Liverpool star Downing arrested after allegedly punching ex-girlfriend after nightclub row

Liverpool face fresh turmoil after midfielder Stewart Downing was arrested on suspicion of assault after allegedly hitting an ex-girlfriend in a nightclub row.
The England international, 27, was arrested after a late night fracas at a club in the upmarket suburb of Yarm, near Middlesborough, at about 1am on Sunday morning.
It is the latest incident to rock the Anfield club, coming hot on the heels of the arrest of a 20-year-old man for allegedly racially abusing Oldham defender Tom Adeyemi on Friday night.

Trouble: Stewart Downing (right) was arrested near Middlesbrough

The club also remain embroiled in a second race row with Luis Suarez serving an eight-match ban for abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
It is claimed that Downing assaulted his ex-partner, with whom he is thought to have a child, after rowing with her while drinking at the Cross Keys club on Yarm High Street.
A local source told the Mail Online that there had been an incident between the two of them.
'She went over to one of his friends and said something that she shouldn't have,' the source said.

In the beginning: Midfielder Downing began his career at Middlesbrough
'He butted in and they were arguing.' It's then that the source alleged that he hit her.
The source continued: 'Police got there as they were thrown out. He caused a scene outside the club as well, when he realised they were going to take him in.'
Downing, who comes from nearby Middlesborough, is thought to have been back in town visiting old friends.
After coming up through the Middlesborough academy, he made almost 200 appearances for the club before joining Aston Villa.

Target: Downing scored his first goal for Liverpool against Oldham
He made an £18 million move to Liverpool last summer but has struggled to make his mark at Anfield but did score his first goal for the club in Friday's 5-1 FA Cup win over Oldham.
Referring to last night's incident, a police spokesman said: 'Police were called to an incident at a pub on Yarm High Street.
'A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 32-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assault.
'Both are in custody and inquiries are ongoing.'

Wonder if the 32 year old woman was the girlfriend, if so its probably much a do about nothing..

In all fairness the Mail's record, especially of late, of printing totally fabricated stories is reason enough to view anything they put out with scepticism.

The Guardian on the other hand are generally a much more reputable source by comparison.

Can we just get a general Liverpool player involved in controversy thread? Keep all the Carroll, Downing, Suarez, Gerrard, Johnson, Bellamy and Adam (I reckon he'll be next) legal ****e in there?

That's why I posted that! I don't believe a word the DM prints until it's in a more respected paper as well, tbh.

I think we should wait for the 2456 page report on the incident first before we make judgement, she might have deserved it.

The thing I have always liked about supporting Liverpool over the years is that they always have the good guys appeal and it is a rollercoaster of emotion following them.

I'm disappointed with the latest craic going on within the club.

Rumours are that the Liverpool team are going to walk out to this song in their next game in support of Downing.

    Downing will not face charges.

LIVERPOOL FC and England star Stewart Downing is not being charged by police after his arrest last month on suspicion of assault.

The 27-year-old winger was held for questioning following an alleged incident at the Cross Keys pub in Yarm, Teesside, at around 1am on January 8.

A 32-year-old woman also arrested at the time on suspicion of assault remains on police bail.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “A 27-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of assault following an alleged incident at a pub on Yarm High Street has been released without charge.

“A 32-year-old woman who was also arrested on suspicion of assault remains on bail pending further inquiries.

    “Inquiries are ongoing.”

Downing played for his hometown club Middlesbrough before moving to Aston Villa and then Liverpool. He was believed to be visiting friends and family who remained on Teesside at the time of the incident.

    Time to close the thread.

Slow down there. There was plenty of time given when the initial report was made for people to sling mud and treat him as if he were guilty as sin of beating his girlfriend.

Let's not lock up the thread the moment his in innocence is confirmed.

I'm sure there was a longer earlier thread than this that was a shitheap.

Mark Bright feeling sorry for John Terry on the BBC earlier, after what he said about Suarez, some serious hypocrits around. Full whammy.

Turned out Downing was actually trying to stop a fight between two 'wimmin' and the cops scooped them all up. No surprise there, seen it a 100 times.
