Vodafone broadband doesn't support Google Chrome????

    Hi all,

I've a Vodafone K5411 USB modem which frequently returns the following error when trying to connect to a website using Google Chrome "Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address."

(I also get a similar 116 Error from time to time)

This is really annoying so I called Vodafone only to be told they don't support Google Chrome and only support Internet Explorer. If I don't want to experience the error any more I should use Internet Explorer instead of Google Chrome. End of story. There is nothing more they can do for me.

    Can this really be true????

    Ben

The error doesn't relate to the browser, but yes, they can say they only support IE.

So, open IE, get the same error, call them and make them deal with the issue.

It's more likely a small config issue on the USB modem.

    Hi Ben,

I'm fairly certain that Vodafone broadband would support Chrome, does it work ok in Internet Explorer? I would start by changing your DNS settings in Windows to something like Googles 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 and see if that solves the problem, see here

I think if you change your DNS settings it will work.

    (must type faster!)

Thanks for the help YoYo, that seems to have done the trick.

I don't really see how they can say that without looking like goons. They provide internet access, not browser access. Sure you can't even get IE for MacOs (or Linux) for example.

They can also claim they don't support OSX (Mac) nor Linux. :D

As with most tech support guys they are goons that only have the slightest iota what they're on about. In future people would be better off ignoring them and asking for advice on here.

    YoYo,

Although I changed my DNS settings as suggested it seems Vodafone or the USB modem sets them back to their original settings on power on/off. I know I set them to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but after experiencing the same delayed DNS response errors from time to time today I checked the DNS settings again and they had reverted to the ones I deleted before setting the Google addresses.

Any ideas what I should do to prevent the Vodafone settings being reverted to all the time?

    Hi Ben,

I've no idea tbh, I didn't even think those dongles would do that automatically! I'd look in the Huwaii options to see if you can turn off the automatic setting.
The other option is ringing up or talking to Vodafone on the talk with forum and telling them to fix their DNS servers!

Those dongles should only be used as a last resort. If you require internet on the road you have no choice but if your using this more or less exclusively in your own home you should get a fixed line in and just use local Wifi.

I get fixed line from Vodafone 7mb with an added 150gb limit for €48. If Vodafone won't/can't fix the problem tell them to hook you up to a fixed line if you can.

You have identified the problem and it's a simple fix of changing the DNS settings so don't let them tell you anything otherwise. If they say there's nothing they can do about it then they can't provide you with the service you paid for and in my mind would be in breach of contract. Although most contracts basically state the company can tell you to go **** yourself.

Vodafone broadband works with Google Chrome, and other OS/Browser combinations.

What Vodafone are saying is that they won't help you out with them. They don't provide a support service which will help you get Chrome to work.

To be fair they can't be expected to have knowledge of every OS/Browser combo out there.

Use IE, get them to fix the problem, then go back to using Chrome.

They can say that. It's not great service, sure (especially for non-Windows clients), but no doubt the diagnostic flow-chart the support 'technicians' work off includes stuff like "click 'Tools', then 'Internet Options', then 'Connections'...." etc. etc.

They have to draw the line somewhere when it comes to browser support (Lynx anybody?). And if your connection works with Internet Explorer but not with Chrome, the problem (in 99.9999% of cases) is not on Vodafone's end.

Appreciate all the suggestions and comments guys.

I'm stuck with using a USB dongle for reasons beyond my control relating to an office lease, shared services etc etc :(

In trying to restore the original DNS settings (to see what effect that would have) I deleted 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 but inadvertently forgot to save the original settings so I'm now operating with no DNS server addresses set in Internet Protocol Version 4. It's obtaining the IP address automatically and obtaining the DNS server address automatically and in the tab "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" the list of DNS Server addresses is totally blank.

So far no more time out errors and Speedtest is returning a ping of 46ms, download speed of 6.95Mbps and upload of 1.27Mbps which is ton's for my work use.

Have I accidentally hit on a solution or is there a consequence lurking round the corner???

Well you don't need any settings in there it's commonly done automatically, at least it is with wired.

If it works, it works. :D

    Me again!!

OK, so removing all DNS server settings and setting obtaining both IP and DNS addresses to automatic yields a much improved performance for me using Google Chrome. I'm happy out.

The new problem I'm having is that everytime I restart my machine and use the USB Modem it seems to be resetting the DNS server addresses to the Vodafone defaults of 89.19.64.36 & 89.19.64.164 which result in DNS timeouts using Chrome so I now have to manually remove the Vodafone DNS server settings everytime I start to use the USB Modem.

Can anyone here advise a way of preventing the USB modem from changing the "Auto" settings I prefer to use?

Ive no clue tbh, my only guess is you may be able to change these settings in the vodafone hawaii control app to not set automatically, or maybe not...

Looks like not but thanks for the idea. Will take this discussion/issue over to the Vodafone forum where hopefully I'll get an answer.

    Cheers,
