So the 123.ie Insurance Ad on TV says you can get Fully Comprehensive Insurance for 250 Euro if you're a 38 year old woman, living in Dublin, with 6 years no claims, driving a 2004 1.2 Polo with 2 Penalty Points.

I'm living in Cork (Less risk), 7 years no claims (More experience), 33, driving a 2003 .7 Litre Smart. Car is additionally garaged, and immobilised. My quote was nearly double hers. How are they allowed to market a campaign like that when clearly no one's going to get a low rate as per the ad?

the 250 quote probably has a €1000 excess on it

    Youre a higher risk.

I should clarify, I knew I wasn't going to get 250 as a quote, but I didn't think it'd be so different given that I exceeded most of the criteria, and that I have no points, and she had 2. Surely she's the higher risk after being caught speeding.

I reckon 123.ie are not bad at all, €300 for me on the ZT, 31 years old, 3rd party f&t admittedly but the ZT is worth f all anyway.
Is yours a tad higher as you use it for more than social and domestic maybe?

:pac: I pay less than that on a 3.5L :pac:

wouldn't even give me 3rd party fire and theft for that. 1.1 2008 car, fully qualified driver, female, car kept in private driveway, 8 yrs no claims bonus, no penalty points.

Parts of cork are higher in risk than some of Dublin. Mallow is a flood risk etc...

I'd also fancy the chances of a claimant not missing their legs after an accident in a Polo over a Smart... No disrespect.

Some factors which probably influence this - (I'm not justifying it by the way!)

6 years in the maximum NCB you can have with them

She's older - probably a factor for their risk rating

She's driving a more common car - parts for repair are probably cheaper in the event of an accident

The smart could be loaded slightly due to relative numbers of claims? (years ago my quote was cheaper on an S2000 than a Civic VTi - which were all being robbed or crashed - or both, as opposed to the S2K which was virtually brand new at the time)

    She has no testicles

My renewal with 123.ie was 450 or so TPFT on the E46 M3 by way of comparison.

None taken. The Smart is a very robust little car. It has a 3 star safety rating from the originals tested in 2000 (Which is the same as a Freelander), but as the years progressed, there were significant improvements to the Tridion Safety Shell the car is built around to address issues raised in the NCAP test (Driver's knee being possibly injured in a frontal collision). They did mention that the cabin did not deform in the accident test.

    well you're younger.
Cork/Dublin are far to general of an area. Her quote is probably in the safest and statistically lowest likely place to get robbed.
The chances of major human injury to you if you were in a high speed crash in a smart is probably higher due to the size of the car.
and maybe you just live in an area thats has a bad history of car theft or damage.

See my above post on this. The Smart is about as low risk as you can insure. Engine's don't really get any smaller, values are low, and for it's size, the Safety systems are pretty good.
and maybe you just live in an area thats has a bad history of car theft or damage.

I don't. It's a low risk area, and has always been great for Insurance renewals.

Out of interest - what is your quote, with all your correct details - but for the 1.2 Polo ?

If you have the time on your hands, you really need to compare the differences one by one. You've changed nearly every variable that's considered, so it's pretty hard to tell which factor(s) are the reason for the higher quote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

I know a lot of posters here are quick to defend 123.ie, and point out that there's a world of difference between me, and the example customer - but is there really? I would have expected about 320-340 fully comp. I don't think that's unreasonable given the criteria specified for the 250 fully comp quote. I'm not actually whining that I can't have the 250, but I am disappointed that I'm not a million miles away from what they have specified, and in some cases I have more going for me from an Insurance perspective. Just seems odd.

Just for comparisson, aoninsure.ie (My current company) are nearly 100 euro cheaper than 123.ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Anyway, I'm done, point made and all that. Off to trawl the many many Insurance sites before the end of the month. Least Tax is only 50 quid for 3 months :)

Thanks to everyone who replied too btw!

I went with Creane & Creane via bestquote.ie. Their site can be very slow, but so far I've found their customer service excellent.

I'm with Arachas at the min and was blessed this year that I was with a company that didn't charge for temp subs or I would be well screwed. Renewal is due in March and when I rang them about switching insurance over to the new 1 series next week there was again no charge.

    Happy days:)

I'm a 38 year old female, and have a 2.0 Alfa GTV which is 00 so old, so I went on to the site to prove Owen right.

They came bang in at 250 for tfp, 257 for comprehensive lite, and 303 for comprehensive, half what I pay now.

I'm going to look into this more tbh and will report back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Or try getting a quote on a polo, I'd imagine it's cheaper to repair and less of a risk generally.

    Smart for2 isn't listed, only for4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,875 ✭✭✭✭MugMugs

What's ironic is that RSA the underwriters and owners of 123 generally come nowhere near what is quoted through 123.... I work in the industry and never understood that crap.

I added in the OH who is 48/male and has claimed on comprehensive twice the past three years, still got the basic 250 for tfp and comprehensive went up to 320, really need to compare it with my current policy though and will :)

Is that me or Owen? I'd agree on the alfa on repairs, but having seen a few tips in them that others have posted I'd not be so sure :)

    Absolutely bizarre one here.

This time last year I got a renewal quote with 123 for about €1200 (27, m, 2yrs full license, 3yrs no claims, 728i), I said frig that, went with NoNonsense for about €880.

That policy is up now (1 year on from details above) so just did an online quote with 123 a few mins ago, €545!

Motor insurance is a real headscratcher.

    still not bad though

They weren't bought out by anyone - Travelers have stopped issuing private motor policies in Ireland, they're still taking on other risks.

123.ie now issue policies through RSA.

They're not taking over their business though - Travelers just aren't renewing any private policies, so you need to renew with someone else. If you choose to stay with 123.ie you'll be offered a renewal through RSA.

Got my renewal quote recently from 123.ie - €450 including fully protected NCB. Not too bad for a RWD 3 litre TBH. Male 37. The admin fee for a temp transfer is €10 BTW, not €40.
