Handicap Ambition 2012

Following on from last year's thread - what are your goals for the year ahead?

A lot of pratice can be put in over the next 2-3 months which hopefully will help when the season actually starts. That's why personally, I like to have a target to aim towards; to motivate / justify time at the range.

I'm currently 11.8 - but my aim is to hit 9 by the end of the year.

(Obviously I'd like to go as low as possible but if I can reach and hold single figures by the end of the season - I will be happy!)

Don't remember posting on this last year but I hope to get to 9 this year from 12 atm. Went from 17 to 12 last year so hopefully more of the same.

Pretty impressive. You must have been shooting some pretty good numbers to go from 12 to 8.9 so if you can carry some of that into next year, should be no bother to ya to get to 7/8.

Currently 13.8, ambitious goal is to get to 8

Cheers yea shot a nice few rounds in the 70s best was 76.. ..got a few lessons to improve my driving and short game which helped alot ..got to 10 pretty quick but losing that next shot was tough ,was getting to 9.5 then back out to 9..9 then back in to 9.5 .all I thought about was getting to 9 ..eventually stopped thinking bout it then the scores started improving again

I'm hoping to just stay at my current handicap tbh :o

Same as that for me. Can't even muster a tiny amount of ambition re: golf and hanging on to Cat 1 would be just fine (currently 5.0).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

Got down to 6 from 11 last year. If I can play to it consistently this year I'd be very happy tbh.

Yeah, put in the work alright. Not sure I'll be able to put the same time in this year but wont be for want of trying.

Playing off 16 at the moment, hoping to get to Cat2 by the end of the year. Working my arse off at the moment and putting an awful lot of time in. Hope it pays off but either way I'm enjoying it..

    Playing to 12. Changing swing.

So will go up then down by summer end. Hope to end up near 9 or 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 468 ✭✭dines08

Off 14 and have a good GIR %, really need to improve off the tee and practice on my short game. If I get the time I think 9-10 is achievable. Just got fitted for a driver and 5 wood and saw an instant improvement. Onwards and downwards

No handicap yet but the club I will join will give me 16 no matter how my card's look (well unless I shoot very low ) Will no doubt drift up to 18 but would hope to be able to play off 16 by end of the year. Intend on playing and practising a lot this year.

Off 8 (7.6 exact) target is 6 or better, all I got to do now is sort out my chipping.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Currently off 15.3, aim to get down to Cat 2 and I'll be happy. Don't get to play & practice enough to get too much more than that unfortunately. Started last year at 19, and had best round of gross 80 (par 72) so think I have it in me to get down to 12 or lower hopefully!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭chalkie 501

started last year at 4.5 and finished it at 3.1
the aim is to get to 2 at some stage of the year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,939 ✭✭✭Russman

Injury, surgeries and resulting loss of form have seen me drift from 3.0 out to 7.6 in the last few years :(
Happily, I'm healthy (and enthusiastic) again for this year, so hope to get back to 5 or lower this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,627 ✭✭✭Benicetomonty

Went from 1.4 to 3.0 last year, comfortably the worst year I've had handicap-fluctuaution wise in the last decade. So any reversal of that trend would be welcome. Really trying to practice more efficiently than what I have been doing and will be trying to adopt a better mental approach in 2012. Came off the course thoroughly miserable a few times last year and hoping to take bad shots/days a little more in my stride this time around. Easy to say, harder to do!

You were off 16 two years ago and are now 0.2? WOW - incredible shooting, nice work. Write a book and tell us all the secret!

Same goal as I had last year - starting at 2.5 and want to get to 0.4. Have made quite a few changes to overall game since last year (including club and clubs recently) so we'll see.

Guys I had an idea for a tournament a few months ago and it would fit in with this post.

Every golfer in Ireland that wants to take part can.
    "Irelands Most improved golfer event"

    1. Golfers register for 20 euro into an event Before the 1st Of March 2012
    2. The handicap that that golfer has on the first of march is their Start Handicap (example Michael moore, The Island Handicap 17)
    3. On the First of September 2012 the top 72 golfers with the most improved handicaps over that 6 months get to play in a Grand final event"

To be paid for by the 20euro reg fee and include prizes. If we got enough interested it would pay for a great day out for the top 72.

Isn't that what effectively the GUI/Independent Most Improved Golfer competition already is. Handicap reductions from 1st April to 5th September is usually the time frame with the top 10 handicap reductions in each category going through to the final in Carton House.

On the above example given I think you'd have to split the top 72 qualifiers by handicap category as the biggest handicap reductions will generally all come from category 4 and perhaps 3 since it's so much more difficult for a category 1 player to loose a full shot.

I'm 10.7 at the moment after dropping from 18 over the past 3 summers... my goal has always been single figures... so thats my aim 9.4! It won't be easy but if I can improve my driving and irons to same level as my chipping and putting I will be ok ;)

14.9 at the moment, hoping for single figures this year but been floating between 14/15 for years now.

    Hope this is my year!

At 9.5 at the moment, first time back to double figures in a good few years. Have had a very bad three years, rising from 7 to current 10.

I'll be happy to return to 9 and play some consistent golf to be honest!!

To enjoy it is priority no.1 though.

Getting back into the game and hoping to just enjoy myself this year. I will start off in my company social club and go with a handicap of around 12 and see how it goes over the year.

Would put myself down as a 8 handicap at a golf club.

Just wondering if people are mostly quoting social club handicaps or GUI?

:D Glorified cheating this is! If u think u are an 8 surely u should inform the society that this would be the most apt handicap

Ha ha.. let me clarify. I played at 8 over five years ago. I would barely play to 12 now.

I went to the driving rang last week, and nearly died..
