Fish Oils

I see them being recommended on here quite a bit and just wondered what the benefits are

I know when I did WW before I stayed away from all oil-based supplements just because they were "pointed" and came out of your daily allowance

But I guess there are such things as good fats (as someone pointed out in my other thread) are they something I should be considering introducing to my diet?

I am currently following a diet plan (non-WW) I just wondered what impact they would have ie should I cut something else out if I include them?

Sorry I've just realised it's in the wrong forum and should be in Nutrition & Diet - mods feel free to move it

A single fish oil gel tablet has 10 calories in it.

Rather than list the benefits, google them, check out wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omega_3_fatty_acids#Potential_health_benefits

Fish oil/udos oil, is on my list of supplements to take for the rest of my life

(Well that and cell-tech, but that gives you hulk aids)

I find it really hard to understand all the lingo that surrounds fish oils and to actually make a decision as to what is worth taking and what isn't. I also find it hard to understand what the dose should be. I just get bamboozled with all the options i.e. Eskimo oil, cod liver oil, omega 3 supplements .. random 'fish' oil etc. From what I understand and from reading threads here, there is a lot of crap out there which is not worth taking.

Can anyone recommend a decently priced Omega 3 oil with which comes from a sustainable source (capsules preferably :))?

    Mucho thanks

(sorry ImARebel, don't mean to hijack your thread!)

These capsules have a high concentration of omega 3 (which is what you want) which have been processed so that impurities are removed without damaging the oil. It's good value too.

I find it difficult to understand about fish oils but I've found transform has explained it well on his site, it might answer some questions

Good fish oils have higher amounts in mg of EPA & DHA.

The higher these numbers, generally, the better the fish oil.

I use the holland & Barrett ones & would usually have between 6-12 of them per day.

I tried the method Dan John outlined where you keep adding one capsule per day til you get the $h1t$ and then reduce by 3-4 capsules.

However, this brought me up to 26 capsules which is a bit mad. Couple that with the fact that all the extra fish oil tends to make you bleed a lot easier (fighters beware!!) & that I'd go through a tub of capsules in ~4 days, I decided to get between 6-12 in per day.

There are lots of types out there, omega 3's, omega 3-6-9's, capsules, liquid format.
It can be hard to know which one to pick.

I'd forget about the 3-6-9's simply because we can get enough 6 & 9 through our regular food, it's the 3's we need.

Then on to the capsule vs liquid issue:
Some people claim that by drinking the liquid, the brain makes a better connection with the fact that you are consuming the fish oil.
This has always sounded like a load of crap to me so as I said, I just shove 6-12 omega 3s down me per day & stick up whenever H&B have a 1/2 price or buy 1, get 1 for €0.01 sale.

What they don't tell you is, that fish oil contains traces of mercury from the polution in the sea

All fish contain traces of heavy metals, its unavoidable. Its why you should vary the type of fish you eat if you consume a fair amount of fish.

Did a bit of reading last night about the Carlsons lab stuff (thanks Typhoon) and since it doesn't taste fishy, ill give that a go. It's preferable than having to down 5 or 6 (or more) capsules a day .. some ppl pointed out it can be used as a salad dressing too so happy days! Got it from iHerb along with some other bits and pieces .. hope I don't get done for customs.

You just reminded me that I really should take the ones I have sitting in the fridge! I will aim for 2 with each meal. Bottoms up.

I've ordered a few bottles now and never got charged customs

after reading the revenue website I dont think VAT is applicable
The Zero rate applies to the following substances, whether they are marketed as food supplements or not, provided they are formulated to make good the potential shortfall from the nutrition required for a normal, healthy diet:

    Vitamins and minerals in solid form, such as capsules, tablets, pills or lozenges, intended for oral consumption without further preparation;

    Vitamins and minerals in liquid form intended for oral consumption without further preparation, but not including beverages such as high vitamin drinks;

    Fish oils for oral consumption.

    from here

That's mental...was he selling you the fish oils?
what benefits could you possibly have hoped for?
even with 6-12 per day...what benefits are you looking for/seeing?

    all serious questions btw:)

Not true it depends on the type of fish and what they are feeding on

No, the only thing Dan John sells is his time & his books.
He's a really really good coach.

It says take 3 capsules on the tub.
That's generally for the average person. Say a 75kg male.
The story changes when you're a 100kg guy & training frequently with moderately heavy weights & even more do at the higher levels.

Fish oils contain essential fatty acids that become even more essential to athletes. (not that I considers self an athlete as such)

    The benefits I'm looking for?
Increased hormone production, joint nobility. Flexibility etc.

And yeah, i agree the 26 a day was mad but you have to experiment with these things for yourself

Just on the concentration aspect or high strength.

The lower concentration may work out cheaper.

I've seen a 90% - you can get 96.5 epa or dha but this is mainly for research.

But the 90% will have per 1000mg:

    Minimum 500mg EPA
    Minimum 300mg DHA
    Minimum 900mg Total Omega 3

It is extremely clean and pure both odour and taste but it is not cheap!:)

Most of the worlds omega is produced in Peru.

    Great thing fish oils.

Ah i know him alright...but even if God told me to eat something til i get the sh*ts then cut it back a little bit i'd call bullsh*t!

Ok maybe so....but how much does the story change?100kg at what body fat %?

Fish oils contain essential fatty acids that become even more essential to athletes. (not that I considers self an athlete as such)

True again but how much essential fatty acid can the body use daily....be genuinely interested if ya have any articles or studies here

    Flexibility etc.

yeah i suppose you're right here...i'm just a bit of a skeptic and don't have the money to (over)experiment with a lot of supplements

I've been told numerous times by numerous people i respect a lot about the benefits of fish oil.

I tried it for myself & I feel better taking them than when I don't.
Now whether that's placebo or otherwise is a different story.

I don't have any articles off the top of my head but I'm sure a google search or a pub med search for a few abstracts will see you right.

In my own case, I'd say 100kg @ 16-18% bodyfat. & given my activity level coupled with that weight, I think 6-12 capsules per day, depending on whether it's a training/non-training day is about right for me.

I've been talking fish oil tablets for a long time now. Just omega 3 ones. I read somewhere that the absorption of tablets isn't as good as liquid... no idea if that's true. I tend to take 3 fish oil capsules with about three meals per day.... so usually about 9 a day.

Cant say I notice any difference talking them. Is it necessary to take them on days when I'm eating a large amount of fish ?? Some days I would get through 4 large tins of tuna (that would just be part of two small meals around lunch time). Would regularly eat salmon in the evenings too.

Ya it was late when I was writing that. Isnt it any saltwater fish will have traces of heavy metals due to pollutants and waste materials building up in the oceans??

That sounds very fishy to me.

If there's a shortage of Cod, where does all the Cod Liver oil come from. I cannot see the fishermen saving the livers when they gut the fish

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 986 ✭✭✭Typhoon.

Fishermen don't gut the fish .. processing plants do that... there's tons of fish landed from a trawler

    touche!

I'm assuming you have nothing more informative to add though as to whether it is a waste of time taking fish oils on a particular day when you've eaten a fair bit of fish ????
