of months, need to get back on the bike and save that lost time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭bbolger

33-37km each way (depending on route).

Do it about twice a week when the days brighten up a bit more.

New commute is 18.8kms each way. 5 days a week. Best part of the day. Twice.

For those commuting the longer distances(20k or more), do you have the luxury of showers/changing rooms etc in your workplace? Or is it a change of clothes and baby wipes in the toilets?

The reason I ask is I want to start getting in some miles in the mornings but don't have any facilities in work. So kinda worried about body odour smelly gear etc.

Have others had any hastle from work about commuting, when doing longer distances?

Forgot to say my direct commute is only around 4k, But would be hoping to do 30-40k as the day's get longer

I wouldn't commute that distance by bike if I hadn't got access to showers tbh.
Why would anyone get hassle from work about commuting?

I think weekly distance is a difference kinda of a question, but it would be interesting to see that. For example some one doing 5k a day vs someone doing 20k once a week.

I find the sink enough in a wheel chair cubicle. I stuck a few plastic hooks up on the back of the door to make it easier. Leave a bag in work every other week with a change etc.

What causes smell is stale sweat, so just wiping yourself down (wet facecloth, baby wipes, etc.) at the end of the ride should prevent you yourself from smelling for the day. For your gear I find that merino wool is extremely resistant to developing smells so I use a lot of merino stuff when commuting (my commute is only 12km each way but I can wear the same merino kit several days in a row without problems). Merino is also good for temperature regulation so it has a number of benefits.

I know of one person, working at a senior level within a company, who was told that the sight of him cycling to and from work would reflect badly on the company if any of their clients saw him. That was a few years ago now but I don't believe that such a negative view of cycling has changed a whole lot in the minds of some people. I used to get some funny looks myself in my previous job when I turned up at some client sites by bike, if there was an entrance for commoners I felt I'd have been directed to it at times.

I was doing about 16/17km to a place with just a tiny sink. Commuted in cycling clothes then hung them on the back of the door. Washed myself in the sink with a cloth/rag-on-a-stick. Make sure you do between your legs. jock-itch isn't nice.

Some serious distances in there guys, fair play to yis. However, for the likes of Greenmat, cdaly & roforofofight, your commute has to be the lower distance and the fact that you choose to go in circles would have to be attributable to a workout routine rather than a commute.

@ roforofofight - I only cycle 10k in, but I have a shower every time rather than put up with the stick and feel of stale sweat! If I were you, just go for your training spin, go home, have your shower, and do the 4k into work at a leaisuely pace so as not to build up a sweat!!!

I only do just over 10k myself, but not regular enough for my liking. Have set myself a realistic target of 300k by end of Feb so twice a week should do it (today was day 1!).

I joined the local cheapest gym in Carlow, it's €120 for three months, I have no intentions of using this gym ever, only for showering in the morning. At todays petrol prices, if I cycle to work 14 times, the fuel savings will have paid for the gym.

You are right to some extent, but it's indicative of the distance posters are prepared to cycle in the right circumstances (ie if they lived that bit further away, they would probably still choose to cycle to work). In addition some of us may not take the shortest route possible for other reasons (I take a slightly longer morning route which gets me into the 25km+ category because of specific road conditions on one part of the journey for example, others may do it to avoid a hill)

It's not clear what, if any, conclusions the OP is looking to draw from this poll, but it would need to be recognised that the contributors to the cycling forum are not going to comprise a random sample of either commuters in general, or specifically cycling commuters. In particular I would suggest there is probably a disproportionately high number of contributors (when compared to the general cycling commuting population) using their commute as part of a wider training plan, and putting in longer distances than they strictly need to get to and from work (again, I may add 5-30km on my return journey for this reason)

In fairness that makes a lot of sense. Just feel like I'm wasting valuable daylight by having to go home change/shower back on the bike and cycle to work.

I think I'll try this first and see how it goes.

Ya that is a good way around it, but as @stevieob says when I'm this close to work anyway, going home between training spin and commute probable makes the most sense.
