Compliment a cyclist

I know that a lot of cyclists get abuse from us cars on the road sometimes, but I want to share a positive remark.

The other day when I was driving to town (Dublin) some pedestrian lights had gone red up ahead. I saw a cyclist stop at them despite there being no pedestrians and wait patiently until they turned green. Now I know many might say there's nothing special about it, but he could have easily broke the red light and most people, if anyone at all would have noticed or cared, but because he stopped (and was lit up like a christmas tree) I certainly noticed, he was a great example on how to obey the rules of the road. Well done to him :)

What a slacker. He obviously wanted an excuse for a rest.

OP, you shouldn't be so surprised - I suspect you will find a significant number of regulars in this forum would do the same;)

Probably changing the radio station and turning up the temperature on the heated seating while casually waiting for the light to change!

...Oh wait you said the cyclist stopped! ;):D

Yes, but unlike 90% or more of cyclists.

I used to cross a particular busy road at a set of traffic lights in Dublin city centre every work day morning and evening for years. Once every few weeks a cyclist would stop for the red light. Every other cyclist ignored the red light and drove through the crossing pedestrians.

As a motorist I have more respect/regard for cyclists than I do as a pedestrian.

Rather than potentially spark a debate (that has probably been done to death) on how people have seen other cyclists not stop in this sort of instance, I was kind of hoping the guy might have been able to recognise the description of himself should he frequent the forums and get the praise he deserves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,031 ✭✭✭fat bloke

Lads. The thread title is "compliment" not "castigate". The red light debate is old enough. Can we leave it alone for this thread for jaysus once.

Never come across someone who thought he was better than a pedestrian crossing.

That has to be me. I'm the only cyclist in Dublin that stops at red lights.

Could be me - I always stop at red lights and am usually lit up like a Christmas tree! :)

no no no it was definitely me.
well spotted though, cos I wasn't actually on the bike last week, but I do stop at lights. EVEN if there's no-one actually crossing. Although I do start to move on the first flash of amber

    Cyclists stopped at lights shocker:

At a ped light with nobody crossing:

Out of six, only one wholesale breaking the lights and another technically breaking it and just thinking about going further:

All of five just getting off the ground after the lights just turned green:

Sorry guys, it was me. Despite me being out of Dublin for the last four weeks, i'm definitely the only cyclist who stops at reds in the city centre. And yes, it is because i'm lazy and want to breathe.

+1 could have been me too, I imagine it could have been a lot of the regulars here.

I think we should all just take the compliment. I've had drivers ask me why I've bothered stopping, but never had one thank me for it or compliment me, so I'll take it :)

[Eric] Douglas entered British comedy folklore when during a stand-up performance at The Comedy Store, London he found that much to his annoyance he was losing his audience's attention. This led to him shouting out 'do you know who I am? I'm Kirk Douglas' son' to which a member of the audience stood up and shouted 'no, I'm Kirk Douglas' son.' This ended up with the majority of the audience standing up and repeating the line

I know the exact spot in my head so might try and get it on Google street view, Coming away from town off the north circular road towards the Cabra road on the N3. He leaned against something to keep his balance and look directly up at the traffic light on his side, he had tonnes of light up stuff on him, including a led arm band of some sort on his right arm. The time was about 7:30 - 7:50pm on the 7/1/12.

Here's a pic of the exact spot I think.... it was dark... If this is the spot, the right hand side of the road just ahead of the blue taxi is where he was

Weird, a taxi driver rolled down the window to me this morning at a red light to compliment me on indicating when overtaking a vehicle (a bus) and for stopping at a red light. I replied with a surprised "cheers".

Something does wreck my head more, I hate when you are stopped at lights and some cycles past you, then pulls infront of you. When the lights go green they pull off, cycling at at about 2k/gt and you have to try get past them again. It fooking wrecks my head

+20 if they're someone you've overtaken multiple times.

This happens to me literally all the ****ing time! It drives me bananas, i've no idea why it keeps happening. I think I have to ask the next person who does it just why..

This happened to me again on my ride home tonight! Down Rathmines road, an old man was cycling quite slowly with a very long coat billowing around, so visibility was low. Plus the roads were by now full of taxis, so overtaking wasn't so simple. Got past him safely after a little time. Literally at the next red light, he just cycles around and parks up in front of me. AHHHH! :pac:

On Grace Park Road going up the hill at rush hour, there's very little room to overtake, but this one guy managed to do it every time I stopped for a red. He'd pootle up the hill, I'd eventually manage to overtake him, whereupon he'd cross the stop line and place himself ahead of me again at the next light. I then asked him if he'd mind not going ahead of me at the next light, since he wasn't actually in a hurry, which I was. So at the next light he cruised past me, broke the red light, turned into an estate and shouted back at me: "I won, I won!"

I don't know what the moral of the story is here.

Move right a bit into the road to pre-position yourself for a rapid overtake before the fecker has moved half an inch from the starting block. If you stop more than a few inches out from the kerb in the firat place they'll probably pass you on the inside anyway, and you can shake your head wearily to prime the subconscious of the motorist behind you on what to expect.

    bikesnobnyc has 'shoaler'.
On the other hand, during the week other riders do engage in behavior that is an affront to their fellow humans, and one such behavior is "shoaling." As I've explained before, no rider, no matter how slow or diminutive, will ever come to a stop behind another rider at a red light. Instead, it is standard practice to pass that rider and stop in front of him, even if this involves doing so in the middle of the crosswalk or in the actual intersection, well ahead of the traffic signal. "Shoaling" is an incredibly rude practice, and it's tantamount to cutting in front of someone at an ATM, supermarket checkout, or urinal line. Yet while people will speak up if someone cuts ahead of them in line, nobody ever speaks out against the equally offensive practice of shoaling. Even I have never had the temerity to address a shoaler, even though I was flagrantly shoaled just this morning [...]

Why should I give a toss? Going down the Rathmines road full of taxis and buses at night when you can barely see around the 'shoaler', its not a simple matter to pass them safely. There's no reason for them to stop in front of me, its just an extra manouvre at a bad
