If you're on twitter, what do you think, is there much point following footballers? Say like, following those who play for your club for the sake of it.

I mean, they're unlikely to say something interesting/controversial and if they do, it will be picked up from every source imaginable so you will read it anyway.

So if you're on twitter, following footballers - yes or no?

I only follow ex-footballers that had ties to my club (Darren Huckerby, Spencer Prior, Nicky Summerbee etc) because they've been there and done that but now have no formal ties to a club so can give honest opinions.

Pointless following current players because they only talk absolute rubbish and if, on the off chance, they do say something worthwhile someone will retweet it anyway within seconds.

Plus the likes of Rio, Wilshere and that come across as tools so have no interest in reading their nonsense.

Congo in my experience following footballers on twitter is sh1t. Some things it's just best to find out for yourself.

I dont understand the language they tweet in so stopped following.

I follow a few LoI players, because they act somewhat human on Twitter, but I don't bother with any big-name players.

If you want to continually hear about Nandos then following footballers is right down your street.

Ah no there is some good ones like Joey Barton, who while I by no means agree with most of the time and not everyone's cup of tea, go on some fairly entertaining rants.

True that they have to be careful with what they say but I enjoy the insight into their life's that you wouldn't get with a post match interview.

The fake Lucas one was the best in my opinion. They had everything down to a t.

Emile Heskey has apparently set up an account. It'll be a few days before it's approved or not I suppose. Hopefully it's real. The man is a hero

Ken Early from newstalk is good. Most players are boring. I unfollowed Rooney, Barton and Robbie Savage. Rooney just had the odd "today was a great game", savage and barton just write too much rubbish and obviously love themselves.
The Big Sam is the best, complete pervo!

I agree, Ken Early is very good. I think the only way of knowing who to follow is too start following anyone who you think you might have an interest in. After a while some of them will start to annoy you and you'll unfollow them.

Some tweeters are notorious re-tweeters, who reads re-tweets anyway?

Yeah, that's what I do. You have to do a cull every so often.
For instance, John Hartson was good, but then it turned into a re-tweet service for people doing stuff for charity.

I only follow Irish footballers on Twitter.

DavidMeyler - Tried to rope Frazier Campbell into playing for Ireland :D
JMcC_23 - James McLean #irish, don't need to say anymore, hero!
Cillian Sheridan - comedy gold at times, i.e. "farting in bed and pulling the covers over my head. #guiltypleasure" - lots more where that came from
Paulmcgrath5 - nothing more needs to be said
Jayoshea23 - James O'Shea (of MK Dons), mostly crap, but a few nuggets :D

    Twitter is brilliant.

I follow a lot of LOI supporters/players/media and despite all the crap on it, I find it valuable at this time of the year for transfer giossip and rumours. A lot of the news breaks there as quick as you hear it by text or word of mouth.

Not really bothered about the social side of footballer pronouncements tbh.

Thierry Henry returns from the dead after Arsenal erect weird statue in his image. Fulham fans now worried.
I have a dream. It's May 13th. Spurs have won the league. Dad lifts the trophy aloft. His fellow prisoners cheer as one. I have a dream.
At the end of the day it's 2012 at the end of the day. My New Year wish is that Dad's transfer window don't have bars on it. :(
A very historic day for football, in fairness. Today marks 125 years since Yakubu made his league debut.

Jesus have a look at Adebayor's Twitter tonight. He's getting some serious abuse from fans but he just keeps on giving it back to them.

It's disgusting the abuse he's getting. Lads telling him he should have died in the incident in Africa, and that it was all his fault.

He seems to let it slide right over his head though thankfully.

Wouldn't be surprised. Unfortunately we live in a world where it's too easy to give abuse to people from behind a keyboard.

I think that the police can make arrests over racists comments on Twitter can't they?

I read somewhere that Richards had to close his twitter account due to racist abuse.

Yea it's true alright, http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11679/7516797/Richards-closes-Twitter-account. Pretty sad to think anyone would have to be subjected to such a level of abuse that they are forced to close their account.
Manchester City defender Micah Richards has taken the decision to close his Twitter account after being subjected to racial abuse, his agent has confirmed.

The 23-year-old was sent an abusive tweet in November 2011, leading Lincolnshire Police to open an investigation.

He considered closing his account at that time, but decided to stick with the social networking site.

Richards has, however, been forced to reconsider that stance after reporting further incidences of the problem.

Alex Levack, of the players' representatives Sidekick Management said: "Micah is upset about closing his account because he enjoyed the banter and engaging with fans.

"It was for this reason he did not close his account when he first considered doing so in November.

"However, he has continued to receive occasional abuse and has decided enough is enough."
