    Can't afford to tax/insure/fuel it?

Why buy it in the first place then?
I'm not saying there definitely is something wrong with it - but I would check it out very carefully just to be sure.

In theory 20mpg and over a grand/annum tax is fine for some folk, once people start actually paying for it quite often the reality is much harder on the pocket.

My Monday morning effort, whilst not typical Bangernomics, looks like a pretty decent buy.

The tax is worth over €300 alone. If you could knock around €2-300 off the asking price I think its a good buy.

You are getting what looks like a very well minded car with low miles and 23 months test.

It will surely pass another test in two years if it is looked after and would sell again for the guts of a grand.

Thinking of having a look at the SEAT. Any advice on good questions to ask for this particular car?

Also, generally do people bring money for private sales straight off or is it OK to have a look and get back to the seller? Car is being sold pretty close to where I live.

If there's a good change you will buy the car, you might as well bring the cash. Making clear you can do a deal there and then and pay cash (even showing the cash in some situations) works wonders during the final stages of negotiations :D

It's a decent spec with the leather and MFSW, but it's a bit baffling why the work was done to address the NCT fail but it wasn't put back through - but not that unusual I guess.

At 10 years, a timing belt + kit + water pump change is probably due as it's not mentioned in the ad.

Not that much of a sleeper with the badges still on the back...

i wouldn't be flashing any cash, i always have cash well hidden until i want to do a deal and the buyer never knows whether i have a penny with me or not.

Over priced by about a grand though.

I wouldn't mind doing the timing belt myself if it turns out to be a genuine 156 V6, not too many of them in the country.

As for the sleeper thing, of course it's a sleeper, pull alongside that in your 1.6TS and you wouldn't have a clue. You could always take off the badges..

Fair play to you if you're up to it. It's a pig of a job.

As much as I'd like it the insurance companies would probably cry! Timing belt on the TS engines cost's about €400. Not sure how much on the V6 but is a worthy investment to keep on the road, even if it make's the car an economic writeoff.

There's two banks of cylinders and no doubt one at least is a pain in the arse for access. Could be a 6 to 8 hour job for labour charges.

 Gonna have to rethink my strategy of getting a V6 so...:D

Still it's rare a V6 156 comes up so thought it was worth a mention.

Indeed. The cost to change the belt + kit on the Busso V6 is quite a bit more than the TS for this reason, but also because the kit itself is quite a bit more expensive.

Extra tensioners presumably?..... along with a much longer belt.

As far as I know, the V6 tensioner + belt is around €80 - €100 more expensive than the TS equivalent. In addition, the V6 water pump will cost around another €100 (depends on whether you opt for the metal or plastic version).

Probably lots of miles and quite rough around the edges but 8 months NCT is a plus, asking €450, Tipperary........

Little Fiat for small money, new clutch and good tyres, test 'till November in Cork, asking €450 too

Both ratty yokes but they could turn out to be very cheap motoring, the potential to lose cash is small :pac:

Loads of miles on this 323 in Longford, again they're asking €450 :pac: Looks fresh enough in fairness aside from the bare steelies....

You mean you haven't heard Alfa Romeo and Timing Belt mentioned in the same post on this thread yet?

Manual 520i in Galway with no leather and 168k miles, also looks less than perfect paintwise, very dull look to it but it's 2001 and tested until 2013....

You'd imagine if it got that far. Depends on how long the current owner has it.

2000 Auto 520i in Dublin, taxed for two months and tested 'till September, asking €1100 and 138k on the clock, pics are woeful enough but it looks decent.

Changing the plugs is fiddly rather than hard as I found out. Plenum has to come off. Lack of space... ;)

As for the belt, special tools galore! I got a quote for a belt kit (belt, tensioner and 2 rollers) £350 + vat! :(

I was able to do the plugs on the ZT without taking off the plenum, rear bank were quite fiddly though, had to sit on the engine
