Hi folks, I'm starting to look for a cheap but fun runabout for a few months, while I put my E30 into project mode. There are a few of CLKs about, any thoughts on them? Both of these have short NCTs but the second one was tested in October: http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2822056 and http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4208574

OK, scratch the first option. 2nd option for e1,400 was tested in October and has NCT for a few months. Knock a few quid off for 3 months tax and enjoy. Sorry if my suggestion is a little off topic but I suppose I'm looking for bangernomics with about 200bhp :) Are there any other options out there that I've missed?

Thanks for that. I can't believe this car is still for sale. I might have a look at it next week, actually. I prefer rear wheel drive but it is supposed to handle very well and would certainly be better in the snow than my E30. For long journeys, that is! :)

Price a window regulator first :)
Driver's seat is in rags too unfortunately.

Great, great, great engine in them though :)

    It's a bit on the pricey side for a 1.9 406 imho

Hmmm, in terms of true Bangernomics, ie reselling it for what it cost you, I hear you. But in terms of buying into 2 years hassle-free motoring, with a good cash deal off of the 1400 tag (which is what the seller states), I think its sound. I have a 200K HDI Xantia with new timing belts, cam pulley, everything done and I reckon a well-sorted car is a well-sorted car.

    I hear you though.

6 months test? My one was €350 with 4 months NCT back in April. Still going :)

This 406 is down the road from me and has been on sale for a long, long time. It had a years test when first advertised iirc, can't shift it

Sure for an extra 100 you could have this 2002 HDi

    NCT till June, 1500

    Full-15962150.jpeg

Or was that an excuse to post some 406's on page 406.... :pac:

ohhh god, the irony............and whats worse is the next page is 407!

  • Registered Users Posts: 420 ✭✭Green Diesel

Bangernomics is much more efficient at 40 posts per page, it's only on page 153 as a result... Not long before a barrage of Alfa's!

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,176 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Hmm, I only get 20 posts per page and it shows this as being page 305 to me...

Question I already think I know the answer to but will ask anyway in case my own prejudices are faulty: where would be the best spend of roughly €1,500 in the opinion of posters here? Reliability and cost of running being my highest concerns:

A 2004 Chevrolet Nubira 1.4 with 100k on the clock:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4224524

    or
A 2002 Toyota Avensis 1.6 with 100k on the clock with some truly shocking pics:
    Full-15923718.jpeg
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/4238522

Open to other options in similar class cars if I'm way off?

thats the way to go ;)

Chevrolet uses same engine - z14xep as opels have, if i am not mistaken. , a lot of troubles with them if some lack of service.

i am driving similar toyota , just '98 . A lot of manuals and repair information available in internet. easy service and no problems with parts. actually trouble free car. , just do properly checked in independent garage, those toyotas has some trouble with steering rack and gearbox, but by this mileage has to be sorted by previous owner. if any trouble, plenty spare parts.

+1, yeah, a pal of garage owner pal of mine rebuilt the engine in aveo, which packed up just down to the lack of servicing (which can't be condoned) however, if it was a totota engine that encountered the same poor servicing, it would'nt pack up so handy:pac:

I thought that might be the general consensus but wanted to make sure I wasn't discounting a decent car due to the typical Irish infatuation with anything Japanese / German.

only problem , it is unreal find that 1.4 engine, but toyota engines are all around plenty, wouldnt be problems to source, in case needed ;)

Window regulator is €600 from Volvo, apparently. There isn't a smilie icon to describe my reaction. I put a parts request for the regulator and a drivers seat onto partsfinder.ie to see what will come back.

So which Avensis is the one to buy? I know some of them have timing chains rather than belts which would be a plus, I've seen older posts state that the better fuel economy of the 1.8 outweighs the tax difference over the more common 1.6. Anything out of the ordinary to keep an eye out for?

I notice a lot of them for sale are approaching NCT's, something to look out for?

°I am driving 1.8 petrol, lean burn , .. non vvti which have enough poke (110 hp) to drive in city, and pretty economical, if everything in order.

EDIT: also forgot to mention , mine avensis has timing belt. all those vvti ar pretty powerfull allright, but need to decide, what for you need car, for reasonable economical and comfortable driving, or for speeding... also i think insurance companies not really like those 1.8 vvti .

Avensis with VVTi engines (1ZZ-FE or 3ZZ-FE) are chain driven. Older ones (engine codes 4A-FE and 7A-FE) are belt driven.

    Not sure about diesels though.

And yes, 1.8 would be better choice, IMO 1.6 is too weak for such a big (heavy) car. :)

Some of those avensis gave fierce trouble burning oil which is hard to diagnose because it gets burnt off in the cat. 1.6 avensis is grand and worth the tax saving I've driver both. Keep an eye out for a later Nubia and offer low money you might get into 07 for under 2 k.

I have an 05 with the 1.6 3ZZ-FE - likes a drop of oil alright, really have to keep an eye on it. Would also agree its too big a car for that engine, could do with a few more horsies.

actually 1.6 and 1.8 are very similar engines, oil burn may be on both engines. oil burn usually caused over worn stem seals or in worse case worn oil rings. all that caused over lack of service.
