The Surf photography/Art thread

Its come to my attention that theres a few posters on here pretty handy with the old camera, pretty sure there's at least one artist too so I thought it might be good to have a thread devoted to surfing related pictures and art.

The thread's not just for peoples own works of art either so if you come across a good pic or painting on a blog, MSW or Surfline or wherever feel free to stick it up here! Just be sure there's a copyright stamp on it or post a link to the source and that if its from someones own blog or site.

I'll get the ball rolling with this tilt shift of Teahupoo I found on Reddit by a chap called Tim Mckenna(more here):

    tim-mckenna-teahupoo-9.jpg

I don't really understand how a tilt-shift works but I've never seen that wave look so small yet so big

This is miniature faking really. If you see the blurred top and bottom here, these effectively trick you into thinking that this is a close up. It's known as the diorama illusion. It's more than likely taken from a tower somewhere to make the process really look like a miniature

Could be taken from a chopper too,

It's interesting though, everything look like parts of a really realistic model.

    And proof of idiocy :-(

Yes, the car was broken into, most of the windows smashed and interior did ont attract me at all. Shame, shame, shame.

apparently faking your death is a good strategy too.

There's a few weeks of work in these paintings. Factor in all your time and costs, and it's not a bad price for one of the top surf artists.
There' ain't that much money for the artists I themselves I can tell you that much usually a ratio of 1/4.

I had someone tell me that €400 was too much for one of my paintings that was hanging in a gallery once. I had to break it down and explain that once the gallery commission is taken off (40 to 50%) and once the tax man got his share and the cost of canvas, framing and paint and brushes wear&tear is accounted for I'm left with about 90 to 100 ... and I won't even factor in the time spent painting.

^^Saw that earlier. Riley's I presume? Such a critical wave, surely the heaviest in the country?

Anyone know what happenned next? There's no way he made it out of that is there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 289 ✭✭keryl

Look at the detail wall it's made at the bottom of the wave. Crazy stuff

If you look closely at the photo, you'll see no one is surfing in it, guy bailed befotre the photo was taken

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 148 ✭✭donalfo

No, he's still on it there, just zoomed in on the RAW image and he's behind the sail, you can what looks like his legs. half a second later he did get mangled by that wave, but he held on for as long as he could.
